Hey, I just had a quick question. I'm going out of town for about four days and I have a bearded dragon. I don't know anyone that I can trust enough to take care of him while I'm gone, so I was wondering if you guys did any boarding for reptiles or if you know anyone that's experienced and would be willing to take him for a few days? Thanks,

A:  Sure.  Give me a call @ 283-0300 this morning.  We can take care of him.  LA

My husband has a 55gal tank containing one 5” Tiger Oscar. I’d like to purchase a tank mate for this Oscar in the next day or so. Do you have any good tank mates in stock for the Tiger Oscar? Please contact me asap. Thank you!!

A:  Probably.  We have several oscars in that size category.  Come in and take a look at our top row.  LA
PS  Oscars do like to argue at first.

Cant think of a name for her. I thought a species name would help. Also: every few weeks she lays scattered eggs on the glass. Is this normal??

TH

LA
Maybe Corydoras haroldschultzi?

A:  Maybe Harrietta?  The eggs mean she's in great condition.  You need two males to help her complete the process.  LA

Thanks for the info, but is there a way to sex the corys??

A:  Don't even try to sex the young ones.  You can sex the adults.  Females are larger.  Their larger stomachs make them rest with their snouts above the gravel.  The skinnier males rest with their snouts on the gravel.  Males have a longer dorsal fin.  Most cory breeders mix several adults together when breeding them.  LA

Hi, we have an Iridescent shark, at least 20 years old, (it was purchased when my daughter was 2, she is now 21)
It is approx 20 inches long, (bigger than an egg carton) lately it's been getting very nervous.
We have it in a 55gallon tank, (it grew pretty fast when we upgraded from a 35 gallon)
It eats algae tabs.
We have 2 small catfish and one oscar (I think, I call it my glass cleaner) nothing else in the tank because it spooks him.
I don't do anything special with the water, keep a 3 gallon jug filled so the chlorine dissipates from it, pour it in when necessary, every few days &  clean the charcoal in the tank filters every few days.
I know I need a bigger tank, but we'll be in the same position shortly, cause it'll grow more.........................I really can't afford to purchase another tank, and after it's gone, I do not want to continue with fish tanks. .
how long can I expect it to live? And it certainly couldn't be transported anywhere either.
Help!!!!!
Thank you.

A:  First, your glass cleaner is probably a plecostomus.  But no matter.  Cindee McDonald sent me this picture of her iridescent shark four years ago.  They just keep growing if you give them more room.  I do not know their maximum lifespan.  Read our Pangassius page for more info.  LA

thanks I appreciate the info, I had seen that, it's what prompted me to write. Any suggestions on helping this critter have a better life?
I do have a circulater pump creating a current for him to swim against.

A:  Other than buying him a larger tank every two or three years, I'm clueless.  Some people build indoor pools but most indoor pools cause more troubles than they're worth.  LA

Hi, I was just looking at some of the pics on your website, when I came across this statement:
" It takes a v-e-r-y long time to grow back, so handle your bearded dragon carefully."
On this page: http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Lizards,%20Bearded%20Dragon%20II.htm
Bearded dragon tails do not grow back. They're also unable to drop their tails like some lizards to, so aside from the normal care in not injuring your pet when handling, no special attention is required to keep their tails intact. Amputated beardie tails are the result of injury. This can happen for example when hatchlings are kept caged together, and one bites another's tail tip off during feeding.
I'm sure you guys already know this, but I thought I'd point out the information on the site, so you'd know it's there. Thanks.

LA
He's missing a bit of tail and some of his toes.

A:  Actually, I did not know that.  Thanks for the info.  I'm adding it to my bearded dragon page.  LA

Hi Larry, I thought of feeding beefheart to my discus. Do you know how should I prepare the food? Should I feed it raw or cook it with hot water before frozen?

A:  I haven't made my own beef heart for fish food for decades.  If I remember right, they weigh five pounds or more.  You lose at least a quarter of that in the preparation process:  Cut away all the fat, any obviously squishy tissue, connective tissue, valves, papillary muscles and tendons attached to the valve flaps; it should be obvious by sight what’s good to eat and what’s not.  Then cut into small enough chunks that your blender can handle.  A cheap blender will not do.  Neither will your wife's blender.  You'll need to add water to get the process going.  I always added canned carrots and spinach.    Then you pour out the slurry into a thin layer (actually layers) and freeze it.  Once frozen and broken into feedable pieces, you can store it in plastic bags.  You will need lots of freezer room to store your delectation.  LA

Hi Larry, Thanks for the info. I didn't think it would be so troublesome.. Hahaha.. Maybe I will stick to tetrabit.. Anyway, anything other food that can increase their growth rate?

A:  I find the commercial frozen beefheart much more convenient.  Check with your LFS.  Discus love live California blackworms and frozen bloodworms.  You probably can't get the blackworms there but you can probably find Hikari bloodworms. LA

Hey, I'm not sure if this is in your jurisdiction, but I use google chrome as my browser now, and some of your pages aren't viewable with it; they are halfway cut off the screen. This only happens to some of your pages, kinda disappointing to me, because, well I love your site. Essentially the only one I use to help with any pet questions I may have (Besides books). So I ask if you know of this problem and if you may rectify it. Thanks.

A:  I know of the problem now, but I have no idea how to rectify it.  You can probably use a different search engine (Bing or Firefox or Yahoo) to get around it.  LA

I'm breeding Frontosa burundis. Is your store interested in any? If so,  we can work out a price and, I can deliver to your store. Please contact me at yyy if you are interested. Thanks,

A:  During our remodeling we lost a great deal of tank space.  Our African cichlid selection has decreases as a result so we cannot accommodate your frontosas right now.  LA

Hi, I may drop by your store within the next week, and I was wondering if you had any Sub-Adult or Adult Corn snakes available, that also have a nice disposition?? Thanks for your time, and I've been to your store before and it was very nice! :)

A:  We have several corn snakes on hand.  If you want to call ahead for details, call Zach Friday, Saturday, or Sunday between 9 am and noon.   He's our "snake expert."   LA
