Try to include your location.  This makes the process more interesting for me.  LA

Great site! I believe that You have answer on my question! I have two Tilapia buttikoferi but I don’t know how to see sex difference between them. How can I know which one is male and which one is female? Please help me! Thank You very much

A:  Sorry Tihomir, I don’t have a reliable way to sex buttikoferis.  LA

Mike Lenz, November 16, 2005
I have a 9 year old female Snow Oscar (close to 12 inches).  I have her in a 75 gallon aquarium with some 4 inch tinfoil barbs.  I want to get a male to breed her or trade her for something else.  Do you guys do any trading or have a male?  Do you buy or trade young fish (Angels, Mollies, Cichlids)?  Just wondering J Give me a line if you get a chance.

A:  We have five snow oscars about that size in stock.  I have never been able to sex oscars with any higher than 50% success.  If you think you can determine a male, come on in.  And, yes we do buy and trade angels, mollies, and cichlids all day long.  But give us a call before you bring us a surprise bucketful of excess stock.  LA

Rusty Mather, November 17, 2005
Do you have any Leopoldi Stingrays in stock? What sizes if you do? What are you asking for them?

A:  We have no stingrays in stock currently.  We can get them fairly easily, but we do not ship fish.  LA

I hope you don’t mind, but I was hoping you could answer a question regarding sponge filters.  Do you know if there is any impact to the functionality of a sponge filter if the life tube extends above the waterline? Thanks,

A:  You get 100% efficiency when your outflow is exactly at water level.  Efficiency decreases (because water flow decreases) if your outflow is above or below your water level.  However, as long as water is coming out of your tube, your filter is working well.  You can increase your filter efficiency further by giving your sponge a good squeeze in a bucket of water once a week.  LA

Whom do I contact if I know someone is selling brand new baby turtle hatchlings?  I noticed your section stating the trouble you got into and why.  Any number or website would work well.  Thanks.

A:  Since the FDA passed the regs, contact them.  Actually, I think it's a well intentioned but stupid law.  LA

T.J. Roemmich, November 21, 2005
Hi I have been looking at your website and I was wondering if you differentiated between red devils and midas cichlids?  I have a midas that has gotten too big for my 55gal tank and has killed a few tank mates, and was wondering if you did any trading?  I wouldn’t be asking for much. I am interested in either a couple young jack dempseys or green terrors.  Its fins are perfect and it is developing a nice nuchal hump.  Its size is somewhere between 7.5-8 inches and it is white and orange.  I am fairly sure it is a male.  If you are at all interested I can try to get a picture for you.  Also wondering if you have any bristlenose plecos in, along with size and cost?  Thanks for your time. Thanks,

A:  Red devils and midas always get mixed up by me.  Bring it in.  We trade them in all the time.  We have the dempseys and the terrors to trade.  We have regular bristlenose @ $12 and small albino bristlenose @ $12.  LA

Amber Radford, Asheville, NC, November 22, 2005
I would just like to take the time to say thank you for your web site! Ever since I ran across it, I go to the site at least once a day... all of your information is very helpful!

A:  Thanks, kiddo.  But remember that much of what you read on the web is wrong.  LA

Tan Ming Kai, November 23, 2005
Hi, can a lobster be mixed with flower shrimps? Will the lobster eat them?

A:  Your lobster will eat your shrimps.  LA

Aleasha Dennis, Canada, November24, 2005
Just wondering if you could deliver to Canada?

A:  The last time I drove up to Canada, they confiscated all my fireworks for the Queen.  I hope she had a fun Fourth of July.  We do not deliver to Canada.  Actually, we don’t deliver or ship fish at all.  LA

Jessica Kolaya, November 24, 2005
Sorry about that last time I tried to e-mail you. It said that it didn’t go through? LOL.
I just wanted to let Aqualand know that your web site ROCKS!!
I have been searching for web sites that would give me info about my fish and disease and just everyday normal stuff and have been brutally dined on every search. This is the best web site and I will recommend it to anyone who needs a lil info! Thank You

A:  Thanks for the positive plug.  For some reason, the last two days have been 100+ Spam Days and 100+ Spam Nights.  This much Spam evidently occludes my computer arteries.  You will have to translate brutally dined for me.  LA

Edward Huynh Lap, ABC TROPICALS & PETS, Nov 24, 2005
I would like to be put in touch with Nguyen Dinh Tuan who wrote you January 10, 2005.
Can you tell me how?  I think I would like to purchase earthworms and bett (Ca Siem) from Nguyen Dinh Tuan.

