Hi, Do you sell the Indian almond leaves? If so how much and how much to ship it?

A:  Yes.  Call Mike @ 515 283-0300 after 2 pm Central Standard Time with quantity and destination details.  He's the one who will send it to you.  LA

Leke Dawodu, Lagos, Nigeria, March 1, 2010
Dear Sir, We would like to introduce Aqua Pamper. We specialize in wild caught tropical fish from Africa waters. We daily air freight consignments all over the world. We would be happy to send you our price list. Best Regards,

Note:  Lagos, Nigeria might not be the worst place to run a business from, but it has to be in the Ten Ten.  Shell Oil can maybe do it, but it has to be tough on new companies (If they really are companies.)  I get three dozen communiques from Nigeria every week.  I tried to check their website.  It said "Under Development."  Not a good sign.  Ah, the beauties of the internet.  LA

Dear Aqualand, I have a female green tiger barb that seems to be getting bigger and bigger. I am just wondering if it's because she is full of eggs? and if so will she die/explode if she doesn't release them?  I also have a male cherry barb that has all fins except his tail missing and a few scales,
Could the female have done this or it a different fish in the tank?
I have 10 tiger barbs of different colors, 4 Odessa barbs, 2 rainbows, 2
blue gouramis, a pleco, and a dwarf puffer.  I know puffers are notorious
nippers but I have never seen this little girl bother anyone.  Please
let me know what you think.

BS

A:  Well-fed female tiger barbs fill up with eggs periodically.  Since you have several others in your tank, you probably have at least one male who will "cure" her plumpness some morning.  She will definitely not explode.  I would suspect your tigers as the nippers on your cherry barb.  You should isolate him until he recovers.  LA

RE Tiger Botia concerns
I just found out from reading your page (as I do for upkeep on all my fish) that they are in fact a member of the loach family. But seemingly from every store that I've seen them in they are "the most dangerous fish ... ever" (imagine an epic voice with a great amount of echo saying that). Me and my wife have been looking into getting one for our tank (55 gal) which is pretty much fully concentrated with fish from your oddball section.
Here's our current residents:
1 Iridescent Shark (3 - 4 inches in size)
1 African Butterfly (2 inches in size)
1 Pearl Goby (3 inches in size, but very chubby)
1 Sleeper Goby (2 inches in size)
1 Dragon Goby (5 inches in size, maybe 6)
1 Plecostomus (7-8 inches in size huge girth)
1 Albino Paradise Fish  (2 inches in size)
1 Bichir, Polypterus senegalus (just a baby, 3 inches)
We have feeders, but never for very long. Our Pearl Goby, Iridescent Shark & African Butterfly all enjoy a hearty snack now and then.
The one fish that seems to be the bull's-eye for anyone in a pet shop is our Dragon Goby, saying that a tiger botia at 2 inches would kill it within mere days of being in the tank. But upon reading up on loaches, they don't seem to be aggressive towards larger fish (our Dragon Goby altho they are blind, is an awfully good hider, and yet very active). So, what would be your suggestion on Tiger Botias going into this tank? We test the water every 3 days to maintain perfect levels, and use Nutrafin Cycle upon each fish entry (even feeders) to keep things clean. We previously had a puffer, who when being added (apparently with awful water) caused a massive ammonia spike and killed our 5 bala sharks (the largest being nearly 8 inches in length, the other four between 4-7 inches) but as far as fish fighting goes, we have never had anyone in our tank kill or even attack another fish unless it was a feeder serving its purpose.
Suggestions? Also, we've spent a large amount of time trying to track down a freshwater lionfish. If we were to find it, would it cohabit well with our other fish? Thanks,

LA

A:  In a 55, a tiger botia should not be a problem.  On the other hand, a freshwater lionfish prefers to eat fish -- if they will fit in his mouth.  LA

