How much are your regular hamsters?

A:  Give us a call at 283-0300 and Dave will tell you.  LA

Jordan Varner, August 21, 2011
Hey have u made a page on long tailed grass lizards?

LA
10-inch long-tail grass,  August  17, 2011.

A:  No.  For a long time they got very expensive and/or unavailable.  I may do one now since their price dropped.  In the meantime, keep yours like an anole.  LA

Donna Paulin, August 22, 2011
I need to know some info on Pirahnas, I have one and he was good with the shirmp, and now he won't touch it, so I bought him feeder fish and he won't eat them, can you tell me what else I could feed him??? It has been almost 4 days that he has not eaten anything can you contact me as soon as possible.... Thank You

A:  You don't say what size he is.  Check for any signs of disease.  Then give him a 25% water change.  Clean the crud out of his gravel in the process.  Then make sure his filter and heater are working.  Then give him one feeder fish to eat.  LA

Kevin Glover, P.E.I., August 22, 2011
Hi, 2 weeks ago I was on a fishing trip to New Brunswick and I was walking along the St. john river when I saw, what I that was a tadpole swimming towards me, when I noticed it had whiskers, it was a very young channel cat. I had forgotten my net so I took my shoes off and tried to scoop it up after a while of chasing the little bugger around for a while I managed to catch it. After ten minutes or so I caught 6, we were in New Brunswick for 3 days, I kept them in a three gallon bucket and fed them little bits of worm. Now we’re back in Prince Edward Island, I have them in a twenty gallon tank with three goldfish and a crayfish. That’s enough of there story, I have a couple questions about the now five catfish (one choked and died eating a piece of worm that was too big), right now the biggest ones are about one inch long but I know they get much bigger. I was wondering how you would set up a pond for them, especially here in P.E.I where any still water freezes solid in the winter. Also I was wondering what one of my catfish is doing, it goes into the corner of the tank puts its head up and starts breathing very rapidly. Thank You
P.S. there are no Channel catfish on P.E.I so letting them go is not an option when they get bigger.

LA
Swarm of black bullhead fry on the move.

A:  You were lucky you didn't step on one while catching them.  You need no special requirements for channel cats (or bullheads) in your pond -- just water.  Channel cats will eat your goldfish and eventually your crayfish if your cratyfish don't eat them first (at night).  LA
PS  If you saw them in a large swarm, they were more likely bullheads.

Kevin Glover, P.E.I., August 23, 2011
Thanks, I double checked and they look more like Bullheads but they aren’t suppose to live in the St. John river where I caught them.  If they are bullheads can you keep them in a pond?

A:  Bullheads have a rounded tail.  Channel Cats have a forked tail.  Both will do fine in a pond.  LA

John Surber, Ankeny, IA, August 23, 2011
We bought a used 55 gallon tank but did not notice the chipped corner with one pane of glass that has a small crack. Do you sell the plate glass to repair this? Do you also do any repairs like this. Thank You,

A:  You have an old tank.  They now make them out of tempered glass which "blows up" into little pieces instead of cracking.  The new ones are nearly impossible to repair because you can't remove the frame.  Give me a better description of the crack or send me a picture.  Perhaps I can tell you how to repair your tank.  I don't sell the repair glass but the hardware store across the street does.  LA

John Surber, Ankeny, IA, August 24, 2011
Here are the pics. They are not the best. In the first one the thing on the left is a blob of silicone caulk and then off to the left you can see a small crack. The silicone is on a chip in the corner of the tank.
The second one is a full pic of the tank. On the right of the tank the spot in the previous picture is above the reflection light.
Do you know what the things in the third picture are? They are rubbery and under the gravel, but there was a dried crust underneath. I think they might be part of a bottom filter, but they were rubbery.
What is the best thing to clean the tank with?
Than You for Your Time,
We are planning on being at your store Friday after work (5 or 6 or so). We have lots of questions and some needs. Taking care of fish sure has changed from 25 years ago.

JS

A:  Rather than take this tank apart and replace the front glass, I'd Silastic a glass patch on that area to re-inforce it and control the crack.  Then make the back the new front.   The things on the bottom were an undergravel filter.  The easiest way to clean the tank is with a product called Lime-Off which I have not seen for a while; second choice is vinegar.  That white stuff is dried water (lime) which usually dissolves again once you refill the tank.  Handle the tank as little as possible to reduce the threat of a growing crack.  LA
PS
I won't be there in the evening, but Mike pretty much knows all the changes that have taken place (or thinks he does).

