LA
Albinos have no black coloration.
LA
Newly arrived albino axolotls. Note their external gills.
LA
They take in oxygen thru their external gills.
LA
Quite a variation in their sizes. Hungry large ones will often try
to eat littler ones.
LA
He's about two-inches long. We tried to remove ALL the gravel.
LA
We put the eight smaller axolotls in their own 10-gallon tank.
LA
We'll siphon out any excess food and get that gravel out to keep them
from ingesting it.
LA
This guy's top fin looks a bit chewed on.
LA
The four larger axolotls got their own 10-gallon tank (to protect the
little guys). Nice fat bellies.
LA
Gravel probably too large to swallow but very likely to hide their food.
LA
So we decided to add a food dish to make their food easier to locate.
LA
This four-inch flat food bowl helps them find their food.
LA
Here' a good view of their external gills.
LA
We added live blackworms and then put the axolotls in the bowl. At
first they just sat there.
LA
They quickly figured it out.
LA
When they emerged from their food bowl, you could see the worms in their
bellies.
LA
Not all albino axolotls are pink.
LA
Some young axolotls come to the surface as if breathing air.
LA
We may add more photos later. LA May 6, 2008.
LA
We put some small cichlid pellets in their food bowl and the cory clean
up crew found them fast.
LA
We couldn't shoot their eating per se because they jump. But you
can see their pellets here.
LA
And you can see the pellets thru the walls of his abdomen.
LA
So you know they're not starving. LA May 7, 2008.
LA
Since the big guys accepted the pellets so well, we fed the little guys
similarly.
LA
They ate them.
LA
Next day they got feeder goldfish.
LA
Which fills the belly very well.
Happy Meals. May 5, 2008.
