Hi, I'm hoping you can tell me what this is (yes, it's a Festivum, I mean the black spots on body and fins). They don't appear raised like Ich.
This tank housed 2 Curviceps for about six months and they always had the spots but not this bad. They seemed healthy otherwise so I thought maybe it was something normal or genetic with those fish.
The day I got the Festivum, I moved the Curvis to another tank and the spots disappeared within 2 weeks, but started showing up on the Festivum (who is in the tank they had just been removed from, in case you are having trouble following this). The spots are now worse than they ever were on the curviceps and multiplying fairly quickly and I'm starting to get worried. Any help you can give will be appreciated, I have never seen this before.
Btw, he is in a 20 gal, alone but for trumpet snails, plants and several types of algae. There was a Flying Fox in there a while back with the curvis and he never got the spots but died of bloat. Thanks

DG

A:  Well, I've never seen this before either.  He doesn't look "sick."  If he is sick, you need to decide if it's from a virus, bacteria, or parasite.  If it's a virus, not much you can do other than thin the herd.  If it's bacteria, use a wide-spectrum antibiotic.  If it's a parasite, give him a brief saltwater or potassium permanganate bath -- long enough to zap the parasite but short enough to keep your festivum alive.  Your other choice is just to quarantine him and look for any changes.  It could get worse.  It could get better.  It could stay the same.  As mentioned earlier, he doesn't look sick.  No frayed or droopy fins.  No cloudy eyes.  I'd opt for isolation.  LA

Hi, I was wondering if you sold chinchillas?

A:  Yes.  LA

Dave Kelly, UK, January 22, 2010
Hi, I live in the UK and was boning up on the best care for my new Emperor Scorps when I came across your excellent site -- Nice One!!
Just a couple of quick thoughts on Giant Millipedes, especially with kids in the house. Lovely things to hold (the millipedes, I hasten to add...) but a strict handwashing regime must be implemented as the malodorous juice that's exuded can be toxic if ingested. I don't know the level of toxicity but better safe 'n' all that. Don't need any court cases pending!!!
The other thing is regarding breeding -- Yes they can be bred if not over crowded. Also is of benefit to have one of each sex.... ;)
Cheers for a great site.

A:  We always say "wash your hands after handling reptiles."  We probably should also say "wash your hands after handling anything squirmy that pukes on you."  Pet store crews also wash their hands before using the rest room.  BTW, thanks for the sex tip.  LA
PS
We haven't been able to get the black millipedes for years.

Dave Kelly, UK, January 22, 2010
Hi (again)..... Just a quick note regarding Black Lights and scorps.
While it's generally true that these don't cause any harm to scorps, this is very much not the case with Emperors. Maybe it's due to their habitat, but these guys are ultra-sensitive to the entire UV spectrum. While black lights, unlike reptile lights, won't kill them, it will put undue stress on the animal. Long term exposure, such as using a black light to illuminate at night, can lead to an untimely death. (While I can't list the sites I visited, I did several months research before committing to my new-found friends and this seems to be the most common information found.)
In my opinion any pet owner who doesn't mind putting stress on an animal really shouldn't have them. Cheers,

A:  I added your info to my scorpion page.  LA

Malcolm Martin, UK, January 22, 2010
Hi I took a look at your Care Sheet on Calotes versicolor and I was wondering if you would happen to know anyone in the UK who sell this breed of lizard. Thank you very much

MM

A:  I'm sorry.  I'm unfamiliar with any lizard mongers in the UK.  LA

Hey there again, I have a Pictus in a 55 gallon community tank with tiger barbs, rosy barbs, angels and a few other assorted fish. He (I'm assuming he) usually stays in a large driftwood decoration most of the time but ventures out when I turn off the lights. A few minutes ago while turning off the lights for the night, I noticed a rotting fish in the bottom of the tank and it had a huge chunk eaten out of it. This is puzzling for a few reasons, first of all being that that fish wasn't there earlier in the day (I regularly check for dead specimens). Also the chunk eaten indicates that it was the Pictus. I know that a Pictus will chow on a smaller fish without any hesitation (I lost a Danio that way), but are they known to attack a larger fish? Or are they known scavengers? Could that fish have died from a different cause and the Pictus saw it as a free meal? I'd like to know cause that Pictus is my favorite of all my fish and I don't wanna remove him from that tank, since the only alternative is to put him with the 3 inch Oscar and I doubt the Pictus will win that argument.