A:  Sorry, Edward.  I did not keep his email address.  I tried to search for him on the web and found out he has a very common Viet name.  All I can suggest is a web search on your part.  LA

Bill Franc, November 27, 2005
How much salt do you put in a tank with 4 goldfish in a tank with 6 1/2 litres of water?

A:  One to two teaspoons of salt (not table salt).  LA

Worrel Pic of red-tail catfish in his new 150-gallon tank.

Tamre Worrel, Fort Dodge, IA, November 27, 2005
Just wanted to let you know that the red-tail is doing great. He made it to Fort Dodge just fine so I didn
’t have to make Bruce eat him. ;0) He’s in the 150 gal. tank that is in the garage and plans are in the works for a pond to be built  for him. His name is now Felix (the cat...black and white...) I know, we need a life.
We brought the tub and air pump back today (Sunday) thank you for the loan. Bruce wanted me to send you some pictures of Felix in his new home.

A:  Glad to know he made the trip okay.  We don’t get too many red-tail catfishes that size.  LA

Unlike fish, water dogs have external gills.

Alyx Chase, Canada, November 29, 2005
I am interested in getting a water dog, and I was just wanting to ask you some questions about them, since on the internet it is hard to find information. I dont know a lot about water dogs and if you would recommend some sites that are helpful in describing in detail what you need and have to do for a water dog.
1.) What type of tank should you have for a water dog?
2.) Also do like a full tank of water or just part with some land for them to hang out on.
3.) Could you have other little fish with water dogs such a neon tetras.
4.) Do they need a pump like normal fish?
Thank you for you help.

A1:  Any kind of tank will work.
A2:  Water dogs are 100% aquatic -- just like tadpoles.
A3:  Water dogs will eat every little fish you put with them.
A4:  Aeration and filtration help all aquatic creatures.
Water dogs turn into tiger salamanders, like tadpoles turn into frogs.  As for which web site offers the best info, I have to agree with what I read in the Aqualand web site.  LA

I have had a spiny soft-shell turtle for about 5 months now. I purchased him when he was ½ the size of the palm of my hand. He is growing and is now near the size of my palm. The reason why I’m e-mailing you is to find out if you can help with my situation, I have provided a 10 gallon tank for him with UV light fixtures and for protein I give him Dr. Turtle carbon rock and in powder form too. The problem is that his shell towards the back has flipped up, and in all pictures and research I have done on him, none have it this way so I’m concerned about him. I’ve gone to libraries and I have not found any information on this, only on hard shell turtle cases (if any). He is very active and this has no effect on his swimming or activities. But I’m worried that it will affect him in the future.  I want to correct this before any health problems develop due to this. Hope to hear from you soon.

A:  I'm assuming you mean a soft-shell turtle like this.  If he's doubled in size, you must be doing something right.  However, check your light bulbs.  All of those screw-in neodynium bulbs say full spectrum, but they are not.  They provide UVA but no UVB.  Outside of that, I have no other comments.  Search for a turtle chat room.  I think chat rooms are mostly dorky, but occasionally they have helpful answers.  LA

Sherri Rew, November 30, 2005
We have a White's dumpy frog (it was sold as a Blue Asian Gliding Tree frog but there are no webbed toes, so I think it’s a Dumpy).  We’re having problems keeping other frogs alive with it.  We got another dumpy frog to go with it but it died after a few months, and we’ve also had regular tree frogs that died.  Can you tell me what kind of habitat we need and what I need to do?
We currently have 10 gallon tank, with dirt and moss and a devil's ivy plant on one side, and the other side has fish tank gravel with a bowl of water.  We keep heat lamps on day/night, so the coldest at night is about 68, and daytime is upper 70s.  We probably need warmer lamps.  We feed them live crickets.  But why is just one frog living while the others die? Thank you!

A:  Usually when you mix dumpy frogs with other frogs, the dumpys eat the other frogs.  Some frogs give off toxins.  As far as I know, dumpys do not.  I do not know if the blue Asian frog does or not.  However, your dumpy could be intimidating and/or out-eating your other frogs.
