One of the best black shark articles I have ever read.
I have one that I've owned for 19 years.
He is 26" long and has killed many large fish including my biggest red tail at 52" and 90lbs just by sucking on them and causing wounds which eventually weakened the fish until it dies from the injuries.
Also the mouth on a 26" fish is very big and he kills 6 inch goldfish at times and will eat the whole fish over a 12 hour period.
I keep big fish up to 6 foot Arapaima so If you ever want to talk big fish give me a call

A:  Thanks for your input.  I'm adding it to my black shark page.  LA
PS  I haven't seen an arapaima for years.

Michael Bryce, Toronto, Ontario, March 21, 2011
Great. Here are a couple of mine  March 2011 52k update1

A:  Very impressive fish, tho admittedly, a little ugly in the face.  LA

AJ Force, New Jersey, March 21, 2011
Hi LA, I have two red blood parrots and a golden gourami in a 29 gallon aquarium. Would it be okay to move the two red blood parrots to a 20 gallon high with no other fish? If so, what is your recommended filter system and maintenance schedule? They are about 4 and 4.5 inches long right now, and haven't done much growing the past few months despite a wholesome varied diet and clean water. I am in the process of consolidating aquariums and I'm down to three: The 29 gallon, a 10 gallon, and a 2.5 gallon. When looking for expertise, I have given up on aquarium boards altogether. I was repeatedly told my aquariums are too small for my fish and I just got tired of that, You know? I much prefer your email Q and A system! Thanks!

LA

A:  First off, the forums told me to tell you your tanks are too small.  Just kidding.  You're talking to someone who used to keep fish in non-filtered one-gallon jars.  (This was way before parrot cichlids were invented.)  I remember my first 29-gallon tank.  My parents drove me across town to pick it up.  It leaked like a sieve.  It was one of those old tar-sealed tank that you never see any more.  That's a definite plus.  I've spawned a few pairs of parrots in a 20H tank.  I think they'd be happier in your 29.  And they will stop growing in your 20H unless you do 50% water changes twice a week.  Use whatever filter system you already have.  They all work.  LA

AJ Force, New Jersey, March 24, 2011
Hi LA, I came home today to find that my blood parrots spawned! The eggs were laid in a clay pot, and one blood parrot is intently guarding and fanning the eggs. All other fish (including the other blood parrot) aren't welcomed anywhere near the clay pot. Do I have two females and only one of the them laid eggs? Please let me know what I need to do because I have no experience with egg laying fish. They are due for a water change this weekend, should I hold off on changing water? I'm very excited!
Thanks, AJ from NJ

A:  You could have two females or an infertile male or two parrots that have no idea what they're doing.  It is very common to lose the first three cichlid spawns.  Do not send out your birth announcement cards yet.  Wait until they hatch.  In the meantime get plenty of clean towels and boil some water.  (I saw this on Rex Morgan, M.D.)  Go ahead with your water changes while pestering them as little as possible.  Send me another email if you get wigglers.  In the meantime, take deep breaths and relax.  LA

AJ Force, New Jersey, March 24, 2011
Thank you for the Advice. I just spent some time watching their behavior and I'm convinced I have two females. The smaller parrot keeps trying to eat the eggs, and while she(?) is partially successful, the two are fighting like there's no tomorrow. Would it be less stressful if I just remove the eggs? I thought maybe it would be less stressful for the parrot who thinks she's a mom and for the other who is getting beaten up... do you think I have two females? Thanks Again...

A:  No idea on sexes from here.  Just take out the one that's trying to eat the eggs.  LA

T.K. Rath, March 21, 2011
Hi , Recently i bought two green anoles , i think one is a female and one is a male possibly , but the possible female is usually brown but the male is almost always green do you know what is wrong or is she just getting used to the new habitat ?

LA

A:  Green anoles spend a great deal of time being brown.  Kermit said "It ain't easy being green."  LA

Kevin Glover, Prince Edward Island, March 22, 2011
I was thinking of getting African Cichlids, but my fish tank has an algae problem, no matter what light I use the algae just takes over my tank, I solved the problem with a pleco. But can you put African Cichlids with a pleco?

LA
Chinese algae eater.

LA
Garra flavatra.

A:  Well, about a decade ago, I put two plecos in each of 14 different tanks of 2-inch African cichlids.  Within a week the cichlids had eaten the eyeballs out of every one of the plecos.  (lust as an aside, you could see right thru their skulls.)  Then a couple months ago we got in maybe 50 medium plecos.  My troops put them away in several different tanks (a dozen each in two African cichlid tanks).  They did fine.  Still, I hesitate to suggest adding plecos to African cichlid tanks.  I'd recommend Chinese algae eaters or any of the Garra species, especially the G. flavatra.  I have not mixed the nerite snails with Africans yet, but I'll run a couple tests tomorrow.  Nerite snails are the best algae eaters I've run across except for the customers at a sushi bar.  LA
PS
You can also slow algael growth by reducing the light on your tank.