A:  Nearly all catfish of any type will nibble on a deceased tank mate.  Usually pistus ignore other fish that are at least half their size.  LA

Gage Coleman, Gahanna, OH, 16 years old, January 23, 2010
Hey dude I just wanted to tell you the difference between a red devil and a midas and it's quite simple. A midas is thicker and is in most cases a darker red then a red devil. That's just about it. Stay awsome! : )
P.S. love the website

A:  Thanks for the info young dude.  I'll try to remember it.  I'll add it to my red devil page.  I'm losing ground on the awesome, tho.  I'm down to every other day.  LA

Gage Coleman, Gahanna, January 23, 2010
Cool I have a question how long will it take for baby red belly piranhas to eat live food?

LA
Young red-belly, Serrasalmus nattereri -- a little over an inch long

A:  They'll eat live food from the day they become free swimming.  They grow faster and with fewer complications on cichlid pellets.  LA

Gage Coleman, Gahanna, January 24, 2010
Well, mine are about the size of that little guy and they won't eat these tiny rosie reds

A:  Feed them little cichlid pellets.  LA

Jessica Kelly, Greenwood, SC, January 23, 2010
Hi, my boyfriend Logan Newbanks suggested that i contact you for your advice. I have a 7 year old shih Tzu who has ulcers on both of her eyes. I cannot determine how they originated, but the first sign I noticed was her eyes becoming teary and a little bit crusty in the mornings. I used hot compresses to clean them. It got worse to where they were crusted all day. I took her to a local vet in Greenwood, who asked about 3 questions to determine that it was "allergies" and prescribed her 20mg of prednisone a day accompanied by I don't have the accurate name b/c I threw it away) ophthalmic ointment with steroids daily. I just followed along as he said until about a week later I noticed what looked like a small pin hole in her eye. I called another vet that I knew personally for her advice. She saw her the same day and stated the steroid eye cream irritated the eye even worse and stated then that she had an ulcer and gave me an ulcer solution (iodine and IV fluid mix, I'm not sure of the ratio) and atropine eye cream as well as vetropolycin to use in conjunction 3 times a day. I have been following this for over a week now with no improvement. The vet checked her eye this past Thursday and stated that she would like to increase the treatment to 5 times a day and continue for 2 weeks. She also stated if needed we would seek "other means of correcting it," which formerly being a med tech at the local shelter ...to me means "removal." My dog is miserable and I am just feeling so sorry for her and not sure where to turn to anymore. It seems like the vets I have trusted are letting me down b/c I don't have deep pockets. So, today I am treating her and find a small dent in her other eye which I'm sure is an ulcer. I know that animals adjust over time to things like being blind and losing a limb, but I don't want her to have to go through that if it's not necessary. I am contacting you and sharing this with you to ask if you can recommend any other form of treatment whether it be prescribed or holistic? I'm desperate for my dog's quality of life to improve and not degrade. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,

A:  Sorry, Sparkles.  Tell Logan I said thanks for the vote of confidence, but your question is way beyond my scope of expertise.  LA