Derek Throldahl, Iowa, August 25, 2011
Hi, Larry. I've been in your store from time to time for many years. I have purchased cichlids, tropical fish, plecos and unusual assortments from your shop. At one time we had a discussion that you have purchased cichlids from customers to re-sell at your shop, and you told me to email you if I was ever looking to sell mine.
I currently have a 180 gallon fish tank that I am putting up for sale. There are two large African cichlids and two leporinus fish that must be re-homed before the tank can be sold. The two cichlids are African Tanganyika Cichlids about 6-7 inches in length. Very healthy and active fish. Please let me know if you are in any way interested in these fish. I have attached images of them both. Thank you for you time.
The tank will also be up for sale. If you know of someone looking for a large aquarium, please pass along my information to them.

LA
Some of the 55s being moved prior to putting in new windows.

A:  Unfortunately, since we last talked, our landlord has started renovating our building.  In the process we've "lost" a couple hundred tanks.  This temporarily has us out of the "used fish business."  So I can't take them right now.  Far as I can guesstimate, we probably will not be up to speed until December.  LA

Judy Yang, August 25, 2011
ok so before i got my male gypsy king tiger pleco my female sailfin pleco would eat dead fish carcasses but after i got my male gypsy king tiger pleco and he starting eating dead fish that was when my female pleco finallly started eating dead fish.is there a reason for this?is it her interest in him?

A:  I didn't understand your question.  Please re-phrase it.  LA
PS  Is there some reason you always send two copies of every email you send?  One's plenty.

Judy Yang, August 27, 2011
i mean before i got my male gypsy king tiger pleco  i had a female sail fin pleco that would eat dead fishes.but when my male pleco starting eat the carcasses my female pleco finally starting eat dead fishies.did my female have interested in his actions that she started to eat fishies? or whAT

A:  You are still sending two copies of your emails.  And you repeated the same question with different words.  Let me just say that what one pleco eats will not teach another pleco to eat it -- except wood.  LA

Bob, Virginia Beach, VA, August 27, 2011
Hi Larry, I had some angelfish spawn and I removed some of the eggs and put them in a small container. A few hatched and I had wigglers. Some seemed to be stuck in something that I'm guessing is part of the eggs and they were having a hard time breaking free so they stayed clumped together. That was last night. There are no free swimmers and the angelfish spawned a few days ago.
Now I'm seeing very few live wigglers still stuck in clumps and I'm seeing many tiny white worms in different sizes that travel in a straight line. What do you think these worms are and how would I prevent them in the future? I think that the worms are killing the wigglers. I didn't use any methylene blue this time because I had none on hand. This was my first attempt so I'm still learning.
Any ideas to prevent the worms and save future spawns?

KP
Angelfish fry picture borrowed from Kathy Potts.

A:  Angel eggs have a sticky part on their heads that secures them to the site where the female lays them (or moves them to later).  The tiny white worms are probably planaria that normally populate every aquarium as part of the clean up crew.  I don't think you can prevent them.  You can reduce them by moving the eggs to another container full of aged water.  Add an airstone to help aerate the eggs.  The methylene blue helps control bacteria and aids in oxygen uptake.  LA

Bob, Virginia Beach, VA, August 27, 2011
Thanks Larry for the quick reply.

This is what I was seeing. I found this photo on the Internet. Do these worms kill newly hatched fry? Glad you are doing well! What is a Pilates class?
I'm waiting for hurricane Irene to arrive and get out of here fast. We should be ok.

A:  They probably eat anything they run across.  The Pilates class I went to was mostly core exercises.  While at the gym today, I saw a massive tree that was toppled in Virginia Beach.  It's not over till it's over.  LA

Bob, Virginia Beach, VA, August 27, 2011
The fungus killed the wigglers by keeping them wrapped up in the fibers and most likely suffocating them. I did save two and added the  methylene green. I couldn't find the blue and couldn't get out today due to the hurricane. We made out ok during the storm so far but the wind is still blowing. Not over with yet!
I will be better prepared next time. Thanks for your help.

A:  If you added malachite green to your fry it will likely kill them.  The label says do not use on young fish.  LA

James B Hughes, August 27, 2011
I know you use some fans pictures, so here is one of my bistlenosed pleco. He is a dwarf yellow spotted, the best I can tell. He is showing off the bristles in this pic. Hope you enjoy!

JH

A:  Nice pic.  Thanks.  LA

Amy Chapman, August 31, 2011
Um yea, i was wondering if you had any Part-time positions open, and your age requirement.

A:  We don't have any openings during our renovation.  And we have no particular age requirements except those mandated by the federal and state requirements.  LA

Judy Yang, August 28, 2011
hey what kind of cichlid is this

A:  I'm not sure.  LA

Bob, Virginia Beach, VA, August 30, 2011
Hi Larry, I worked on another one of Judy's pictures. She needs to adjust her white balance on her camera. Anyway, I came up with the result below so you can help her ID her fish. I based the colors on how I thought the rocks should look.  The fish appears to have yellow or gold color in it.

A:  I'd expect to see some green and blue iridocytes in the body and maybe a red and white trim on the dorsal fin.  Probably one of the AequidensLA

A:  I get it now.  The answer is نعم.  LA
