Hi, I am looking to buy some climbing perch.  Do you have any in stock? Regards,

http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Oddbal988.jpgLA

A:  I took that picture back in 2005.  It took me about two years to sell the half dozen climbing perch I had at that time.  I decided not to stock them any more.  Anyway, I haven't seen them on the various inventory lists for a while.  Anyway, we don't ship fish.  LA

Michelle Nguyen, Dallas, TX, May 22, 2011
Do you have any idea where I can get some.  Thank you for your help

A:  I would suggest checking with your local independent fish store.  LA

Kathie Potts, Moultrie, Georgia, May 21, 2011
Hey................. I got this question today.  I know nothing about Argulus.  Do you?  See below :-)
This is the little guy that I tried to ship some fish food to in Mauritius but customs destroyed it.  Had a thread about it at fl a while back.

Hey Kathy,
if you know about Argulus, you can help me, if not..............

A:  I scoped out the Utube and couldn't tell what the organisms were.  But I don't think he should worry about them.  They are parasitic on fish -- not on shrimp (as mentioned in his link).  A product called Lifebearer will eradicate them AND the shrimp.  LA
PS
Argulus look like little crabs about the size of a popcorn hull.

Need some advise. I have a 36 gal freshwater tank. Set it up early March.  I can not get this ammonia under control not sure if it's false test readings but it always seems sky high. I use the API Freshwater master kit. I have the following fish in the tank   6 neons, 1 upside down cat, 2 clown loach 2 black coolie loach, 2 albino cats, 2 angel fish, 3 hatchet fish. I have a Marineland Canister Filter 220 which has ammonia chips in it.  I also filled a Marineland power filter with ammonia chips and the test reading comes back over .5.  I was doing daily 10 percent water changes trying to get it lowered and no matter how much I take out ammonia still high.  I tested the tap water to see if that was the problem came back clean. I just don't get it. I have used almost 4 bottles of ammonia detox and I bought stress zyme trying to boost the filers but no matter what I do the level will not come down.   Do you think that I'm getting a false reading from the kit, am I over stocked?  You would think with the ammonia this high that I would have dead fish but I don't they seem just fine.   My dad is at a loss because he is a big time fish tank fanatic and he can't figure out this problem so maybe you can help me.
Thanks.

A:  Your ammonia detox solution is causing your false reading.  If you read the label, it says that an ammonia test using Nessler's reagent will test high.  You need to use a salicylate-based test.  You probably don't even need to test it again.  Your fish are an even better test.  The fact that they're still perking, means your water is fine.  LA

Elsie Teo, Singapore, May 22, 2011
hi, do you have moss balls, if yes do you ship to Singapore?
in Japan they have bottles with moss balls about diameter 1 or 2 cm, with tiny red shrimps. do you have those tiny red shrimps?
thank you. best regards,

A:  Our moss balls are about 5 cm in diameter.  We also have the red mini-shrimp.  Unfortunately, we do not ship.  LA

I'm looking to sell piranhas within the DES Moines city limits and have seen that it's illegal to sell. Any way around this without doing it in west DES Moines? In Iowa and the states around it's legal.

LA
They are cute.

A:  Funny that you should ask me.  Let me first say that the chances of the Piranha Police knocking down your door and busting you for illegal possession of a piranha are pretty slim.  They rarely go house to house.  They have however visited me and some of my rends that didn't have enough sense to keep their mouths shut.  There is no actual penalty spelled out.  They gave me 24 hours to get rid of mine.  They destroyed those of my friends.  By the way, they are not officially called the Piranha Police.  They are called Animal Control Officers.  It is my belief that they are very understaffed at this time.  Live life on the edge.  LA
PS
You're not actually breaking the law.  It's just a City Ordinance.

Hi. I have 2 clawed frogs. Had them since 7/2010. I think they are both males from reading your site on them. They are huge. About 2-3 inches. I have them in a 10 gallon tank. A friend gave me a smaller clawed frog today that she didn't want. It's much smaller, about an inch to an inch and half. But it's fat. She said she thinks it 'pregnant' but not sure. Right now I have it in a breeder net oh because a few months ago, I bought another frog, but the 2 bigger ones ate it, so I thought it would be safer to keep it separate until it gets a bit bigger. Anyways, the smaller frog is fat, and looks kind of lumpy. At this point, I can't even tell if it's a female or male. But if it were to have eggs in it, how long until she lays them?

LA Definitely a female.

A:  Females are pretty obvious when they reach egg laying age.  Even then it's impossible for me to tell when they'll begin laying eggs.  By the way, your males "hands" will turn black.  LA

Angela Blackburn, Greensboro, NC, May 25, 2011
Question: I just bought my BGK fish on 5/20 and he is 3 in long. I have not seen him since Saturday night. I turned the tank upside down Monday night and he is hiding way up inside the fake coral in a hole. Well, he still has not shown himself and it is Wednesday. I am putting food in the tank every night at 11 pm for him and we go to bed. Should I check to see if he is still alive? Is this normal? Thanks.

LA
Hurricane lamp chimneys let black ghost knife fish hide in plain sight.