Michelle Black, Australia, January 23, 2010
Hi there, Firstly let me just say your website is great, and really has provided me with a lot of information that I wish I had had when I first set up my tank and even a few days ago.
I was wondering if you would mind giving your opinion and advice to me about my current tank?
I have a 4 ft long tank that holds approx 105 gallons of water. Up to a week ago it had only the following fish in it, mature angel, what I think is a moonlight gourami, another unidentified orange looking gourami...maybe (the last 2 came from a pet shop that I now know knows nothing about fish, they sold me the moonlight as a silver dollar!), 2 catfish, and a tiger looking bottom feeder. They all get along no problems.
I’ve recently added 9 platys, 1 silver dollar, 8 neons (well 10...2 gone MIA), 1 rummy nose, 2 swordtails, 1 bala shark, 3 fantails and 1 uncoloured goldfish, ah, and 3 snails.
Before I found your site I made an order to get more fish and now am a bit worried. I ordered another silver dollar,  bala shark, opaline gourami, I’ve also ordered 2 Black Kuhli Loaches, 2 Striped Kuhli Loaches and the one I’m now worried about is a 2 inch black ghost knife fish.
So, I was wondering is my tank over crowded? I do have fantastic filters and aerators and even a bubble curtain! Is the ghost knife going to cause problems?
I used to have more fish, my angel had a breeder partner. I was sad to see him go. It was thanks to our kind friends who gave us some convicts. I had no idea what kind of fish they were but they were pretty. They wiped out so many of my fish and bred like crazy!
So this time I want to know if I need a new tank!
Sorry to bother you, but you seem to be so knowledgeable when it comes to all things fishy! Thanks in advance!

A:  At first I debated about working convicts and your country's origins into my answer, but I'm passing on that particular train of thought upon advice from my lawyers.  It's nice to have a large tank to work with.  You should be fine.  Just keep your ghost well fed.  Your moonlights, bala sharks, and various goldfish will all grow large.  About a year from now, you'll want another (larger) aquarium.  LA

Michelle Black, Australia, January 23, 2010
Thank you very much for your answer, a BIG help! As for the convicts, well I'm South African so I'll join in with the jokes! Again thank you

A:  I've always found it non-productive to pick on any of the assorted Aussies and Afrikaners.  Glad I could help.  LA

Anita, January 24, 2010
I have a 55 gal with 14 red parrots -- all very healthy, some as big as your hand. I have 1 that has white looking spots 2 to be exact about as big as the end of my pinkie finger on its side. It looks like the scales just turned sort of white. He has been this way for a while. I have been watching it.  It seems fine, eats with all others, just as aggressive. It seems fine except for spots. Any thoughts? Thanks

A:  My initial reaction to possible disease in a group is to isolate the suspected disease carrier and observe him.  Since he sounds healthy enough in your tank, just keep an eye on him.  If he starts deteriorating, quarantine him.  LA

Pete Lee, Pennsylvania, January 24, 2010
Hi again, I was wondering if you ship Java moss because it is impossible to find? I live in PA?
Also, do you know anything about taking care of chickens, because I am going to get them in the spring?
Also another question: are bamboo palms safe for birds??

A1:  I'll send you some Java moss when it warms up.  It's 11O F in Des Moines this morning.  Probably the same in PA.  Send me your address when it's expected to stay at 40 or above for at least four days.
A2:  I used to keep the fighting bantams.  They will jump on your kids' heads and chase them all around the backyard.  They sleep in the trees and wake all the neighbors when the sun comes up.  Then they like to crow maybe on the hour.  Their tiny eggs are too cute to eat -- maybe three dozen to make an omellette.  I originally got them to eat any bugs in the garden.  Seems they liked the garden even better.
A3:  I don't know what bamboo palms are.  LA

Adam Glover, January 24, 2010
Do you have any lungfish in stock and what is their price?  Will a 75 gallon be sufficent for it or would an upgrade in the future be required?

A:  This is my day off, so I can't give you a definitive answer.  Yesterday we had one juvenile under four inches.  We've had him for at least three months because he insists on hiding.  He's under $35.  Call me at 283-0300 for the exact details (whether he's still there).  He's in a 10 right now.  You'd never see him in a 75.  LA

Hunter Richardson. January 24, 2010
Good evening L.A. I have a question: I recently bought 3 Male Guinea Pigs for my son for Christmas and now they've begun "asserting themselves" (Humping), and I was wondering why they did this? And what causes it?
Thanks,

A:  Hmm.  Usually males get along fairly well when kept without females in the herd.  But, there are always exceptions to any "usual" maxim.  And you could have a female in your trio.  You'll often get flying fur when that happens.  As for humping in general, it's their need to continue the species.  Sounds like it could make a good springboard into having "the talk" with your son.  LA

