We don't ship critters or live fish.
Jean Beck, NE, June 11, 2008
Hello Larry, I hail from the from the great (except taxes) state of Nebraska and I just had to let you know how much I enjoy your Q & A pages! It does keep me from getting things done though, so I have to practice self control and tear myself away. Some day I will make the big drive over and visit this place you call Aqualand. But for now it is on my Bucket List (I am past the half century mark now). Take care yourself as we need your knowledge and humor. Yours truly, A: Bring some buckets with you. We're always running out. LA
Steve Adamson, AU, June 12, 2008
Hey, Came across your site. Some good info on there, and lots of cool pictures. The "Australian Praying Mantis" you have in the Misc Bugs section, is actually an Australian Spiny Leaf Insect, a phasmid, not a mantid. :) Cheers,
P.S. Shoot me down if I am way out of line with this,
but, ever try and send any exotics into Australia?
Steve Adamson, AU, June 16, 2008
Hey Larry, Dam suppliers giving you false info eh? That sux. Yeah the feeding habits between a Mantis and a Stick Insect would be quite different. Awesome shop you have there by the way. :)
I sometimes wish we could get exotic critters over here in
Aust, but I understand why we can't. All it takes is one
little kid to let go a gravid exotic tarantula or something
and then we have another introduced species to deal with.
But our native Australian Tarantulas, Spiders and Snakes are
some of the most dangerous and exciting ones anyway. :) Yeah
I guess you could call me a gamer. Nice picture of TY the
Tasmanian Tiger there. You look up email address?
A: Your spiders and snakes are very nasty. I don't like fangers that can bite thru boots. I did look up your email address to try to deduce your city, but Kromestudios had too many locations. LA

Hi. This is Tony and these are my pictures of my savannah monitor Lucky and his cage. His substrate is aspen. Is there anything wrong or you prefer to be in the cage? Please tell me because I enjoy learning from the people who know more then me. By the way if you want to copy and paste some of my pictures on your web site that will be AWESOME! If not it is ok, but that would be cool to see my monitor on your web site, because I'm always on your web site because it is so interesting. In other words please tell me anything you think should go in there. I hope you enjoy my pictures.
P.S. I gave him a hug, but I used my thumbs because I
don't want to crush him. Also, I found out he was a he a few
weeks ago at the vet.
A: Cool pix, Tony. The only change I would recommend is giving him a larger water bowl. Give him a cat pan and he'll climb into it. In the meantime, keep monitoring other web sites so you get other people's information also. LA
Tony Leforma, New
York, NY, June 17, 2008
Thank You very much! I will make sure to get him a larger water bowl, I have to admit he does enjoy sleeping in the bowl. I will check out other web sites, in the mean time do you know any web sites that you consider number one for my monitor? A: You'll have to look at several and pick your favorite. LA
Lisa, Iowa, June 12,2008
Hiya :) I love your website. Keep up the great work! I am planning on starting two 29 gallon freshwater aquariums again after my move here to Iowa, mostly I like to grow aquatic plants. In the past I've kept guppies and other livebearers. I've also kept dwarf freshwater puffers. I'd kept them many years in freshwater.
I was reading your website about the dwarf freshwater
puffer, and you mention that good tank mates would include
the bumblebee goby. I read about that goby on your page, but
it says it should be in brackish water. None of the plants I
like will survive brackish water. And from what I know of
the dwarf freshwater puffer, he'd be happiest in
freshwater.
I called your store, and was told that the dwarf freshwater
puffer will do ok with the bumblebee goby, since they are
both brackish water fish. When I mentioned it was the dwarf
freshwater puffer, she said "all puffers need brackish or
saltwater."
I've kept the dwarf freshwater puffer and even had them
spawn a few times in a freshwater-only planted aquarium.
Only 1 survived to adulthood, as I didn't know they had
spawned and most got stuck in the power filter.
I'd like to have: dwarf freshwater puffers, bumblebee gobies
and kuhli loaches. Do you think they will do ok together?