Jodi Henke, Des Moines, IA, March 2, 2010
Hi -- My name is Jodi Henke, and I am the writer for a national radio program called "Living the Country Life".  It airs twice daily on 291 stations in 39 states from coast-to-coast.  The program is run by Meredith Corporation here in Des Moines and Learfield Communications in Missouri. Our targeted audience is people who live on acreages.
I would like to do a taped phone interview with you regarding a segment I'm working on called "Making a Snail Farm."  The questions I would ask include best ways for kids to keep them in such as what kind of containers, food, water, where to get snails and what kind to get, how long they live, etc.
The interview will take about 10 minutes.  I'll write a script and email it to you for approval.  When I get it back from you, Betsy Freese, host of the program will voice it.  The segment will run sometime during the week of April 19th.
After it airs, you'll be able to hear it on our website.  And of course, we'll include a link to your website.  If you haven't had a chance to listen to any of our radio programs yet, please visit www.livingthecountrylife.com and click on the "radio" tab.
Do you have some time to chat with me in the next day or two? Thanks,

A:  Sure.  Call me at Aqualand @ 283-0300.  I may have heard some of your broadcasts on the Stuart FM station.  LA

Hello, I have a question for you guys. I have 2 mature Koi Angel Fish that have decided they really like eachother. At first it was fun to try and raise the fry, trial and error on a few spawns. I don't have a live brine shrimp hatchery, I feed them with frozen baby brine shrimp. Anyway, I've gotten pretty good at keeping these things alive. I sold a few but I find myself in a bit of a pickle. I have about 80 fry right now with nowhere to put them. (I think it's 80, could be less or more. They don't stand still when I want to count them.) Could you guys use these fry? They are very viable and "normal". I've kept a few out of the other spawns and they are very beautiful fish. I'm trying to find a place for them and not having any real luck. I'm afraid they will just get too big here and outgrow my tanks.
Thanks for the time.

A:  By a strange coincidence we can use 80 angelfish.  Give us a call @ 283-0300 and ask for Larry.  LA

Hi Aqualand, I have some question about Giant Danios and Chinese Algae Eaters.
1. What's the sexual difference between Giant Danios and how do they breed?
2. How can you stop a Chinese Algae Eater from attacking fish without moving it to another tank?
3. Why did my Chinese Algae Eater(originally brown) turn golden. It also ate the stomach of its other companion.
4. Can I keep Cories with my Chinese Algae Eater? It ate its pectoral fins off.

LA
Keep your Chinese algae eaters well fed or they will eat fish.

A1:  Females plumper when they fill with eggs. They scatter their eggs in the morning.
A2:  Move the other fish.
A3:  The gold is just a color variant.  Golds usually cost a little more than the browns.
A4:  Chinese algae eaters often turn mean.  They mix well with African cichlids.  All others, not so much.  LA

Hey Larry, So I got a pictus catfish and he has ich like crazy. (Let's just say I had a bad experience with a heater.) Anywho, he has ich like crazy and I want to get rid of it.  Any ideas? Thanks,

A:
Raise his temp to 80F and use one of the standard ich remedies at 1/3 strength.  Pictus catfish are very susceptible to malachite green.  LA

Can you help me with a source for African giant millipedes?  I need a few for display. Thanks!

LA

A:  I haven't seen giant millipedes on any of the price lists I get.  As far as I can tell, they are no longer available.  LA

Kellie, March 4, 2010
I have a quick question. I have a set of jellybean cichlids that keep breeding which is fine. I have been dealing with this for years now 2-3. Every time after their eggs hatch, my other fish in the tank seem to get some time of fungus. The last time this had happened, it took a few of my fish. This time my pair just had a clutch of eggs that were starting to swim around, so I siphoned them out of the tank. I noticed there were some type of fish lice or something swimming with the babies. I would like to know what these are and what I can do to treat this without this hurting my fish. Thank you.