Hunter Richardson. January 26, 2010
Well, Thank you. I'm pretty sure we don't have any females in the trio (i.e. they all look the same) and now there's no "asserting of selves" but more like aggression! Do I need to separate them? Or what? Because I could live with the Humping, but I can't live with two picking on one. So I don't know if it'll stop or if I should separate them? Thanks,

A:  If they're going to start tearing out fur, you need to separate them.  LA

Jessica Tyarks, St. Louis, MO, January 25, 2010
Can you mix a clown loach with an oscar? I haven't done it yet cause I wanted to make sure. Also what is the growth rate of both the oscar and the clown loach? Will one outgrow the other really fast? I want to make sure that an oscar can't eat the loach!! Thanks,

LA
The larger the clown loach, the larger the knives.

A:  Oscars grow about ten times faster than a clown loach.  Your oscar will likely eat your clown loach unless your loach teaches him early on to respect the switchblades in front of his eyeballs.  Oscars love to eat any fish that will fit (or almost fit) into their mouths.  LA

Zander van Zweel, South Africa, January 25, 2010
Hi, My name is Zander, I am 15 and from South Africa. I love your fish pages and your quirks. I was reading a fish page the other day and I saw an elephant nose knife fish but I struggle to get any info on them anywhere? because people mistake the name for elephant nose fish... Can you please do a profile on them? Or is their care the same as a black ghost knife fish. Thanks

A:  I've never had enough elephant nose knife fish to figure out any specialized rules to follow.  Therefore, I'd have to go with what you already figured out on your own:  "their care the same as a black ghost knife fish."  Good job.  LA

Dorothy Martin, South Carolina, January 25, 2010
Attached is a photo of a red worm that I found in the substrate that I have in my aquarium.  When I pulled the plant up, the worm was curled around the roots.
It looked like it was about 4 inches long when it straightened out in the toilet.  It looked like it flattened itself out some when it started across this small plate in the photo.  Is this a blood worm?

DM

LA
Here's a chironomid midge (bloodworm) captured from the wilds of Iowa.

A:  Your worm looks like a regular earthworm.  Some of them will survive for weeks under water.  Bloodworms max out at around an inch.  LA

Dorothy Martin, South Carolina, January 25, 2010
The worm I found does not look like any earthworm I have ever seen.    It has been about  9 months to a year since I have put anything new in the aquarium.  I have corys, an angel, bristle nose, and neons.   The substrate is Aquariumplants.com substrate.  It is dry and very light.nothing like soil.

A:  Okay, then.  I don't know what it was.  LA

Ava, January 26, 2010
Hi, My name is Ava and I'm the blog moderator for TheReefTank.com, a web-site devoted to providing saltwater aquarists all they need to know about their hobby.  We are proud to host over 250,000 saltwater aquarists each month!

I am approaching you because a few of our members have been raving about your site as one of the leading fish resources on the Web and suggested we award you our "Recommended Reading" medal (see below) and list you on our site's "Recommended Readings" page. You display such a variety! We are quite impressed.
To put the "Recommended Reading" medal up on your site, all you need to do is copy and paste the link on this page.  A preview picture of the medal is found below.

Also, I'd like to suggest you fill in this form  so that we add your site to our "Recommended Readings" page.  And one nice thing is that your readers will be able to click on the "Vote for us" link that appears below your medal and this way bump your site up on our "Recommended Readings" page.

I think you should be proud of the work you've done... The fact that our members have suggested we award you this medal says a lot about your site.
Let me know what you think.  Thanks and please let me know if I can help in any way,

A:  Okay.  I visited your site and give you two (make it three) thumbs up for not using Arial narrow in white on top of black.  (You had one missing word in the first paragraph but who hasn't done that?)  I also like your constantly changing home page and the very wide variety of topics covered and the fact that you're not from Nigeria promising me cash beyond Obama's skill in spending.  I'm not sure how to follow all your instructions, but I'll cipher it out directly -- sometime today I hope.  LA
PS
Last month we had 401,502 (but who's counting?) visitors, so the links should bump us both up -- sort of a mixed blessing.  Some of them must have been my employees (sorry, I meant co-workers) because they were all clamoring about updating our Employee Pages.  I 'spect I'll have to do that sometime this month also.  Maybe I'll add a Factoid Table on each of them.