I'll buy all my items from you, as I am now within an hour
drive of your store. Please advise soon so I can head up
once the tanks are cycled. Your friend,
A: Indian dwarf puffers do just fine in freshwater as do the kuhli loaches -- not so much the bumblebee gobies. At this time, kuhli loaches are doing poorly for us. I'd recommend another source for them. LA
D. Heideman, Des Moines, IA, June 13, 2008
I am redoing the tanks for my snakes and want to know if I can use pine shavings for all of them? I have Ball Pythons, Corn snakes, a California King snake, and a Texas Rat snake. I am using crushed Walnut shells right now and have acquired a large bag of pine shavings and would like to use it when I redo the tanks. Thanks for your time, A: Pine is probably okay (when it's free), however, most reptile keepers prefer aspen these days. LA
Ted Martin, WA, June 14, 2008
Did it ever occur to you that Axolotls kind of look like Larry Fine of the Three Stooges? Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk!
A: Soitenly, but they eat trafe. LA
Rob Sokolick, June 14, 2008
I wish you shipped fish. It looks like you have a great place with knowledgeable staff. I do have a question I have not been able to get answered anywhere else. I started a brackish tank about 2 months ago. I purchased fancy guppies to condition the tank....They all lived and proliferated greatly and now my girlfriend will not let me get rid of them and I have lost my brackish project..........Is there any fish that is brackish that I can still put with guppies without them feasting on the guppies and vice-versa? Thanks! A: Well, Dr. Phil would probably say "take the easy
route and dump her," but it sounds like that's already off the
table.
Rob Sokolick, June 17, 2008
Bristlenose can handle Brackish? I did not know. I am a big Pleco fan! And thank you for the candor! :) She will just have to deal when I bring up the 125 gallon tank sitting in my basement! Thanks! A: Whoops! Back up the way back machine. I thought you were giving up the brackish project at the behest of your girlfriend. I was giving you a list of freshwater guppy mixers. If you're still in the brackish groove, you'll find most brackish fish like to eat guppies. Platys and mollys might be your best bet in a brackish guppy tank, but then you're not getting the brackish tank you're envisioning. LA
Brenda Dhayer, Hot Spring, SD, June 14, 2008
Do you ship wrestling half-beaks? A: No. LA
Matt Gilst, New York, NY, June 14, 2008
Hi, do you know any places that ship African mudskippers
online for under $15?
A: No. LA
A: Fortunately, Aqualand sits atop a Des Moines high
point (Highland Park). Unfortunately, we were surrounded on
three sides by the Des Moines River. Beneath the water in the
picture above is a bridge normally some 20 feet above the Des Moines
River. This bridge is not open yet (June 17). But water
and electricity were never cut off as in 1993. So, other than
closing early Friday and Saturday due to lack of customer traffic,
Aqualand weathered the flood. LA
Jim Alexander, June 15, 2008
I have a goldfish and a black moor. We wanted to get a hi fin bull shark but saw that they need saltwater. Does this mean then we can't put them in the regular tank with the other 2 fish? A: Some bull sharks get big by eating goldfish.
I would not mix them if I were you. LA
Matt Kelley, St. Louis, MO, June 16, 2008
I realize that you explicitly state that you do not ship fish. I've been looking for a royal knife fish for awhile now and saw you have 2 on your website. Did you get these recently, or have you had them? As I have not seen any dealers online or stores in my area that have these in stock and they seem to be a hard fish to track down. What is the price of this fish? Thanks for your time. A: There's no way that one store could have all the fish we have on our web site. The last copyright on that page was 2006, so the pix were at least two years old. Royal clown knife fish run in cycles. We haven't seen them for at least six months. Have you checked Beldt's? LA
Dog Villa, June 17, 2008
Hello there. I've been wanting a hedgehog for a while, but I can't seem to find any. Would you happen to have any and are the prices reasonable? Thank you A: We have three (regular and albinos) right now. I think the prices are not reasonable. Call 283-0300 to find out their prices. LA
Jesse Cowling, Ankeny, IA, June 17, 2008
My Jack Dempsey has recently developed camouflage-like vertical stripes, almost like an oscar. Is this normal? Does it mean anything? A: Perfectly normal. Dempseys are currently known as Archocentrus octofasciatus and formerly Cichlasoma octofasciatus. "Octo" means eight. "Fasciatus" refers to bars or bands. You see these bars most often when your dempsey gets stressed. LA
Yannan, Ames, IA, June 17, 2008
