Prologue:
Last millennium, some 10 or 15 years ago, marine toads used to be a
common toad in the pet market. Today, not so much. The "marine"
name comes from the earlier belief that they lived along the ocean's shores.
They don't, but they are very wide spread. In some areas (like
Australia) they take
over by eating the local toads and tasting so nasty that hardly any
predators will eat them. By the way, they are really known as cane
toads.
LA
Small (4-inch) cane toad. Not as common as they used to be a couple
decades ago.
LA
3-inch cane toad.
LA
Another 3 incher.
Toady Appearance:
When small, these guys look very much like other toads, but they
grow quite large. Since they grow so large, one cane toad will do
ya. The little guys are as cute as, well, as cute as a toad can
be. They don't all look alike and some get uglier as they grow.
LA
Pleasant enough face.
Fairly plain underbelly on this guy.
LA
More colorful belly on this one.
Special Lighting?
Since toads prefer the night shift, cane toads do not require
special UVB illumination. If you want to get extra calcium and
vitamin D3 into their system, dust their crickets. Not
every day, but weekly. Or you can gut load your
Crickets.
LA
Profile mug shot.
LA
Grows to 4 pounds. Opportunistic feeder -- even eats dog and cat food.
LA
Marine toads used to be common. These guys get big, really big.
Flexible Feeders:
Like every other toad., cane toads like insects and worms.
Most anurans insist on moving prey. Not the cane toad. In
some areas, feral cane toads come up on the back porch and eat the food
that was set out for the family dog or cat.
LA
We repeat -- opportunistic feeder.
LA
Provide a shallow water bowl.
Water Bowl:
Give your cane toad a low water bowl. Don't worry. He
can get out of any water bowl. These guys jump like a goat.
But if you give him a high rimmed water bowl, he may not know that's
where you hide his water.
LA
Cane toads show well over a white substrate.
LA
Different guy hunkered down in the gravel. He almost blends into
this mixed white gravel.
LA
Here's one down side of white sand.
Substrates:
Sand makes a lousy toad substrate. It sticks to your cane
toad everytime he exits his water dish. Gravel works better.
Some say toads will ingest gravel. They do -- with impunity.
Note : Impunity is not a condiment. Those "natural"
wood fibers are just as likely ingested. And your toad will burrow
into them like a mole. Even sitting atop the "naturals," your toad
will blend in and mostly disappear into the "woodwork."
LA
This can't be comfortable.
Another Sand
Diss:
Did you ever get sand in your shorts at the beach? Nuff said.
Go with gravel.
LA
As mentioned earlier, cane toads know how to jump.
Provide a Cover:
In the process of washing off this gritty sand, we put this guy in
our "scrub sink" with the drain securely sealed. We exited the
area to find a scoop to remove the sand. When we returned, he had
disappeared himself. We measured the sink at 11 inches. We
thought the sink was deep enough. Not so much. Invest in a
secure cover. Beware. He is on the loose in Des Moines.
Do NOT Lick:
Some toads emit toxins that will give you a buzz. Cane toads
give off toxins that will kill predators too dumb to leave them alone.
I believe Beavis and Butthead tried toad licking and lived to tell about
it. Some of the knuckleheads that have eaten toad parts have not
lived to talk about how nasty they taste.
Last Words:
Yes, cane toads "squirt" when you first pick them up. They
give up this defense mechanism usually about the fifth time you pick
them up. But if you're a toad fan, you just have to admire these
tough little critters. Yes, they're considered large (for a toad),
but they're still smaller than a bread basket. LA