A:  Absolutely normal.  Take out the coral and he'll find a new hidey-hole.  Give him a tube and he'll move in instantly.  Hurricane lamp chimneys make the best caves for viewing.  LA

Darren Li Shing Hiung, Mauritius, May 25, 2011
Hey LA, how are you?
You think those are argulus?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc48faZDzFY
Thanks! :)

A:  I be fine.  No way can I tell what your organisms are.  The images are too small.  The little critters are wiggling around like mosquito larvae.  Argulus move very slowly and rarely unhook from their host (fish).  They will not infest your shrimp.  Any remedy you try will also kill your shrimp.  Argulus look like a quarter-inch tail-less horseshoe crab.  LA
PS
If you want to get rid of your un-identified bugs, just net them out.

Darren Li Shing Hiung, Mauritius, May 26, 2011
Wait, how you knew they are in my shrimp tank? I did not mention any thing of the sort in this link. :O

A:  The same way I knew you were from Mauritius.  I guess you're just famous.  LA

Darren Li Shing Hiung, Mauritius, May 26, 2011
You are joking right? :P
I'm sure Kathy told you all those. :P

A:  Excellent deduction Dr. Watson.  LA

Jeanett Mooey, Texas, May 26, 2011
My name is Jeanett (15) and I live near Fort Worth TX. I really like your site. You must have spent a lot of time on it to get that much information about so many different animals on there. It is set up very well and it's not confusing at all!  Do you breed the pets you sell? Was it hard to get your business going? How long have you been in business? I'm interested in opening my own pet store some day and I don't know anyone who runs a pet store, or any store for that matter. I thought emailing you would be a smart thing to do. thanks

A:  It took some time.  I wrote a lot of it way before Al Gore invented the internet.  I've been involved in various aspects of the pet industry (especially the wet pets) for several decades.  I started hanging around fish stores when I was about ten years old.  There used to be about 20 times more independent fish stores a couple decades ago.  I traveled around the U.S. for a while judging fish shows and giving presentations.  So I met and hung out with other fish judges and lots of experienced hobbyists (and still do).  I wrote several articles for various hobbyist publications.  I took over 10,000 35mm slides before digital was invented.  I rented out 35mm presentations to aquarium clubs a few decades ago -- long before Mr. U invented utube.  I just had to convert several trays of slides to digital and learn the new technologies.  Piece of cake.
We do breed some of the critters and fish we sell.  I (and the government) have owned Aqualand for 38 years.
Now for the advice -- apprentice yourself to a local fish store or a local fish club.  There are currently 24 aquarium societies in Texas.  LA

Federation of Texas Aquarium Societies, 3502 Carter Creek Pkwy, Bryan, TX, 77802.

.I am going to be getting Vampire Crabs soon for my 25 gallon tank (it has nothing in it right now) and was wondering if I can keep other kinds of crabs with them (fiddlers red claws Mandarins)?

LA
Vampire crabs -- about 1 inch across the carapace.

A:  I had very little success keeping the vampires alive.  They don't mix well even with each other.  I would not mix most species.  Most crabs like to war with each other.  Big crabs will usually kill or dismember smaller crabs.  The ones that get along best in groups are the minis and the fiddlers.  And remember to give them access to land.  LA

Christine Lajoie, Cochrane, ON, May 26, 2011.
Hi there, I have 5 parrot fish in a 44gl tank, they were transfered over about two weeks ago and for the last week they have been staying at the top of the tank, they dont look like they have ick or any fungus on them and I did a paracite clear treatment and that didnt help :( .......I changed the heater , air pump, air hose and added another light and some stress coat :( there has been no change. I have no idea what is wrong and I am not sure what to do here is some pictures so you can see what they look like. Thank you I just really don't want them to die but I have no answers I hope you can help. The 6 glass cats, 1 dragon goby and 1 pleco in the same tank all seem fine, I am really confused as to what it could be.

A:  If your 44g tank is new, it's very likely suffering from the "new tank" syndrome -- basically an ammonia spike.  Usually this would affect all your fish, not just the parrots.  You can start by testing your water.  You can counteract ammonia with a SeaChem product called Prime.  If you have no way to test your water, go ahead and add the Prime.  LA
PS
Your pictures were too large for my computer to display.

Apple Jackson, Des Moines, Iowa, May 26, 2011
Hello, I want the prices on all pink hair tarantulas and all Chilean rose hairs (with the exception of spiderlings and if you don't have any) Thank you,
(I live right next to you guys)
XIO,XIO
p.s. You just lost the game

A:  Rather than me trotting back to work, writing all the species down, coming back to my computer, then typing the info and emailing it back to you -- it would be so much easier to just call us and ask for the info.  LA
PS  What game were we playing?  Don't I get extra points for having a winning attitude?  I prefer to look at it as I finished in second place and you came in next to last.