Matt Ultrecht, New Sharon, IA, March 23, 2011
I just thought I’d throw my two cents in about keeping plecos with African cichlids.  I’ve had two plecos in my 70 gallon tank for about three years, and they get along fine with the cichlids.  One is a bristlenose, the other I’m not sure about, just a common pleco.  I also have four nerite snails I bought from you several months ago in there, and the cichlids have yet to bother them either.  And my tank is spotless!  The cichlids just go after each other, and leave everything else alone.

LA
Seven nerite snails introduced March 23.  Same tank next morning.

LA
March 25 and 26.

LA
March 27 and 28.

LA
March 29.  And they've started on the other end.

LA
March 31 on the other end.  The reason they survive -- they clamp tightly to the glass.

A:  The zebra nerite snails have been in the tank since 3/23.  I'm keeping pictorial records on what happens.  No empty nerite snails have been seen to date.  They work out fine in this African cichlid tank.    LA

Do you sell tadpoles? My son has set up a habitat to study the life
cycle of frogs and I'd like to buy local instead of buying on the
internet. Thanks!

LA

A:  Yes, we sell tadpoles.
I'd also recommend he look into
Tadpoles.  LA

Hi, I'm going to be moving back to Iowa at the end of May and am looking to upgrade my 29g saltwater to a 120 that is 60x18x26 - which apparently isn't an easy tank to come by.  I picked this tank because I already have 60" lights that I got a great deal on, and I only have space for a 5' long tank.  I was wondering if this would be something you would be able to get once I'm moved, and if so, what kind of price.  I'm just looking for the tank, not the reef-ready with overflows.  Thanks so much in advance!

A:  Well, I buzzed thru the Aqueon catalog (the company that bought all the other aquarium companies in our area) and they offer no five footers.  You can probably have one made but that gets a little lot pricy.  Four foot is your other choice plus buying a new light.  LA

Dr. Jan Halámek, Potsdam, NY, March 23, 2011
Good morning, We are planning to buy (for scientific purposes) Land Snails (Helix Aspersa).
I have following questions:
- what is the price per snail
-what minimum amount can be ordered
-do you still have this specie
-is possible to choose size?
Thank you very much Best regards

A:  Helix are getting very hard to find these days.  Check with Carolina Biological Supply.  They sell them in lots of 25 at a reasonable price.   .  However, they send a Texas land snail.  I am not sure which species or whether they are legal in NY.  Fed regulations prohibit crossing state lines with most snails.  LA

Lynne Henderson , Edmonton, Alberta, March 23, 2011
I have two Uromastyx Lizards. I was dismayed to see all your pictures of your Uromastyx Lizards. They all looked totally dehydrated and extremely small bellied (as though they had internal parasites) My Uros have bellies that look like your little pregnant Uro. They are supposed to have big bellies – that is the sign they are manufacturing water and are healthy. Perhaps you should look at the picts from Deer Fern Farms – they raise Uro’s and have a lot of info in their site. They were my Gurus when I bought my Uro’s here in Edmonton.
Concerned animal lover

LA

A:  While I don't think my uros are totally dehydrated, I will add your comments to my oro page.  LA

Hi there mate, I am Fendi from Singapore. I'm a huge follower of your site. Was wondering what other tank mates i could put my green terror with? I am getting a 4 feet tank in 2 days time. My green terror,Pavel, is about 6 inches.
It used to have a mate but i gave away the female cause they bred too many times and i can't keep the babies anymore. They are not that popular when they're young in the stores.
Btw the green terror is male and im gonna send you some pics.
Your help and guidance is greatly appreciated!
BTW, I've put some photo of a female balloon green terror i had long time back.

Tony12755, Columbus, OH, March 26, 2011
Dear LA, First wanna say im a huge fan of your website and I wish we had a pet store like Aqualand here in Columbus ohio. I own a 75 gallon with 2 adult clawed frogs, 3 full grown dojo loaches, and a 5 inch synodontis eupterus. Im looking to add a few fish and im wondering which species of south/central american cichlids would work in my tank.  Also i've been wondering if kissing gouramis would be a good fit. Thanks for your help.

A:  Any of the aquiedens: keyholes, blue acaras, curviceps.  Plus red parrots, festivims, and firemouths.  Maybe salvinis.  Kissing gouramis will also work.  Just make sure you have two.  LA

Spencer Culbertson, March 26, 2011
Looks like a map turtle.

LA

A:  Good call.  Still, there are a dozen or so map turtles in the U.S.  I'll put your info on the Misc Turtles V page.  Thanks.  LA

Shubham Mathur, March 28, 2011
On your home page, the unidentified turtle is a yellow- belled slider. Similar to red ears except their plastrons are brighter yellow, and there is no red behind their eyes. They, unlike red ears, are acctually native to Florida.

