I started with two African cichlids that I got from a big chain pet store. They were labeled assorted Africans. I found some on your site that looked similar but not exact I think they were a mix of species of Africans. The offspring of these two are the only thing left in a 55 gallon tank. They have eaten oscars larger than themselves overnight. Can you identify the fish in the picture? (They are the offspring) Do you know of a way to calm them down or a fish mean enough to stand up to them? I apologize for the picture quality I don't have a good camera.
A: You have a tank of juvenile jewel cichlids.
Technically jewel cichlids came from Africa but not from any of the
Rift Lakes. They came from some of the west African rivers.
They are usually sold in the category of American cichlids.
And they spawn like most American cichlids. Most of the Malawi
cichlids will beat the crap out of them. Spawning adults are
eye-catching. LA

Hi Aqualand, it's been a while. So last Sunday I went rafting and found strands of Anacharis floating in the water, and I'm trying to grow it in an 8 gallon with no fish for my pregnant pair of mosquito fish. The fish tank is on my window sill where it can get some sunlight. Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Is there a way to grow the Anacharis/Elodea with a regular light bulb? Thank you in advance
A: Your anacharis will grow very well under the
light you describe on your window sill -- especially if you add your
gambusia to provide some fertilizer. Last millenia when I kept
my two gallon fish bowls next to my bedroom window, my anacharis
grew very well under the same conditions. It also grows well
under regular light bulbs. LA

Hi, My mother, who lives in Dallas Center, inhereted a male canary that she really enjoyed listening and talking to. Unfortunately he died recently. She would love to have another male. Can you tell me approximately how much the males cost? Thanks, A: Call us tomorrow at 283-0300 and ask for Kellie. She's our bird rep and can give you the info on our male canaries. LA

Hey Larry, One friend wants to identify this. Any thoughts? DH
Thanks for your help, as always. ;) Regards.
A: Looks like Ophiopogon minima, dwarf fountain grass to me. Although I can't be certain because I've never had any myself. LA

Hello Aqualand, I just got 3 Pictus Catfish for my 55 gallon tank and so far they only roam the tank at night when all the other pictus cats I had before quickly adjusted to a daytime schedule. All they do is swim at the back wall of the tank and they hardly eat. I think this could be that they just haven't gotten used to their new environment yet but I'm not sure. Any advice?
A: Normally pictus cats prefer to work the night shift. They usually adjust to days rather quickly. Then they start swarming their tank looking for food. If they remain "shy," you may need your water tested. LA
Amanda, August 3, 2011
Do you guys sell box turtles? A: We would if we could get some. LA
Amanda, August 4, 2011

Laura, Iowa, August 5, 2011
Thank u so much do u buy them or do I have to just give them to ya A: Totally depends on how many we have in stock at the time. LA
Laura, Iowa, August 6, 2011
Is there anyway u can send me information on how to care for mama and babies. Im not sure what I need to do and I cant even see how many she has had A: Read our hamster pages on our website. Your female hamster does all the work. LA
Laura, Iowa, August 6, 2011
Ok thx can I take the house off to see how many she had if not how long should. I wait A: Do it now. LA
Laura, Iowa, August 6, 2011
Will she kill her babies if I opened up her house to see how many she haa had A: No. Did your mother tell you that? LA
Laura, Iowa, August 7, 2011
No I read it online that u have to leave them alone for 2weeks because she will kill them im not going to touch them just see how many she has had A: If you already had your mind made up, you didn't
need to ask me. LA
Laura, Iowa, August 15, 2011
Hibmy baby hamsters are getting around really well they will be 3weeks old on wednesday I was wondering is it ok for them to be runing around in the cage at night with out mama A: Do not take them away from their mother until they are six weeks old. When removed prematurely, they are susceptible to wet tail -- a deadly disease for hamsters. LA
Laura, Iowa, August 17, 2011
Hi larry I was in last night with a sick hamster how long do I need to give him the drops. I for got to ask because he has an upper resptorie infection. A: The bottle probably came with instructions. However, the standard tretment with any anti-biotic is 10 days. LA