Hi, I am looking for a chinchilla as pet, and I am wondering whether you have chinchilla babies available for sale. I would like a 3-6 months chinchilla baby of White Mosaic or Wilson White color. Could you please reply to me with some updated info on your chinchillas for sale? Thank you. I appreciate your reply,
A: We have two four-month old chinchillas @ $120 each. I have not seen a white one for probably six years minimum. LA
A: We sell the mini-crabs because they're a buck cheaper. If you want us to order a male fiddler crab, give us a call. We have the technology. LA
Josh Sosvielle, June 18, 2008
Can I have your # and how much would it cost for it? A: It will cost you $4. I'm ordering today at noon. Call me at 283-0300 if you want one. LA
Josh Sosvielle, June 19, 2008
Is that shipping included? I would like one and how do I pay you? A: We do not ship. LA
Josh Sosvielle, June 19, 2008
How am I to get it? A: You should have thought of that before you decided not to live in Des Moines. Seriously, tho, sometimes your phone communicates better than emails. LA
Alex Pham, June 18, 2008
Hi, Do you have any Caecilian “worms” for sale? I would like purchase several of them if you have any. Thanks. A: Sorry. None available at this time. LA
Jesse Plourde, June 18, 2008
This is for the Purple Waffle plant on your site. It's just to tell you that they are actually not bog plants. They are actually real aquatic plants as every time I buy some, they survive from 2 to 4 years in my tank. A: Your experience is certainly better than mine. I find they live longer out of the water than in the water. Still, I'm adding your report to my page. LA
Ben Brown, California, June 19, 2008
HELLO, I WILL LIKE TO KNOW IF YOU CARRY LITTER VACUUMS FOR SALE.AND IF YES,REPLY ME BACK WITH YOUR WEBSITE SO THAT I CAN SELECT THE ONE THAT I WILL LIKE TO ORDER,ALSO I AM SHIPPING THE LITTER VACUUMS TO ONE OF MY COMPANY IN WEST AFRICA AND I WILL RECOMMEND A FREIGHT COMPANY FOR THE PICKED UP.THANK YOU AND HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.. A: Sorry, Ben. I don't even know what a litter vacuum is. LA
Justin Jensen, June 20, 2008
Just curious if you guys carry Burmese pythons or if you can get them in and how much they cost? I'm looking for a baby albino but I might be interested in other morphs as well. Thanks!
A: We used to carry quite a few Burmese pythons.
However, we now carry fewer of them (like usually none) due to our
new Iowa law that says Iowans are too stupid to own any snake larger
than six feet long. Last year it was only Des Moines citizens
that were too stupid to own large snakes. Anyway, start
thinking of Aqualand as a source for snakes under six feet long.
Burmese pythons -- not so much. LA
Roslyn Richards, New Brunswick, Canada, June 20, 2008
Good day, I just bought a Red parrot cichlid. The fish store
lady told me that I could put one (with no other fish) in my
tank which is 2.65 gallons. From what I understand on your
web page if this breed is in a smaller tank it will not grow
to its potential. Is this correct, or am I misunderstanding
this?
I also want to know how should I care for it, how much food
should I feed it? My filter seems to leave bubbles on the
tank, it has a min and max and currently it is at max.
Should I lessen the amount of air going into the tank or
keep it as is? I did notice some very wee little bubbles on
the fish from the air pump. Any help you can give me would
be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
A: Most cichlid keepers would wince when they see you're housing your red parrot cichlid in less than three gallons of water. You will be stunting him a lot. Feed him lightly as much as he'll eat in about five minutes -- twice a day. Change his water often. Save your money and get him a 29. He'll be happier. LA Ric Harrison, DC/VA, June 20, 2008 A: It's been so long (nearly three decades) since I've been to Virginia and DC that my data would be dated. But I do remember that Williamsburg had nada for amphibians. LA
Erica & Chris Hughes, Midland, TX, June 20, 2008
We love your web site and info on the Dumpy Frog. We have had ours for about two weeks. He is great. Some questions that we have are: What is the purpose of the day (white) and night (red) lights? I understand that our frog is a nocturnal creature, but he seems to hide a lot. He eats crickets well and rests in his water bowl, but prefers to climb under his substrate or in between the liner and netting of his cage. We always have to find him to hold him and make sure that he has eaten. Is there anything wrong? Please send answers.
A: Very few frogs get out front and display to the
world. They know that's a good way to wind up on someone's
menu. Most of their singing takes place at night. In
cages, our dumpy frogs always climb to the top -- as close to
invisible as possible or behind the shrubbery. When ours get
out of their cages, we always find them tucked into the one-inch
drain pipes we use for water changes.