Please see attached 2nd floor plan and exterior elevations. The floor plans were revised per our meeting yesterday. Also, attached is the initial code letter we will review/submit with the city.
Our next deadline will be Feb. 17th when we submit the Part 2 State and Federal applications. We are attempting to get a meeting set up this week with Jack Porter at the Iowa SHPO to go over progress.
Please review and let Greg or myself know if there are any questions.
Thank you.

Leanne Atley, BC, Canada, January 26, 2010
Hello, I found your website recently, and it is fantastic! You have lots of thorough information on a tremendous variety of species.
Recently, I was restocking my 29-gallon tank (until now it only had a couple of guppies, a honey gourami, and a bristle-nosed catfish) and I purchased eight neons and four leopard danios, which have brightened and livened the tank up. While at the store, though, I saw a black ghost knife fish, but decided to find out more about it before purchasing it. I have always loved ghost knifes. Both my aunt and my ex-boyfriend own one, except for they have provided me with two very different stories. My aunt, who is usually quick to list fish off as being aggressive (she's had plenty of those in her tank-keeping career) claims that the ghost knife, along with being among the most beautiful of fish, is also among the most gentle, and has too small of a mouth to eat anything, besides. My ex, however, warned me that any small fish that I keep with it will be eaten overnight. I have heard similar contrasting stories on your website. I'm sure that if I wait a little bit, the leopards will be fine, as they are fairly large already (approx. 2 inches) and very quick. The gourami, too, should be fine. But I worry about my neons and two remaining guppies. Would it be alright to wait until they grow some more and then test out the peaceful-ghost knife theory, or would it be best to not bother with the ghost knife at all?
Thank you,

A:  I'm happy to report they are both right.  Knife fish vary in their personalities -- size makes a big difference, as does your feeding schedule.  I've got a four incher in a tank of neons, but I wouldn't recommend it.  One of my co-workers put it in there on my day off.  I was more concerned with the little cherry red shrimp in the tank when I found the knife hiding behind the sponge filter a week later.  The neons and the smaller shrimp were all unharmed (I think).  Just buy a small one.  LA
PS  Congratulations on trying to research your potential tank resident before just plunking down the cash.

Hi -- just found your site today, and the information is awesome. I've
seen a fish in our local pet stores called a WaterCow - I can't seem
to find much info on the internet. I thought perhaps it was the
WolfFish listed on your site, but they don't seem to look the same.
The ones here have upturned mouths and flat backs and don't move
around much except when it's feeding time.  Same fish, or? Thanks

LA
8-inch water cow.

LA
Same guy or gal.

A:  Water cows are large gobies.  Don't mix with community fish.  They're likely to eat any fish less than half their size.  LA

Victor-Alan Weeks, Atlanta, GA, January 26, 2010
Hello, I'm back for the new year. Do you know how to condition and breed rabbits? My friend is at interest of breeding rabbits. I am writing this email because he has no email address, but anyways... He has recently bought two (2) females and one (1) male. Is this the appropriate breeding ratio? Thank you for the information.

A:  To condition them, just feed and water them.  It gets a little more complicated because you need to separate the males and females when you're not breeding them.  LA

Jee Hoon Lee, January 26, 2010
Can you use some of my fish pictures on your web site?
One of the pics is my baby electric blue Angelfish. She (yes she) is Half Dollar size and the picture of her was when she first got home 3 days ago.
The other is my  Electric Blue Ram that died a year ago. They are not dyed.  Me and my mom bred them and the fry were blue. We think the Electric Blue Bolivian Ram is infertile though.

A:  Your electric blue ram certainly caught my eye.  Your angel not so much.  I couldn't see the difference between it and a regular angelfish.  The ram is definitely different.  I haven't had one yet but your picture inspires me to add some to my private collection.  Meanwhile, your ram is in our Q&A section.  Thanks.  LA.

