Does tap water hurt water dragons and bearded dragons to drink and bathe in?? I've tried searching the Internet, but everyone seems to have a different opinion. Some say to only use distilled water, bottled water, or let the tap water sit for 24 to 48 hours, to get the chlorine out. Please let me know.  Thank you,

A:  If it's safe enough for you and your neighbors to drink, it's safe enough for lizards.  LA

we got a fish tank for our boys and we got set up right tested the water it was all set for fish so we got them some zebra banjos' and a coupla bala sharks and we discovered the next morning that the bala shark was already dead  we thought it was the stress of moving him to our tank that killed him butt I got a coupla red tail sharks a few weeks later and within a half hour they were dead too   we are wondering why the sharks are not lasting in our tank we've bought a few other fish and they are doing fine no problems keeping them alive we would really like to keep some shark the boys really like the thought of owning a shark so any advise would be very appreciated

A:  It is very common to overfeed new tanks.  This causes the ammonia to spike upward.  Some fish are more sensitive to water conditions.  Take a sample of your water to the place your fish came from and ask them to re-check your water.  Most places insist on re-testing your water before they replace deceased fish.  LA

I was wondering (I had read this in a book) is it possible to feed beardies fish? My dragon, Leo, is about a foot and a half long, and I had read the information in the book, Your Happy Healthy Pet: Bearded Dragon (second edition). Please respond.

A:  Bearded dragons sometimes shun new foods.  Offer the goldfish when your dragon's hungry.  Goldfish are a nutritious food.  In addition to protein, they contain calcium, a substance missing in insects (unless you gut-load or dust them).  LA

Terri, Kentucky, May 3, 2011
I just have to say your website is awesome! I found it when doing a search on how to care for my mollies. You have so much information on there and I can tell that you really know your pets! My husband said that my mollies would torture the goldfish during the day while I was at work and  I didn't believe him. Now you confirmed that he was right and explained that mollies don't mix well with goldfish because they do indeed pick on them. Your website is so great! (Even though my husband did win the argument). If I lived in Iowa I would go to your petshop all of the time.

LA

A:  Nearly all the livebearers will pick on goldfish.  And sometimes they'll pick on gouramis and angels.  Obviously goldfish taste good or college students would not eat so many.  However, not as many as they used to.  Thanks for your report.  I'll add it to my molly page.  LA

Just thought you might be interested in this.  I have a bullfrog had him for 8 years.  He lives outside in my pond got him as a tadpole.   Every may he leaves for the whole summer I have no idea where he goes.  He comes back just before fall to winter over in the pond.
He has been out of hibernation for about a month or so and I know he is about to leave.
He is used to me and does not jump or leave the pond surroundings when I clean it for the spring cleaning.
I have never fed him..The only time I ever had anything to do with him was when a bird actually fell in the pond while drinking and the frog scooped him up and drug him under.  I grabbed the frog by his legs and shook him until he let the bird go.  I just couldn't stand the thought of the bird drowning .  The bird lived Frog unhappy.
Also when he was younger a small garter snake had him by his leg and I rescued him from that little fiasco.  Frog lived snake unhappy.
I miss him when he is gone and I hope to see him again in the fall this year he is an old man now and as silly as it sounds I hope to have another year or two of watching him and having him around.
Long live Little Ahab.

LA

A:  Thanks for the info.  I'm adding it to my bullfrog page.  LA

I purchased the grey cockatiel a couple weeks back and think i may have allergies to him or his dander.  do you have some sort of buy back or some sort of return policy?

A:  Sure.  We'll ding you a 25% re-stock fee.  Bring him in tomorrow when Mike's there.  He's the one who sold it to you.  He'll be there Friday and Saturday.  LA

Kellie DiBattista, Pottstown, PA. May 5, 2011
hello!  I am a teacher at French Creek Elementary school in PA.
we recently completed a courtyard pond and we have been trying to grow our own aquatic plants to keep costs down-
I am having a hard time finding seeds to purchase for hyacinths, water lettuce,... can you offer me any advice?
we ordered lotus seeds from China- but not a sprout! :( and they took forever to arrive- there has to be an easier way-
any advice or info you have would be greatly appreciated-
thanks!  Kellie DiBattista and many interested novice water gardeners

LA
Even this young water hyacinth has three daughter cells growing from its base.

LA
Small daughter water lettuce plant getting off to a good start.

A:  Water hyacinth and water lettuce both reproduce by runners (with daughter cells) -- just like strawberries.  I've never heard of anyone reproducing water plants or strawberries by seed.  You'll find that sedges, reeds, cattails, irises, and most water lilies reproduce by tubers or root division -- not seeds.
Lotus plants are easy to grow from seeds.  Did you use a knife to crack them open?  They usually sprout within a week.  I'd go to a local greenhouse to find your next seeds or even a local Asian market.  LA

Do you have any tiger salamanders available?

LA

A:  We had four tiger salamanders Friday before I left for KC.  I called just now (May 8), and we still have four left.  We also have some axolotls for a change.  Call 283-0300, if you want to know the prices.  email is a very slow way to communicate with me.  LA

Manuel C. Johnson, NASA, May 9, 2011
I am interested in exodons to put in a 46gal. tank I am not sure if you ship to individuals but if you do please email me at yyy with prices and procedures for shipping. I will anxiously be waiting to hear from you. I would like 20-25 of these little critters.

LA

A:  Sorry.  We don't ship fish.  LA

Akash Varun, Trinidad, May 10, 2011
Hello i am Akash the guy from Trinidad with the dead tinfoils a long while back , well i recently gained an interest in smaller
cichlids in particular Rams  and while searching your site for info i notices that u do not have many pics of golds so i thought that u would like to use some of mine and also if u know of any info about viable and proven pacu breeding techniques without the use of hormones i would appreciate it because aquaculture is beginning to pick up in my country and i understand that pacu are invaluable species to the food fish industry in the tropics.

A:  Nice ram pics and your tank looks good too.  I'm adding them all to my ram page.  Thanks.  LA

Akash Varun, Trinidad, May 13, 2011
you are very welcome Mr Arnold its the least i can do after all the help ur site has given to me over the past few years and if u are interested i can send u some pics of some fish i usually catch on weekends such as common plecos, blue acaras, wolfish and many other fish that are kept in aquariums abroad but are delicacies where i live and i can even bother my mum for some
recipes  for u to use if ur tanks are ever overstocked.

A:  I would like to see pics of some of the local fish you catch.  I haven't seen a wolffish for a long time.  LA