A:  You nailed it.  I'm adding your info to my Misc Turtles V page.  Thanks.  LA

Nancy Carnahan, Kansas, March 28, 2011
Hi, Amy Arnold suggested you might be able to help us.  My son has two mature axolotl.  A few days ago they began swimming to the surface to gulp air.  We changed out a portion of their water and they began turning red.  I went to the store and purchased baby water and put it in the tank.  They are no longer all red, just pink in the head. One still hangs at the top of the tank, but is going to the bottom.  Could you suggest what might be up with them? Thank you,

A:  I'm not sure he has "mature axolotls."  Axolotls never mature.  They exhibit a condition called neotony.  Do his critters still have external gills?  How much did they cost and what color were they?  If you could send a picture that would be helpful.  LA

Nancy Carnahan, Kansas, March 29, 2011
Well these are albino axolotls with blue eyes one is female she has short external gills we have a male that has long external gills. They were about $50 at Petland theyre about a year and a half years old each they have black finger tips (We thought that means that theyre mature). Well the filter stopped for 2 days then the filter started to work again then i started to notice about every minute they would go to the top of there tank and get a gulp of air we talked with someone who worked at Petland. And they said to put another or bigger air pump in the tank we put another one in becuase we had already had one in there.
Then i noticed they did not gulp air as much as they had been. Then their heads near there eyes are red we made frequent water changes becuase we read something online about this. They looked better for a day then the males situation has gotten worse his head is red and the clear part of his tail has red veins on it. The female just has a red head this is the current status of my axolotls. We also read a thing online saying that this was called red foot. They have also been eating like they normally do.I could not really get a good picture of my axolotls they are very active and you could not see the red in the axolotls very well. (From Nancy's Son Dylan)

A:  When your filter stopped, the aerobic bacteria stopped their conversion of waste products.  These beneficial bacteria died and added to the waste products.  Their tank became like a new tank with extra waste products.
The oxygen content in their water was used up by the decomposition of the bacteria and other organics.
Their redness/pinkness was their blood vessels coming to the surface of their skin to help them absorb oxygen.
Changing their water and adding more air were good first steps.  Now move them to a new temporary tank with aged water.  Then clean out your filter and make a 100% water change with aged water.  Clean your gravel.  Then add a product like Prime to neutralize all the new waste products.  If you can, move their tank to a cooler location.  LA

Sean Lamdin, Orlando, FL, March 29, 2011
Hi, I am a student of the University of Central Florida.  For a project in one of my classes, we are making a digital children's book.  Since I have numerous pet reptiles, I suggested to my partner we do our book on the subject of taking care of pet reptiles, and what an interesting pet a reptile can make.  I have seven of my own, but most of them are common or popular pet lizards, and I wanted to have a page detailing the easiest, hardest, and middle range lizards to keep.  To do this, I will need pictures of some reptiles, for example Savannah Monitors, Tegus, etc.  I found your webpage when I first started taking care of lizards, and I have enjoyed your webpage.  What I am emailing you for, is permission to use your pictures in our book.  To the best of our knowledge it is not going to be published, but our teacher still wants us to obtain permission from the owner of the images.  Please let me know if this is ok.
Thank you for your time,

A:  Feel free to use my photos.  Just credit aqualandpetsplus.com.  Since it's digital, send me a copy.  LA

What is the cost for Mini Crab do you have other fresh water crabs?
Cost for 10, 20, 50, 150? more? Looking to get large amount?

A:  We're not a wholesaler and we do not ship.  LA

Robin Adair, March 30, 2011
i own a redtail catfish and a couple bullhead cat fish, and also a largemouth bass. All are about 6 inches long. i resently removed the bass because i believed it was nipping the red tail off of my RT catfish. even if the problem is the bullheads...  will the tail grow back if i seperate the bunch?

A:  Definitely the  bullheads are chewing on him at night.  Bass are gulpers, not chewers.  Your redtail cat's tail will grow back unless it was chewed off too far.  Remove the bullheads.  And just in case it's poor water quality, change 25% of his water.  Add one of the water conditiners that replace his slime coat.  LA

Robin Adair, March 31, 2011
I've done a little research and I found seachem prim. Is it good or do you have a better recondmondation?

A:  It's called Prime and it works fine.  LA

Nicky, March 31, 2011
We have had a pacman frog for about 3 months. It's recently developed red spots under it's chin. it started out being a bulg like a bone was going to be exxposed and then it's now red and doesn't look very healthy

LA

A:  Hmm.  I'vekept them for tears and never ran across that particular problem.  All I can suggest is to change his substrate, improve his diet, and make sure he's kept at the right temperature and humidity.  LA

Dreama Beswick, Greenfield, IA, March 31, 2011
I have been trying to call your store for a couple of days now. Boy! Are you busy.
I am interested in purchasing a few zebra finches. Both male and female. I will be in your area this comlng Monday the 4th. Do you have any zebra finches available and how much are you charging for them? Thanks for your time.

A:  Yes.  Singles $18.  Pairs $30.  LA
PS
I'm happy to say we're still busy.