Hello I'm looking for a blue/black or silver arowana or possibly both. Do you have any in stock or expecting some anytime soon? Also on your site you say the Jardini are your favorite and they from Asia. Jardini are from Australia not Asia. All arowanas from Asia are banned from here. Which is very very sad!!! They are here but risky and very hard to find.  A silver Asian and a silver jardini are quite different! All arowanas are awesome fish but none can be confused with the Asian dragons. Wanna order some koi from Canada for me? Lol.  Anyhow, please let me know bout the silvers and blues,. how many, size and $$   Also do you have any flowerhorns? Or maybe any of the datnioides.  I will send a pic, a very interesting pic of a hybrid arowana. It's a silver from South America and either a jardini or Asian.  I think the jardini but that's just my thoughts.  Thank you.

CB
The hybrid arowana.

A:  I have zero arowanas at present.  I probably mis-wrote on the jardinis.  Canadian koi, eh?  Are you obliquely referring to the way Asian dragons come into Canada and then get smuggled into the U.S.?  I do have flowerhorns and one gold datnioide almost too tiny to see.  By the way, congratulations on knowing how to spell datnioide.  LA

LA
1-inch gold tiger datnioide.

LA
8-inch flowerhorn.

Chris Bruner, January 27, 2010
Dat looks nice just lil smaller than I looking for. Afraid he would just be food. Are you or will you be getting any south American arowanas in? Blues/black. Or the silvers? Thank you sorry for being a pest.

A:  The blues are running between $600 and $800.  I was tempted to get one, but decided to get several hundred other fish instead.  I did order a Jardini.  He'll probably weigh in at about 2 inches.  No silvers available right now.  Still not cheap.  LA

Jessica Tyarks, St. Louis, MO, January 26. 2010
Hey Larry, I just got a baby tiger oscar and he is really pale and lying on his side and not eating. I have had him for 2 days now, and I'm trying to feed him bloodworms and brine shrimp. He has ich but I wasn't worried about that cause I figured that once he was warmed up and he got some ich treatment, he would perk up but I don't know what's wrong with him? I didn't give him too much ich treatment cause I read on your oscar page not to use that much. so do you have any ideas as to why he isn't looking too good? Thanks,

A:  Oscars usually lie on their sides their first day in a new tank.  Ich probably aggravates the situation.  Once he starts eating (hopefully by today -- Jan 28), he should recover quickly.  Bump him to 80 F if you haven't already.  LA
PS
Don't buy a fish that has ich next time.

Lisaann Darmody, January 27, 2010
Hi.  Was just reading your page on Striped Raphael Catfish to see how long they live.  I bought mine over 17 yrs ago and he is still going strong.

A:  Thanks for your input.  I'm adding it to my Raphael page.  LA

Lisaann Darmody, January 27, 2010
Cool.  Here are a couple of jpegs of Raphael, my striped Raphael cat.

LD

A:  Thanks.  LA

Good morning. What is the cost, plus shipping, of one of your bags of 100 water hyacinths? You can ship anytime as I can get them started in my green house. Thanks!

A:  We're a retailer here in the other Des Moines (the one in Iowa, not the one in Washington).  I know there are much closer plant wholesalers in your state, because I have purchased Hyacinths from your state before.  Shop local (as we say in Des Moines.)  LA

Jessica Tyarks, St. Louis, MO, January 27, 2010
Hey Larry, I have a banana plant and the bananas fell off and i was wondering if they would grow back? Thanks for your input.

LA

A:  Those lost "bananas" are the storage roots of that dwarf lily.  If you plant it in shallow water in full sun in May, they may grow back -- but not likely.  LA

Hunter Edwards, Overland Park, KS, January 27, 2010
I was wondering how many Oscars I will be able to fit in a 150 gallon aquarium? I will be getting that size soon. I will be getting 2 Emperor 400 filters. I will be getting the fish at 2 inches. I was thinking 4 with two small to medium plecos.
Your web site is my fave web site. I will be going to your store soon.

A:  If it were my tank, I'd add at least eight oscars.  I like a busy tank -- but that's just me.  LA
PS
I've been to Overland Park several times.  It's about time some of you KCers came up north.  Say Hi when you get here.

