Introduction.
We pretty much covered how to care for these cute little rascals in
Fire-Belly Newts.
But that doesn't mean we can't say more and show more pictures.
Originally, it was intended to be a breeding sequence.
Unfortunately our facilities are too warm to get that urge to merge and
need to breed cranking. Some of the pictures are in logical
order or at least chronological order. Others are not.
They're taken over a period of years and several different groups of
red-belly newts kept under a variety of conditions. LA
LA
LA
Counting their tails, most red-belly newts hit the market under 3
inches in length.
LA
Red-belly newts are perfectly capable of floating at the surface.
LA
And they like to clamber atop any thing in their environment.
LA
Red-belly newts come to the surface to take it easy.
LA
Loafing on a lily.
LA
Unfortunately, the company that made these floating lilies has gone out
of business.
LA
Too bad, because the newts like them a lot. And the lilies
certainly add to the ambience.
LA
They spend much time clambering across the bottom -- probably looking
for snacks.
LA
If you clamber enough, you're likely to find a tasty treat -- an
inch-long piece of nightcrawler.
LA
Mm. Tasty.
LA
No way.
LA
Determined little snots., but still no way
LA
You'd think they'd go for the dwarf frogs, but they just ignore them.
LA
They like cichlid pellet foods but not the betta pellets.
LA
I was hoping to include a spawning report, but most of these guys/gals were
just fooling around.
LA
Here we see a cluster fooling around session.
LA
Dirty Harry said: "A man has to know his limitations."
LA
Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "A man's reach must exceed his grasp."
LA
So you voyeurs out there can just stay tuned.
LA
LA
LA
Obvious male. Most males are shy and hate this examination.
LA
In fact, they protest a lot (to no avail).
LA
Less wiggly likely female or immature male.
LA
?
LA
They must be mating. But there was no hard evidence of anyone's
success.
LA
Newts shed their skins as they grow.
LA
Greedy little guys that do not share willingly.
LA
We usually wind up snipping these nightcrawlers into 1/4-inch pieces.
LA
Always keep them covered.
LA
We must finally bid our red-belly newt friends aloha. LA