A1:  Jellybeans are 50% convict cichlids.  They are excellent parents and always beat the crap out of any tank mates that threaten their fry.  Put your hand in there next time to check this out.  You other fish are getting fungus because your jellybeans are beating them up.
A2:  Fish lice (Argulus) are probably 10 times bigger than your jellybean fry.  I don't know what your weird little "bugs" they are but there are dozens of little animacules that co-exist in most tanks.  They are eating the excess food you are feeding.  Reduce your food rations and they will starve to death.  No treatment needed.  Sounds like you need a gravel vacuum cleaner.  LA

Haris Ashraf Farid, Malaysia, March 5, 2010
Sup, Mr. Larry? To the matter at hand, I got a gold gourami. Initially I was a bit reserved about adding an oh-so-'delicate' fish in with nine tiger barbs, but the tauke's wife assured me they would get along just fine, as they were both equally evil. Assured by her assurances and being rather afraid of her (she's got her husband whipped), I bought one, went home, acclimatized it, then watched for signs of bullying.
The first night, the tiger barbs "investigated" him (yes, it's a male) and lightly nipped his tail. The next night, the gourami turned the tables scattering the barbs and chasing them away for the sake of it. His tail has fully healed now, and he is still chasing the barbs, though they are fast enough to outmaneuver him. In, fact, my gourami makes the barbs look like sissies (like the tauke and his wife). Any tips? Removing either one is not an option.

A:  Ah, Haris, you have presented a problem for which there is no solutuin, because it is a non-problem.  But thanks for the new Chinese word tauke roughly equivalent to the original Dutch bossLA

RE
our first visit to your store.
I was so impressed, we will be back for sure! We could spend hours browsing. I was reading an article about Raphael catfishes. I had one for 13 yrs and I got it in a tank that was established so I don't know how much older it was than 13 yrs, but that is how long I had it. I gave it away 3 yrs ago with my 20 gal long tank to a guy that was a fish lover like me. It wasn't long I saw him again, but he said my little talking catfish had died. We lived in same town, the transition wasn't that stressful I didn't think. I would enjoy getting another now I know where I can find one. My husband and I are looking for good used tanks, bigger than 55 gal if anyone comes into your store wanting to get rid of one. email us and let us know. Thank you!!! What a wonderful store you have!    Sincerely,

A:  I'm adding your report to our Raphael page.  We have several small striped Raphaels right now if you can find them.  They like to hide.  As I was leaving for lunch, Mike said he thought we have a used 80 coming in tomorrow.  Give us a call tomorrow afternoon.  We do have a LARGE used one by the front door.  I can't remember its size.  LA

Christopher Burke, March 6, 2010
Could you tell me what kind of parrot cichlid this is? PetsMart advertised them as Blood Parrots and the orange ones as Blood Red Parrots.

CB

A:  Parrot cichlids start out black or grey.  They turn yellow or orange or red over time -- sometimes a mixture plus white.  This is a youngster altho it looks good sized compared to the heater behind it.  I have no guess as to what color it will mature into.  LA
PS  The reds look much redder under special bulbs.

Christopher Burke, March 6, 2010
I have 2 other parrots the same size as the unknown one and they are both orange. I was thinking maybe it was a bubblegum/jelly bean parrot.

A:  Could be.  No way I could say one way or another.  LA

How come you don't ship? And how come you also don't  list or have a marine setup?

Hello. I was wondering what the cost of an Indian Ringneck Parakeet would be. Thank you

A:  As I was leaving for lunch, I noticed that we have one hand-fed lutino ringneck.  Unfortunately I forgot the price.  Call me or Dave at 283-0300 for the price.  LA

Alanah, Des Moines, IA, March 8, 2010
Sorry to bother again, but do you know if the lutino ringneck is a male or female? Thanks

LA

A:  I don't know.  Dave might.  He won't be back till after 3 on Wednesday.  LA

I have been looking for soak seed for my canarys and nestling food. I have not been able to find it anywere. Do you guys sell this or do you know where I can get it?