Hunter Edwards, Overland Park, KS, January 29, 2010
Thanks. Do you suggest certain types and how many?

A:  The types you wind up with depends totally on what's available in your area.  I know you have at least two really good fish stores in your area.  They may be able to order the colors you want.  Don't pick the ones I like (because I like them all).  Pick the ones you like.  LA

1:
I'm located in Springfield this month but have a good buddy works at Deere there in town so, I figured you might have some. How bout DOVII you have any youngsters? Or any jaguar cats?
2:  I have some red-breasted piranhas guarding eggs also n lots of pics of my breeder Oscars n rbp! How bout parrots do you have any? Or strictly fish? Guess I can look on your website. I do really like your website. It's 1 of my favorites! Monster fish keepers awesome too. I have a PR of Congo greys n blue fronted amazons.n have a good friend down here has bout any kind of parrots. That's why I'm asking bout birds. N again thanks for using my oscar pic! I'm honored.

CB

3:  Female on right w/ bite out of her top fin. Their jaw locking n fighting gets pretty nasty sometimes but never one sided. Lol all my pics are with this junk blackberry. Lol.  I don't even own a craptop I mean laptop. I have 6 rbps. 2 trio . I don't know if you know how to sex them or not when they get bout 6" the females have a lot deeper belly than the males. They've been laying eggs twice a month for last 2 months! Their 21/2-3 years also. Oscars have bred twice now 1st time I wasn't ready wasn't expected. Last time 1 month ago. I let them fan n guard them. They did hatch. Pleco got 100% of them within one weeks time! I have a couple grow tanks ready for both now! Sorry for boring you, lol.

CB
Here's one of the females top left took this yesterday. They're both bout to explode any minute!

CB
All 6 rbp n can see a few of the 25+ neons. Quite the tank mates huh! LOL

4:  Both trios have laid n hatched! Both females split their eggs 2 males a day or 2 apart. Wanna trade? I'd trade 1 trio for a blue n 2 silver arowanas. Retail prices you'd have 200-250$ max in the arowanas. All piranhas are give or take a few months- 3 years old just like my Oscars none are siblings I bought them all different times in different cities n states! ??? Just thought its cool both trios are circled up at same time 2' from each other. They do spawn same time also within a day or two apart.
5:  I read your oscar spawn after you say you used my pic I think I have a few keys that's made it easier for me there little tricks/triggers you have to pull. When making new pairs intro all same time neutral tank or separate in buckets for hour or so slowly raise temp 80-81 cover half tank. I think the biggest part is water changes in 55gal I'd change 2 buckets 1 day next 3 buckets next 4 buckets. All from tap the key is lowering your tank temp 2-4 degrees with your new water! Replicates rainy season new fresh cool water. If nothing in couple days say 4, pull em, put in buckets again 2 hours same Then bump temp up 1 degree. N when you thought they were fighting for turf or pecking order the 2 that fought together I'd bet $$$ that's your pair! Idk, just my thoughts.

A:  I pulled your 12 emails into a single batch to simplify the answers.  LA
1.
No doviis but we do have loiselleis.  No jaguar cats but we do have achara cats.
2.  In parrots we have an African grey, an Indian ringneck, and an umbrella cockatoo.  Plus lots of little hookbills.
4.  Piranhas are illegal in Des Moines or I'd have a lot of them.
5.  I'll add your oscar comments to our oscar spawning info.

Bobby Jo Andreasen, (maybe Iowa), January 29, 2010
Hello.  We have a couple small koi in a 10 gallon tank and a couple small goldfish in a 5 gallon. Is it possible to put these fish together into one larger tank, perhaps a 15-16 gallon?  We are somewhat worried the koi will go after the goldfish if we put them together. Also, do you sell fish tanks and stands/ Thanks very much for your help.

