LA
Siberian chipmunk in traditional chipmunk pose.
LA
Iowa chipmunk trapped in my back yard. Cuter but meaner.
Good Pets: Siberian chipmunks are not the chipmunks that live
in my backyard. Two years ago I trapped 97 of the locals that were
using my garage as Grand Central Station. They also ran so many
burrows under my cherry tree that it expired. They ran up all my
sweet corn stalks, husked and ate it just as it came in season. I
tried trapping them planning on the second and third generations taming
down. The first generation jumped two feet every time I approached
them. Unfortunately, the neighborhood kids liked to look at them
(close). When they lifted the lid, the striped varmints shot out
like rockets. So maybe some of the trappees were really re-trappees.
LA
Tame little rascals.
On the Other Hand: Siberian chipmunks are quite tame -- tamer
than mice, hamsters, and gerbils -- about as tame as a hooded rat.
Much smaller than a rat and certainly employing a better skilled
publicity agent, everyone likes chipmunks. Even Paul here at
Aqualand has all their albums and can sing most of their songs --
especially the one about wanting a hula-hoop.
La
Even when grabbed they do not panic.
LA
But to get a real close up, we have to corral him.
LA
As long as he's out, he might as well explore.
Climbers: Siberian chipmunks live and nest on the ground, but
they climb like squirrels. So give them plenty of exercise outside
their cage. And they'll use a hamster wheel inside their cage.
They're not as nosy as ferrets, but they do like to check out their
environment. Hamsters are nocturnal, Siberian chipmunks are
diurnal.
LA
Looks like a good place to build a nest.
LA
You can make a temporary leash until he or she bonds to you.
LA
Acceptable chipmunk headquarters.
LA
Like most little mammals, they learn how a water bottle works very
quickly.
Living Quarters: Siberian chipmunks like lots of room,
something to climb on, a water bottle, and aspen substrate. You'll
want a secure cage closure and probably a hamster wheel. You also
need a hide box/nest for their security.
LA
Is this all there is?
LA
They accept these pet blocks but don't really eat them.
LA
They just chew these blocks to bits and strew the debris around.
LA
Siberian chipmunks enjoy an occasional super worm.
LA
And here we see the last chews or two on a newly shed Madagascar
cockroach.
LA
Introducing strawberry yogurt (with active cultures) for the very first
time.
LA
And they love it.
LA
And maybe some greens also.
LA
They tried yam slices but were not in love with them.
Foods: As long as you give them a mixture containing seeds
and pellets, Siberian chipmunks do fine. No particular need for
supplements. In the wild, they'll also eat insects, eggs, and
mushrooms. They also accept an
occasional dab of yogurt and maybe tiny bits of fruit and boiled eggs.
They like to try new foods.
LA
This guy's meeting a grape for the first time.
LA
How the heck does this thing work?
LA
They do use exercise wheels. They run their wheels like crazy.
Wheels: Siberian chipmunks take a minute or two to figure how
to work an exercise wheel -- much quicker than your average gym member
takes to discover how to use a treadmill. Metal ones last longer
than plastic wheels.
LA
Can I come out and play now?
LA
Reminds him of a FEMA trailer.
Nest: Chipmunks in my backyard dig yards and yards of
tunnels. They will need a hidey hole in their cage. You can
find many choices on the market or make your own. Wood lasts
longer. They'd probably accept a one pound coffee can, but what
will their neighbors think?
LA
No one can resist a cute little chipmunk.
LA
Tasting a ballpoint pen.
LA
Portable but not very tasty.
LA
No chipmunk cheeks here.
LA
Might be some food in here somewhere.
LA
Found it!
LA
Shredded aspen tastes a little woody.
LA
Gotta be more food somewhere.
LA
Temporarily distracted by the water bottle.
LA
Whoa. What's this?
LA
Looks like a good spot to set up camp.
LA
Extra food goes into those cheek pouches.
LA
Cheeky little devils.
LA
Still, it's nice to be out and about.
LA
He's ready to "bust a move" and take a flying leap.
LA
Everyone loves the little rascals. This guy still made a run for
it.
LA
Recaptured and back at home safe and sound.