A:  Probably.  I can't remember off the top of my head.  Call me or Dave at 283-0300 and we'll tell you.  LA

Tammy Norkiewicz, Kentucky, March 7, 2010
I bought two dwarf frogs in December from Brookstone. They are in an eco-style tank 4w x 6h. One is 4x bigger than the other. I called the pet store and they said the bigger one wouldn't let the smaller one eat and to put a divider in there. True? Also, what is the best way to clean and/or add water? Thank you,

CB

A1:  Frogs and people that eat more do grow larger than those that eat less.  A divider should help -- unless the other frog is a standard clawed frog.  Regular clawed frogs grow much larger very fast.
A2:  To change the water on small containers, I just pour them out into the sink.  I put my hand over the effluent to keep gravel and critters from going down the drain.  I re-fill with aged water of the same temperature.  LA

Kevin Daniel, Austin, TX, March 7, 2010
I have been having the hardest time finding stores that will sale newts and salamanders here in Texas, especially around the Austin area.  I found a bait shop that sells mudpuppies, and have 2 in an aquarium (one has had its gills recede and turn into a tiger salamander, while the other has kept its gills).  I am quickly becoming an enthusiast, and have several forum subscriptions and posts, so, I am making sure I stay informed.
My problem is still again finding actual stores in this area, and was hoping you might have some contacts or know of some breeders. Your site is the first that seems as conscientious and well stocked as any other, but sadly you do not ship. And really, the shipping costs get to be prohibitive when several species go for $30+ a pop for individuals.  Thanks for whatever info you can give me.

A:  You sound like a confirmed newt nut.  I'm forwarding your email to a breeder I know.  You can rely on him.  LA

LA

Here's an address for you other newt nuts that want to contact a newt/salamander breeder.  He has several hard to find amphiubians.  He okayed my releasing his name:

Hi there, I am looking for some recommendations of an algae eater for our freshwater tank.  We have a 50G tank with a 10”+ Black Ghost, a 4” Black Ghost and a couple plain cats (each about 4”).  I have tried the Chinese Cat fish and the Clown Pleco.  Neither lasted very long,  only good thing was that there were no remains. The Ghosts clean up their plate quite well!.  The algae is winning even though we don’t have that much greenery planted.  We did have common Plecos a couple different times.  Their fins were definitely nibbled as they grew.  Once they reached 1 foot or more, they harassed the Black Ghost too much and had to go back to the aquarium store.    Can you recommend any good algae eater for us? Thanks.

LA

LA

A:  I always recommend the bristlenose plecostomus (albino, brown, or long-finned) as a numero uno algae eater.  Second choice:  nerite snails (regular or zebra).  LA
PS:
You will need more than one.

Brittany, Vancouver, BC, March 9, 2010
Hello Aqualand, I am wondering why you have the sailfin pleco and the Royal farlowella listed as costly plecos?  I bought my sailfin for about $8 and my royal farlowella for about $15. Are they harder to find in the U.S.?

A:  I was just too lazy to make a different heading, such as "Non-Standard Plecos."  Technically, they're a little pricier, but not much.  I checked and my "Poetic License (or lisense if you prefer)" is still current.  LA

Jessica Tyarks, St. Louis, MO, March 9, 2010
Hi LA, If I were to start an African cichlid tank in a 45gal, what are the most colorful cichlids that I could get? And how many could I put in the 45gal?  And what should the water parameters be i.e. pH, salt, etc.  Please don't just say lake Malawi cichlids could mix good. I am kind of looking for specific names/types of fish. I just want someone to give me a starting point. Please feel free to elaborate. Thanks in advance!

A:  Did you want me to drive over and set your tank up also?  It doesn't matter what species I recommend, if you can't find them in your area.  Motate over to Malawi Aquatics International, 11619 Florrisant Avenue in St. Loo.  I met these guys a decade or so ago in KC.  They have a good handle on Malawi cichlids.  LA