LA

A:  Many koi keepers recommend 50 to 100 gallons per koi.  That's because they grow two to three feet long.  They won't eat your goldfish unless the goldfish will fit easily into their mouths.  Koi actually prefer vegetation but will pretty much eat whatever they run across.  Koi really belong in outdoor ponds.  Goldfish are a mini-version of the koi.  Many will grow to a foot long but not in a five gallon tank.  Yes, we do sell tanks and stands.  LA

Siva Vasu, Mumbai, India, January 30, 2010
Hi, it is Siva again. I need advice for spawning my albino bronze corydoras. I have visited tons of sites and followed all the instructions but to no avail. I separated the males and females. I kept my three males in the breeding tank and fed them a variety of fish foods. (egg yolk, flake food, pellets, bloodworms and micro-pellets). I also fattened up my females. After a week, (with no water changes) I chose the fattest female and added her to the breeding tank. The breeding tank has a sponge filter, two sword plants, lots of snails and lots of Indian almond leaves. I slowly decreased the water level in the breeding tank after the first week. Another week later, the water was just above the sword plants. The next day, I refilled the water with cold aged water with my watering can to imitate the rainy season. However, there was little activity and they haven't spawned. I have left my filter on for now. Could you please give me some advice. Please reply quickly. Thank You!

LA

A:  Namaste, Siva.  Corys like to spawn in herds.  One or two females begin egg laying and this triggers the others to participate.  So, I would add more females and males and start your protocol all over again.  I'd do exactly what you did, but use more males and females.  LA
PS  Remove the snails.

BOB, Virginia, January 30, 2010
Hi Larry, We had our first snowstorm in 4 years & some places got 10 inches. I know you guys deal with this stuff every year in much higher amounts then us. I don't envy you, but it's a somewhat exciting event for people living here. I loved the stuff when I was a kid but I prefer warmer temps now!
Anyway, here are some pictures I took today.

BOB
One of the pictures anyway.
This will probably be all we will see for another 4 or 5 years. I can't wait to start my garden again. Have a good weekend!

LA
At least the sun is shining.

A:  Here's a pic I took on the way to work today, Jan 31.  We've had our snow since before Christmas.  We're supposed to get three more inches on Ground Hog Day.  Then it will be all clean again for about a day.  LA

Jessica Tyarks, St. Louis, MO, January 30, 2010
Hey Larry, I just gotta say that you are very smart and I enjoy your website. Also thank you very much for answering my questions. Keep up the good work!!

A:  Shucks, now I'm blushing.  LA

Sue Edwards, Kansas City, January 30, 2010
We have a question for you.  My son loves your website, by the way.
We have a Leopard gecko and she is pretty skinny.  Very lethargic looking.  At one time she was fat in the tail, but not right now.  We feed her crickets.  Are we feeding her the wrong stuff?  We have had her for about 2 months.
Thanks!

A:  Start by warming her to 80o F.  Then feed her some wax worms.  If your local pet store does not stock them, call your local bait store.  They stock them during the winter for ice fishing bait.  Plus, offer her some applesauce on a spoon.  Get more nutrition into her.  LA

I recently found your site while looking up a fish I can't seem to find info on.
It was sold to me as a giant paradise fish -- about 6-8 years ago..
It is about 6+ inches long, pretty hardy and kept in a 75 Gal tank with pimodella pictus, a pushy exotic pleco (gold net pattern, orange tipped tail and fins..), 3 x a red/yellow nosed "flying fox" type fish (see pic), a red-finned shark, and some others -- pictures attached (he hides a lot in the Java fern forest..
I would appreciate any info you could provide. (name, Latin name, etc)
It is very similar to the common paradise fish (we have kept these for years in vases.  Just lost a nice black paradise we had for about 6 years.. beauty with long orange tipped fins..) but bigger.  Brick red with turquoise tail and fin ends.. All the best,

MG

LA

A:  I've seen these guys sold as comb-tail paradise fish and comb-tail gouramis, Belontia signata.  Fruitbat on aquariumadvice .com says they are also known as Ceylon Combtail, Red Combtail, Combtail, Comb-tail Paradise Fish, Comb-tail Gourami, Red Comb-tail Gourami.  Mine all proved to be nasty tank mates that enjoyed killing other fish.  Sounds like you have a mellow fellow.  LA
