Larry, I have a college student in Mauritius that wants some microworms. I told him I would be willing to send him some at no charge. Someone was nice enough to do that for me a short while back and it really was a nice gesture on their part and I truly appreciated it. It made a good impact on me!!! My question is do you know anything about the shipping regulations on stuff going out of the United States and into somewhere like Mauritius. I would really enjoy helping this kid out. I told him that I could also send him some Golden Pearls, Spirulina Powder, and some Decapsulated Brine Shrimp. A tablespoon of each would last him for months to come.
Also, do you know how long the microworms will live wrapped
in plastic? It could take several weeks for the little care
package to reach him.
What are your thoughts on shipping the above outside the US?
Thank you again for all that you do and for all that you
have done!!!!
Hoping to hear from you soon,
A: I was probably napping when my contract law teacher covered Mauritian import laws. Chances are pretty good tho that you can mark the box "fish food" and it will sail on thru customs. Send it via FedEx or UPS and it should go much faster than PO timing. I think the microworms will survive. LA

Larry, I just wanted to know that I am beginning to get feedback on the fish forum that I am on. Many of those guys and dolls also visit your website, and have seen my photos there and made the connection with my photos at Fish Lore. I just wanted to let you know, as I am sure you already do, that your website is viewed and revered highly by a lot of people. Your willingness to host some of my fish photos has meant so much to me and it has really boosted my esteem and self confidence. I have never had any self confidence throughout my life!! But you have opened a new window to the whole world for me. The gratitude I feel can not be measured in words but only in heart felt thanks!!! Sincerely, Larry, Please forgive the typo's in any of my e-mails. Here is a number that I find quite intriguing........... 10,323 I have only been on the forum for a little over two months, and 10,323 is how many times so far that my photos have been viewed in that short span. The number of views that they have received, has shot past some that have been there for years. I know that I am not a professional photographer by any means and that if there is any talent there, then it is a God given talent. A: Darn, this means I'm going to have to renew
my impresario license this year (or perhaps my Svengali
license). LA

Hey i need a question answered about hissers in general. I have recently run out of ceder shavings so i started using pine shavings. Even though everyone said not to. But i dont know why they said that because they are thriving on pine shavings!I s pine bad? Or just for other bugs?please answer back.
A: I'm glad you asked that question. Cedar is the wood that has the most oils. All the rodent fans hate it because it causes respiratory problems in rats. Cedar is also considered a moth repellant. It is touted as an insect/rodent repellant when used as a mulch. Most of these "facts" are more like opinions. Anyway, pine works better. I find the larger chunks of bark work even better. They make their cage easier to clean. LA

Hello! I just read your section on the freshwater Japanese Marsh Crabs, and i was wondering where you can order these from? I would like crabs for my aquarium but the only ones i can find are brackish water crabs. Either I would order them myself or I could see if my LFS could order some, but i can't find them anywhere! Thanks! Your site is wonderful by the way.
A: Those Japanese marsh "mini-crabs" look neat but they are hard to keep and hard to find. Patriot Crabs are much easier to care for. They adapt to any water (fresh or brackish) and eat pretty much whatever you give them. I'd recommend them. Your LFS will find them easier to order. They're availble most of the time. LA

Hello, can you identify these angelfish for me? They're a kind of veil tail I think.
I'm a friend of Kathy Potts by the way, and she told me that
you would appreciate it if I showed you these photos. :)
Cheers!
DH
A: Around here we call them silver veils. The second looks like it has a bit of blusher in its ancestry. The blusher gene takes out the bars. The third one would darken his bars if you put him over a dark substrate. LA

Read http://jackdempseycichlid.com/breeding/mating-breeding-jack-dempsey-cichlids-fish/comment-page-1/#comment-533 and you will see someone stole your info and plagiarized it or whatever it is called. But, anyway, I thought you should know. Also, could a single Dempsey, Oscar, or Red Devil start as a juvenile in a ten and stunt it's growth and stay small enough for the ten? One last thing, have you seen and fiddler crabs lately? I haven't seen any alive since December (and it was my own) and any for over a year. The red clawed crabs are common here, but no one around here has seen fiddlers in ages. A1: Good eye, dude. They flat out stole the
article pretty much word for word. I sent them an email.
I'll send them a stronger one in a couple days.

I THINK MY PARROT FISH HAVE ICK PLEAE ADVISE. READ ARTICLE ABOUT RAISING HEAT AND USING SALT. HAVE ALREADY STARTED TREATMENT WITH ICK AWAY BY WARDLEY ESSENTIALS. HAVE ALREADY LOST PLECTO AND BLACK TETRA. I BOUGHT AN ALBINO FROG AND 2 GOURAMI'S A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO AND ADDED TO MY TANK. I ALREADY HAD 1 FROG SO I GOT IT A PARTNER. FROG SEEMS O..K. VERY GOOD FISH STORE.I ALSO BOUGHT SOME LOACHES FOR ANOTHER TANK. DOING GREAT. GOURAMI'S AND PARROTS HAVE ICK. PLECTO HAD SLIMY STUFF HANGING FROM HIM WHEN I REMOVED HIM FROM TANK AND EYES LOOKED FUNNY. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN ICK AND VELVET? HAVE DELT WITH ICK BEFORE BUT DON'T KNOW ABOUT VELVET. DO ALL ICK MEDS TURN WATER BLUE? CAN I ADD SALT WITH THIS MED.? CAN I RAISE TEMP ? WHAT SHOULD I DO? MY PARROTS (SOME OR MOST) ARE AS BIG AS YOUR HAND. BIG BABIES. DON'T WANT TO LOSE THEM. HELP. A: Not all ich remedies turn
your water blue -- formaldehyde (if you can buy it), Aquarisol,
Lifebearer, Potassium permanganate (which turns your water purple
then brown), ultraviolet filters (if you can afford one),
diatomaceous earth filters (which suck out the ich larvae), and
probably others I've never tried. Studies indicate that the
combinations of formaldehyde (formalin) and malachite green work
best. It does turn your water blue (and your aquarium sealer).
All the remedies work better if you warm your water. This
speeds up the metabolism of the ich which cannot be killed in the
adult "white spot" stage, but can be killed in the larval stage.

