Hello, I am teaching a lab on Animal Behavior up at Iowa
State University and my students are conducting independent
research projects this semester. Two groups have chosen to
work on organisms that we don't have access to through the
university and I was curious whether we would be able to
order them through you. One group is working on male-male
aggression in fiddler crabs, and the other is studying how
American cockroaches vary in their escape behavior from a
simulated predator (a puff of air). Neither experiment
plans to harm the animals in any way and all animals will
find homes once the experiments are through. Basically, we
would need about 30-40 fiddler crabs of varying claw sizes
and about 80-100 cockroaches of roughly similar size.
My questions are: Do you have the ability to order this
number of these organisms for us? What prices would you
estimate these would cost? How soon would we be able to
come down and pick them up? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. The students are planning on starting
observations within the next 1-2 weeks, so the sooner we
could get these animals, the better. Thanks for your time,
I look forward to hearing from you.
A: Carolina Biological Supplies sells the American
roaches in packs of 50 for a little over $100. I and all my
employees really dislike American roaches. We pay Orkin to
kill them monthly.

Hello. I was reading your page on Mini tanks and I just
wanted to let you know that I have 3 tanks, one of them
being a 1.5 gallon Mini Tank. I have been housing my
male betta (Neil) in the tank for many months and he is
doing fine. The ammoina levels are normal along with the
Temp, Ph, Nitrates and Nitrites. I have had no problems
with it, ever. I would also like to say that you have a
wonderfull website! It has taught me everything I needed
to know about fish & fish keeping. Thank you!
A: Mini-tanks are close to perfect for bettas
(except they're hard to find a heater for). Looks like you've
got four air breathers in there, LA
Deanna Vandermeir, Payson, IL, September
21, 2011
I accidently attached a picture of my other fish. I only have one fish in the in the mini tank, that would be Neil. I've attached the proper picture this time. Thank you for your time =)
A: No prob. LA

I have raised frogs from tadpoles this summer in a very small Walmart ruff-tub pond. I want to winter them here and would like advice as to how to do that.
I am thinking of adding sand, soil, peat moss and styrofoam
so they can create their own hiberiaums (sp).
I'd like to find ways of keeping the water and soil warm. I
live in Milwaukee close to Lake Michigan. Thanks for any
help
A: I would not even attempt to keep an outdoor frog pond warm. Just bring them inside and keep them in a 10-gallon aquarium (or larger if they are bullfrogs). LA
Susan Rochette, Milwakee, WI, September 23, 2011
Thanks! How do I catch them? I have a friend with a kayak pump that I can protect the tadpoles by passing the water through a fine net.
What shall I feed them, since they might not hibernate and I
don't want bugs in my house. Thanks again.
A: Well I just found out what a kayak pump is. Emptying your pond by hand sounds like a lot of work. Use your garden hose and siphon your pond into a basement drain. Secure a fish net over the intake with a rubber band. As the pond empties, your tadpoles will get easier to capture. The adult frogs will be harder to catch. Tadpoles will eat fish food. Adult frogs will eat worms and fish. You may want to reduce your adult population by freeing some into a local natural pond. LA
Susan Rochette, Milwakee, WI, September 24, 2011
Thank you again. Yes, my neighbor with the kayak pump told me it would be 'violent.' I got a ten gallon tank and a pump suitable for amphibians. I think I have an approach to this. And thanks to you, especially. I hope to start with it tomorrow and will let you know how it goes. They are bull and leopard frogs but I'm not clear on how many their are. There is lots of sand, soil and rock in the pond. I hope that if some have already made a hiber space, I can keep an eye on them and keep them from freezing. Will let you know how this goes.
PS I have mealworms and crickets ready for them in
here.
A: Bullfrogs will eat leopard frogs. LA
Susan Rochette, Milwakee, WI, September 25, 2011
Another question. Is there anything I can add to the indoor aquarium water (nutrients) to strengthen the frogs I can bring in. So far, I have captured two. A: Add a water conditioner and a good filter to keep their water clean. Frogs don't do well in dirty water, so change it weekly. Use aged water. And make sure any frogs you keep are about the same size (big frogs eat little frogs. LA
Susan Rochette, Milwakee, WI, September 26, 2011
gracias. what is a water conditioner? I can add olive oil? How am I going to get these kids to understand that they are better off with me inside over the winter?? I think they are digging themselves into the sand and stone, of course, they should. I talk frog to them. No kidding. Help! A: Water conditioners detoxify the nasty ingredients most municipalities add to their water to kill germs, e.g., chlorine. Some of the ingredients are also harmful to fish and other critters. You can get it at any fish store. You need to enlist a ten-year-old kid in your frog-capturing army. LA.
Susan Rochette, Milwakee, WI, September 27, 2011
Thanks so much! I'm doing just that, establishing an as close to natural aquarium for them. I bailed the pond out again yesterday and still didn't catch the frogs. We are still having rains, and now, today, a very young frog I've not seen before was perched on some of the rocks that still remain in the pond. I've been dismantling it to try to catch them. They know what they are doing, they bury in the sand and silt. But, I don't think they know they could freeze to death next month. I'm just so glad there appears to be so many of them.
I have 7 gallon jugs I keep in rotation so the tap
water declorinates as I need to use it. I understand
it takes 5 days for tap water to de-clorinate.
A: Chlorine is a gas. It evaporates from the water in 24 to 48 hours. A water conditioner de-toxifies it in less than a minute. LA