I just found you via search engine while looking for
information on mystery snail reproduction. I just
discovered 2 egg clutches above the waterline when my
husband changed the water in my 89 gallon planted tank (I
just had spinal surgery so he is caring for me) What a
fascinating website you have! I look forward to learning so
much from your articles and excellent photos. Hope you do
well in your newly renovated building!
A: Glad you like the website. LA

Josh Schut, August 6, 2011
Is this a box turtle? Please let me know if you can confirm this and would be interested in him. Please call me at yyy-yyyy. Thank you! A: I couldn't print your photo. You have a
Russian tortoise. LA
Josh Schut, August 6, 2011
A Russian tortoise? It was found under our truck. Would this be someone's pet or do we have them here?
A: He was someone's pet. He originally
came from Uzbekistan which is 6,628 miles east (as the ICBM
flies) of Des Moines. LA
Shane Forrest, August 7, 2011
On the article on the Japanese crabs it said you got them from chicago. WHo from chicago? or were they caught there? if so where? A: I get them from APET, Inc. a Chicago
wholesaler. They only sell to retailers.

My fiddler crab was missing for 3 days, when he came out of hiding he was missing both claws and all his legs but Two. Will he grow his legs and claws back? I removed him from the other 2 crabs. Thank you A: The general consensus of opinion
says yes. Unfortunately, I've only seen the
re-growth happen successfully a few times.
You've taken the necessary first steps. The
rest is up to him. LA

Hey, great site! Just my two cents: around here the flower shrimp is sometimes called the marble shrimp by chain pet stores because of their striped marble back. The rest of us call it a flower shrimp, because of the way their feeders "bloom" when they feed. Thanks!.
A: Thanks. They have lots of
names. I'll add your comment to my flower
shrimp page. LA

Hello Larry, For the past 6 months (or so don't really remember) I've been trying to grow Anacharis and java moss in my 20g tank w/ 15watt florescent light.
Both of these plants have not been
growing exponentially as reported by
numerous sources, in fact, my anacharis
has degraded so the original stems i
bought have rotted (obviously i cut them
off) and all that are left are the
branches from the originals, the
branches that i have all have very thin
stems and small leaves and have taken 6
months to grow one branch to 6 inches
(just one branch is 6 inches the others
are from 1 inch up) also, my java moss
has been growing slowly and after being
munched upon by crayfish ( i bought ONE
marbled crayfish {ever heard of them?}
and it started producing babies, and
then the babies started producing babies
so i got rid of all 20~ of them) and
have just now regrown back to the one
fistful that i originally bought (the
crayfish ate about half of it) What am i
doing wrong? recently i started using an
iron supplement for them ( Tetraplant
Florapride) Are my lighting watts too
low? i read somewhere on the internet
that i need to have at least 2 watts per
gallon but as i toured the many pets
shops within walking distance (there
are 5) i have been unable to find a 17
inch 40 watt florescent light. i do not
think one exist unless it is a
compact fluorescent which i do not have
the right socket for. I've included a
picture of one stalk of anacharis. This
is 6 months worth of growth.
A: First, anacharis is probably one
of the crayfishes' favorite foods. In Des
Moines our third grade teachers always request
elodea (that's what they call anacharis) to feed
their crayfish. Remove all the crayfish
from any tank in which you want to grow plants.

I love your site been using it for years. now me and my girlfriend try view it and it only give us half the page? can you fix please? A: Hmmm. Works okay at this end. I don't know what to tell you. LA

Hi. Do you by chance have a cover for a 10 gallon aquarium that is metal and bends in the middle, similar to the glass covers for fish tanks? If so how much does it cost? If not, do you have a one piece metal cover? And what is it's cost? Thanks A: Probably, but I can't remember the price. I'm on my computer at home. Just call 283-0300 for your answers. LA