HAVE BEEN TREATING FOR 2 DAYS. LOOKING BETTER .EATING GOOD. NOT AS MUCH AS USUAL. SHOULD I RAISE TEMP? OR ADD SALT ? DID YOU GET MY FIRST E-MAIL? THANKS A: I got your email. Raising the temp and adding salt will likely help. LA

Hi, How do you sell your feeder goldfish? A: Different prices for ones, threes,
dozens, and fifties. If you want the prices, call 515
283-0300. LA
A: Thanks for the report. I'll add it to my
ghost shrimp page. If they are another species, I'll change
the page. LA
A: Alright I moved your report to my Chameleon shrimp page. Thanks for the information. LA

Hi, I use your site a lot for info on fish. Today I was reading some info on plecos and noticed you have a link to http://www.plecofanatics.com this link is no longer valid. The info I have is that the site was closed down. I was trying to check their site earlier for info and discovered it's no longer around. There is a new site PlecoFanatics.info, but it's not as good and looks new. A: Thanks for letting me know. Seems they
changed their domain provider. However, I couldn't get into
their new site so I deleted the link. Their loss.
They're the ones that wanted the link LA

I really like oscars but I can't keep them in more than a 30, so how about a 20 or 30? I would be happy if a red devil or Jack Dempsey would be ok in a 20 or 30 though. I would just keep one of the fish alone though. I also have convicts that I got yesterday that are opposite sexes that I want to breed. The male is always hiding behind some slate next to the filter and heater while the female is out and about. It's a ten, but they are breeder size and it uses a sponge filter. So how long until they will mate? The male won't eat but the female only eats bloodworms so what should I do to make them eat other foods? Should I cut back on the blood worms or what? My other available foods are sinking shrimp pellets, tropical fish flakes, crickets, and goldfish flakes. She will bite them but spit them out in disapproval. My bettas have done this to me. But if a fish that will eat anything designed for fish consumtion will try to train me to feed her only bloodworms, she has got another think coming. A: You can keep an oscar in a 30 just fine. Your convicts will eventually breed -- no definite time line. Do not feed bloodworms to your convicts, and they will eat their other foods. They will not starve. LA

Hi, Does AquaLand sell crickets by the 1000s? If so, how much is a box? Thanks! A: Yes. Call 283-0300 for price and timing. LA

Larry, This is my son's fish. His name is Oskie. Poor fellow. What can you tell us about hole- in-the- head? Will this guy's ever heal? What can be done for him? KP
A: Oscars often get HITH when kept in dirty water. His sores will heal, but the holes will not fill in. They will leave large scars. He'll need clean water and weekly water changes. LA

Hello.. I've called you a few times over the past 5 or 6 years asking about getting Axolotls shipped up to me. I've read on your site that you don't, but when speaking to you, you've said it could be a possibility. Prices up here are ridiculous for these things, and I am wanting to set up a breeding program to help out others, firstly to make them available, and secondly to make them attainable to everyone, not just the wealthy (lol) I understand about CITES permits and all of that garbage that shouldn't apply, since i think everything you get would be captive bred anyway. So I'm just inquiring again about the possibility of shipping. I don't know if you'll remember me, but I'm the guy from Canada...lol...like I said, I've called you only a few times over the years, but the last couple of times, you advised me that rules were meant to be brok....er.....adapted! lol Let me know if you have any, what types, and if you'd be willing to ship to me. And ballpark a cost. Thank you very much, sir.
A: Prices for axolotls are ridiculous down here
also. I don't want to mess with Canadian Douane (what we call
customs). Axolotls are normally shipped on ice which would
probably melt long before customs cleared them. In a separate
email I'll send you an excellent source for axolotls. LA

Hi, I am preparing a presentation about bettas to be delivered at a meeting of aquarium hobbyists in Cracow, Poland, and I would like to obtain your permission to use some of your photos (I will credit you, of course). The event is not commercial, and I will not be paid for the presentation. Warm regards.
A: Dzien dobry, Anka. You have my permission to use my photos. Next time try to make money when you give a presentation. Ask for at least enough zloties to cover your petrol and baby-sitting expenses. LA
Anka from Poland, October 21, 2010
Thank you! (I understand there'll be free drinks for the speakers at the evening reception - first steps in the right direction? :D) Warm regards A: Sounds good. Prosit. LA

I was looking to purchase some Typhlonectes natans , and wanted to know if you know where I could get some in Eastern Pennsylvania / New Jersey. I used to be able to get them all over the place (15 years ago) but sadly all of those pet stores have gone out of business.
A: Actually, the supply of caecilian woms has pretty much dried up. About three years ago, we got some in under the name black reef eels. But I have not seen them on any lists (under any names) since. LA