i really love to read your articles. A fish enthusiast myself, i wanted to make a website just like yours, covering topics that are not there on your site.
can i use some of your photos on my sites? please
let me know..
thanking yo,
A: Sure. Just credit them to my
website. LA
David Stokes III, September 21, 2011
Hey Aqualand. I would like to start off by saying that you have a great website. Keep it up.
I have just one question. Are African Fat-tail Geckos and
Panther Geckos arboreal? Just wondering.
Thanks in advance.
A: Both are ground dwellers. LA

Hi, I found your website while I was looking for information about snails. I have been having terrible luck with them. Crabs too. I've bought 3 snails all of which have died within 2 days of being introduced into my tanks. I've been keeping fish and they are doing very well. I had 3 tetras, 2 corydoras, and 3 bettas (female) all living in a 10 gallon which has now been upgraded to a 16 and they are doing wonderful. Now back to the invertebrates. I bought 2 mystery snails from PetCo and 1 trapdoor snail from Pet Supplies Plus. I wanted to see if it was the pet store. I had 2 crabs special ordered (through Pet Supplies Plus) and one of them is dying, or already dead. I cant tell. She was foaming at the mouth and suddenly stopped. She would move a claw every now and then but I haven't seen her move for a while. The other crab seems okay, for now. My trapdoor snail has shut himself in his shell and has not moved for close to 7 hours. I am very worried/upset and I was just hoping that you could tell me what might be wrong. I set up my 16 gallon about a week and a half ago. The pH is high and I cant get it to lower. I've heard that this is normal in new tanks. Is it?Nitrates and Nitrites are a little high but not much. I use an API test kit for the pH along with Tetra test strips for everything else. Obviously I need some help. With the tanks I mean. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything alright. Am I overreacting? Please Help! P.S. I hope the pictures help you to tell if their behavior is normal or not.
A1: Your trapdoor looks happy with your aquarium in
the picture. When unhappy, they clamp shut -- sometimes
for days. Invertebrates (snails and crabs) are extremely
sensitive to copper. Many medications (Aquarisol for example)
contain copper. Dee Miller, Helena, MT, September 22,
2011 A: Pack small fish in the bags you get from your
LFS. Then put them in one of the Styrofoam containers you can
also get from your LFS. Put up to six fish per bag. As
you drive to Idaho, keep them from getting too hot or too cold.
In other words, don't park in the sun while you eat a Big Mac.
They should be good for 24 hours. LA Dee Miller, Helena, MT, September
22, 2011 A: Local Fish Store. I
thought you military people were really into acronyms. The
little guys will have plenty of air. Double bag your large
parrots singly in (surprise) larger bags. Put your large
plecos in a Coleman cooler (they can't punch holes in it).
Add a battery powered bait aerater which you can get at your LBS
(local bait shop). LA