Bryan D. Long, Tennessee, March 10, 2010
Hello, I am a biologist in TN and I have a pretty good chance of having a 28+ yr old African lungfish. I have had it for three years, but have shopped at the pet store where it was on display for at least 15yrs (that was the first time I saw it anyway). The owner said that she got it when the store opened up 13 yrs before and it was already about a foot long and so unusual she put it in a display tank as you walked in. I had tried to buy it many times but the owner was real fond of it and she just wouldn't sell. Three years ago I asked again if it was for sale yet. She told me that since she wanted to make room for more reptiles and she knew I would be good to the fish, she let me have it AND a catfish that I have yet to ID for the HUGE price of $50. The catfish lived with the lungfish for a year and they seemed to get along even when I put them in my tank. However around spring of last year they started to fight and it ended-up with the catfish getting a BAD bite. I removed the two and the catfish lived, but then the lungfish decided to eat the tank! I had both underground and a gravity filter in the tank. The lungfish destroyed the hard plastic underground filters THEN chewed the air tubes to bits! The reason I'm writing you is that I've become rather fond of the big guy and I wonder how long can they live? He is grey with only a few blackish spots, maybe 3ft long, eats cocktail shrimp and carnivore pellets, but doesn't care to "hunt" for food. It takes him weeks to eat a dozen goldfish so I stopped giving them to him. His eyes are clouded but they seem to clear-up a little and then get worse, then better again, but never completely clear. Is this just normal for old fish or do lungfish tend to just have cloudy eyes at a certain age?
And yes kids and cats should NEVER be left alone with this fish! I was cleaning his tank and he bit the side of my hand! Needless to say if he would have gotten a finger, I wouldn't have one now! Oh, and he won't allow any plants in the tank. He chews them to shreds then spits them out. Also, he tends to chew on the large stones that he can fit in his mouth. He'll do this and spit them out then go to another rock! Is this normal? He also, kills snails when he gets bored, but since they are so small, he, thankfully, doesn't kill all my snails. He does keep the population in check though! Anyway, I just have a gem of a fish and it's next to impossible to get info on them because owners normally get tired of them and want a community tank so they flush them or give them to ppl who know nothing about them. Sadly, the lady that sold me mine knew the basics. like they eat meat, are not friendly, and live a long time. But that was all she really knew about them. Any info you can give me to help keep this guy going for another 28yrs would be great! Thank You,
P.S. They Do and will eat dog food, cat food, and hotdogs if you put them in the tank with them. I wouldn't do it but my daughter has put many things that are edible and not edible in his tank and he eats the food and bites the Barbies and G.I. Joes into little bits for me to clean out the next day!

Any fish that can slice a goldfish in half should be "handled" with care.

A:  Let me know if he lives another 28 years.  I've got a little 5 incher I've had about a year and a half.  Note on the cloudy eyes:  A weekly gravel cleaning will usually clear cloudy eyes.  Lungfish can be messy.  I added your report to our lungfish page.  LA

Dear Sir or Madam,
Thank you for reading this email. Our company, Shanghai Luby International Co., LTD, has dedicated to reptile area for many years.

Our reptile products are very popular in European, especially the MDF vivarium. This material makes it more like a furniture not only a vivarium. The glass is tempered in order to avoid the animal from escaping. For an easy opening the sliding doors have convenient handles. In order to allow the necessary air circulation in the vivarium, side and back ventilation has been designed which allows air to enter both through the grills at the side and the back. With the help of some interesting decorations, it is just a nature environment for your animal. This year we create a new and safety lamp holder which can perfectly match our MDF vivarium. Now colourful box packing is available.

For more information, please see our online catalog via http://picasaweb.google.com/zicky.zhao. You can also visit our website www.luby-china.com directly.

Waiting for your reply.

Best regards,

A:  Thanks for your inquiry.  I liked your website.  However, we're a retailer and thus unable to order quantities large enough to justify the costs of international importing.  LA

I was wondering if you are currently selling any nerite snails?  I am constantly battling algae on the glass in my 70 gallon tank, I already have two plecos in there, but evidently they’re not doing their jobs.  Will the snails survive with cichlids, or should I buy another pleco?

A:  We have lots of nerites @ $2 plus a limited supply of zebra nerites and tiger nerites @ $4.  Whether your cichlids will eat them or not pretty much depends on your cichlids.  I'd say probably.  LA