Apple Jackson, Des Moines, Iowa, May 27, 2011
Thank you I ended up just getting a pink toe from you guys. And to win the game you must not think about the game. Once you have thought of the game you have lost the game. So whence you hear about the game you have lost because you are now thinking of the game. Thank you for your time and for your stores lovely supplies.
XIO,XIO
p.s. You just lost the game

A:  Thank you for your fascinating explanation of the game.  I now declare a thumb war.  I'm appointing Kellie as my champion.  She'll be at work tomorow.  And don't think about losing.  LA

Steven Becker, Cranberry, PA, May 27, 2011
On your miscellaneous V page, you have a fish labeled as a 3.5 inch schombergi leaffish. This fish so closely resembles a leopard ctenopoma that you have me questioning my own pet species. Please explain.

A:  You may find this hard to believe, but it looks like I made a mistake back in 2007.  You are 100% correct.  I had a spot-free record until now.  Thanks a lot.  LA

Rachel Warren, May 27, 2011
not to critized but as a former rabbit show person, 4-H on your bunnies photo it said Dutch Bunny over wire photo, that a checkered giant, not dutch rabbit not sure I fyou notice, but it just a minor oop that all PS if children, rabbits are not good mix, does that mean 4-H should be banned, no kids can joined in 4-H the youngest you can join is 3rd grade

A:  The photo caption was a mea culpa on my part.  I added your correction below my photo.  The non-kid comment was made by the guest author of that particular page.  LA

Derek Gilbert, Bibb County, AL, May 27, 2011
Hello Aqualand, I have a 55 Gallon tank I'm looking to restock. I previously had 3 Pictus Catfish, a Pleco, and an unknown Striped Catfish sold to me as a "Striped Pictus". I bought 2 Pictus Catfish from Wal-Mart (Which I am never doing again.) and they introduced Ich into my tank killing all the Pictus but not the Pleco or Striped Catfish. Now after I nuke the tank with Ich-cure I plan to get more Pictus Catfish and if everything goes according to plan they will be at their max size of  6", and I was wondering what kind of fish I could possibly mix with them and the 6-7" Pleco and the Striped Catfish (3.5"...Maybe?). I was considering a Crazy/Crocodile Fish since they grow to the same size as the Pictus. Anyway any advice you could offer would be appreciated

LA

A:  Start by passing up the crocodile fish.  They are not a community fish.  Second, most ich cures will kill pictus catfish quicker than they will kill ich.  Gouramis make good mixers, ditto swordtails, barbs, and other fishes at least half the size of your pictus.  LA

Martin Johnson, Memphis, TN, May 27, 2011
Hi, Do you have any general  information on Balzanis & Firemouths? I want to put a pair Balzinis & Firemouths in a 55 gallon. Also do you have any info on African Brown knives... I have a pair of those already.

LA
2-inch rainbow geophagus, Gymnogeophagus balzani.

LA
1.5-inch firemouth cichlid.  Most are not this colorful at this size.

A:  Both these cichlids fit into the mild mannered category.  Both will mix with your African knifefish which I covered in Knife African  You can find the info on my Table of Contents page.  LA

Martin Johnson, Memphis, TN, May 29, 2011
Thank you so much and will you be doing a page on Balzini & Firemouth Cichlids anytime soon?

A:  Probably not.  I've done a partial on Firemouths.  You can find it in the right hand column of our Table of Contents page.  LA

Beverly Pous, Iowa, May 29, 2011
I live near Des Moines Iowa, Is there a store near here that sells feeder goldfish?  Thank you in advance.

LA

A:  Well, Aqualand comes to mind.  We receive 500 feeder goldfish every Wednesday and every Friday.  We're running a bit low today because several customers picked up 50 and 100 lots this weekend.  You might want to wait until Thursday if you need a large quantity.  If you just need a dozen or three, we can handle that.  LA

Cole Byerly, May 29, 2011
Can you identify this fish?

CB

LA

A:  Male golden wonder killifish, Aplocheilus linneatus, standing on his head in the corner.  More info @ Killies, Golden  LA

Christina Fisher, May 30, 2011
I have some tadpoles that I think are gray tree frog tadpoles.  I started out with ten of them, and am down to five because they are cannibalizing each other.  Do you have any suggestions on how to get them to stop?  I have them in a critter keeper, and am feeding them algae wafers and hermit crab pellets.  Thanks so much

A:  I doubt they're cannibalizing each other.  I would suspect bad water as the culprit.  In a small container with uneaten food, their water goes bad fast.  I'd recommend a 100% water change (with aged water) every two or three days.  Then I'd covert them to flake fish food.  They like it much better than algae.  LA

Holly Morey, Iowa, May 30, 2011
I ordered a p 44 under gravel filter. I'm having the problem of it being about 1 inch too big. I'm asking if I'd be able to cut one rib off the front of the filter. I believe I understood that I could bring it back if it didn't work, but I have nowhere to put my fish while I install it. Because it's a triangle tank I couldn't tell if it would fit until I tried it, but I've removed everything and stressed out my fish, I don't want to accept I did all this to have to take the filter back and wait for a different one ordered. If that's even an option. I'm sorry to disturb you on Memorial day, but but I have a tank with nothing but stressed fish in it. Can I cut a rib off?

A:  Yes.  It should still work just fine.  LA