Hi ! Found your page and had a question bout stripe snails "Mystery" "I was told", But I can't find Pics an real info. Mine are small marble size an maybe "dark stripe" from Ref. Pics., Yellow base w/ Brown and Purple Stripes. They lay eggs underwater on bottom of leaves. They are good breeders, every time I try to separate the boys from the girls. One of the 2, turns male and mounts the other and I got eggs again. We also have a Purple Mystery "Prince" is his name and a Stud Muffin to his 2 Golden Bitches "Thing 1 and Thing 2" they were laying eggs twice a day. He was servicing them at least twice a day or more also. "Prince" Lives alone now with 2 stripes. To fill the tank to the top would make it a harder swim for froggy to get air.
A: I'm not sure what snails you are talking about. You refer to them as "Mystery" snails. The pictures above are different colored mystery snails. They lay eggs above the water level not on the undersides of leaves. They are both male and female within the same snail. If these are the snails you are referring to, you can find more info about them at Snail, Mystery on our website and lots of other websites. LA
Tom Wilson, September 24, 2011
Hi Larry No! These are not like my striped snails. The Aquarium Store I bought them from said they were Striped Mystery Snails. I thought they were Nerite Snails, but no. I have Googled and can't easily find a underwater snails shell with the same colors. The Link pics of the broad stripe is best. URL link pics is the closest I can find, They are either sexed and lay eggs under water on plants, glass, wood, etc... Here is a URL with Pics, both Wide Red and Purple Stripes- http://www.angelfire.com/va/myevolution/snails/bridgesii.htm Here is the only reference pages I can find, These guys breed like a fire spreads, eggs every where and can change sex or they are both sexes in one. I saw them mating at the Pet Shop and thought it would be fun to have a few babies. Wow ! They Exploded Every Where!
A: The link you sent me definitely showed mystery snails. The actions you describe are not those of mystery snails. The egg laying you describe is that of nerite snails. Their eggs do not hatch in regular water -- only in brackish water. LA
Tom Wilson, September 28, 2011
Another question about snails I've been asking around about my Golden Mystery Snail, two of my snails have caught this in 2 different tanks that never shared water or anything. The snail just curls up on the bottom of the tank slightly open. It's still alive but just lays on it's side, doesn't move around or eat ? ? ? A: I've had this happen also. There seems to be some factor in the water that hastens their death. Usually, if you move them to another tank, they recover. LA
Personal Note: Qwest's (now CenturtLink's) system
went down for three days. It took some time to go thru the
73 junk mails and I'm now taking care of the real mails.

Would a mudskipper attack a Crested Gecko? A: Very unlikely. LA
Curtis Lee, Reardan,
WA, September 24, 2011
Hi Larry, my little leopard gecko is not eating. He hasn’t eaten in a couple of weeks and I’m getting worried. He was a very regular eater. His tail was nice and fat, but now, it is skinny and his belly is fat. I put him in a container with some warm water, but nothing happened. Do you have any advice or helpful comments? Thanks, A: You did exactly as I would have. Now put him back in his cage and warm him to 80-85. Sprinkle his substrate daily to make sure his humidity stays up. Then repeat the warm bath every other day. Give him a couple crickets in the evenings. Remove them if he does not eat them. LA

Make a mobile page. I love it, its just really hard to see it in my pixi and some pages dont even show up, it be great to see while on the move here in Kansas City, MO. A: Sorry. I do not know how to do that. LA
Bryan.G.Foster, Altoona, IA, September 28, 2011
About 6 ˝ years ago, I purchased a small 2 ˝" albino tiger veil tail Oscar from you guys. Sadly, during a recent move from beaverdale to Altoona, the poor beauty did not make it. At about 10 inches - 15 inches with fins, it was the best looking and one of the more interesting fish I've owned, quite a personality on that one, would eat from your fingers, and play with ping pong balls all day if I'd let it. Can you let me know if you still carry veil tails or when the next time you might get some in would be? I've seen one coined a "ruby red" veil tail in a tank at a sushi bar in Minneapolis, amazing looking little creatures. A: Veil-tail oscars never did get common. I haven't seen one on the inventiry lists for maybe a year, possibly more. I'll keep an eye out for one. One may turn up. Who knows? LA

I have had snakes for 20 years now mainly balls, corn and king snakes. I was reading your page on ball pythons and I have always fed my ball pythons live mice. They have never had a problem eating at all. I down sized my snakes cuz I didn't have alot of time to spend with them I have one ball python right now ( female ) I have tried pre-killed mice she will not eat them no matter what I do with it she won't touch it. I have tried to just knock the mice out and she still won't. She will only eat live mice. If she can't hunt it she won't take it. And for the last 3 years I have had her its the way she has been and I have always left the mice in the cage and I walk away. She won't eat unless she's alone. She doesn't like to be watched at all. And the mice and rats have never went after her. I believe that is cuz I breed my own mice and rats and tame them. That may be the reason why they don't bite her. Just thought I would tell you what I have seen in her. But point blank all ball pythons have different additudes and not any two are the same. Thanks for your time. A: True, although ball pythons are a bit shyer at eating than many of the other constrictors, LA

Greetings from your neighbor state to the North!!! I am looking at the possibility of adding Red Clawed Crabs to my aquarium but had a few questions... I have a 10 gallon aquarium with Marbled Crays and Red Cherry Shrimp. Would this be a good or bad fit for the crabs? I also have an empty 10 gallon aquarium I could use, but need to know how full I should fill it with water? Do crabs need enough space to climb above the water for air, or can I fill it pretty high? Hope you don't mind the Qs. Des Moines ROCKS!!!!
A: I can't cipher whether you're referring to a marble crab or crayfish. In any event, crabs and crayfish do not mix well. As long as each has his own "cave," they mix warily. Both will eat your cherry shrimp if they can catch them. As long as your crabs have 10% of the tank where they have access to the surface, they'll probably survive. LA
