Hi, I was doing my research so I can start my plan to breed Fighting Fish until I came across your website.
I found it very informative and have everything I need to know to be able to start the hobby.
I am planning to breed ornamental fishes for a hobby and to conserve/maintain our big backyard (about 1,700 square ft) at the same time. I might be able to use our backyard to breed Kois but I'm thinking twice as for the cost of setting up the ponds and the drainage system and all the works. So I think I'll do better to start off with a small yet amusing fighting fish.
I have read all your articles about how to breed them, take care of the matures and the fries and I want to know more. Can you help me decide what kind of breed I should start with to practice the bettas' behavior?
What is the lifespan of a healthy fighting fish? How many pairs would you recommend that I could I start with to see results in breeding sooner?
Aside from a mysterious larvae eating snail and fungus risks, what risks or dangers should I watch out for in finding the correct spot to place my aquariums? Do they need sunlight too? Thanks,

A:  In some ways bettas are easy to raise.  They take little room and are economical to care for and feed.
The bad news -- taking care of lots of bettas is lots (and lots) of work.  One spawn will require numerous containers if you decide to raise the entire spawn.  At some point you need to thin the herd.
Start with six breeding containers.  Pick six males and six females as your starters.  These are your trainers so it doesn't matter what type you choose.  I have no clue what types are available to you or which types are preferred in your area.  Once you figure out how to breed them successfully, you will learn how much work goes into caring for an average spawn of at least a hundred (more likely hundreds).  Then you need to sell your bettas.  Your main competition comes from farms in Southeast Asia.  These guys are pros.  One betta farm my friend Gene Lucas visited housed 10,000 bettas.  LA
PS  You might want to stay on a smaller scale.

I finally found a decent priced fish tank and bought it. How long would you suggest before putting cichlids in the tank? It has been set up since Monday.

A:  You're nearly ready to rock and roll.  Just add your favorite water conditioner.  Then siphon a gallon of water from a healthy undergravel filter or squeeze a healthy sponge filter into a gallon of water.  Add the "inoculated water" to your new tank.  Then add as many cichlids as you prefer.  LA

Green terrors look a lot like sunfish, their fins and body shape especially, but also the markings on their face. Convicts have the same body shape too. Are they related??? If so, are sunfish cichlids?

LA
Green terror on the left and green sunfish on the right.

A:  Sorta related.  Sunfish are centrarchids which mostly live above the Rio Grande and can survive icy water.  Cichlids live below (land-wise) the Rio Grand and can handle warmer water.  They act the same and eat the same, but they're not really related.  LA

I was wondering if your store either buys or takes in unwanted fish and baby fish. I have a tank full of silver molly babies and I think a few red tiger platy babies also. They're about a month old so they're not that big yet. Also we have some adult mollies that we might need to find a new home for.

A:
Sure.  We have a kid's section in the back row that contain different kinds of baby fish.  Bring them in any morning.  LA

Thank you so much Mike for coming to Seeds of Faith in October.  The children enjoyed your visit very much.
The children and I would like to invite you to our Celebration luncheon on Nov. 18th at 11:30. Lunch will be provided and you can see how the spider project has progressed and now finished.  See invitation attached. No need to return any forms as the invitation asks. Thanks

Hello, I am a hobbyist breeder from the Ames area. I am curious if you would be interested in purchasing a modest number of fancy bearded dragons. I have 7 very colorful, well started baby bearded dragons for sale. The beardies are Red Flame/Sandfire/Snow x Red Flame/German Giant. They are 20 weeks old, without damage to their tails. I have included pictures of the mother and father along with examples of the babies’ color and patterns. I have sold siblings for $yy. If interested, what kind of a deal could you make me? Thank you,

LA

A:  Unfortunately, we're still in the throes of our renovation.  We're unable to take on the fancier beardies right now.  And I really can't say when we'll be finished.  Hopefully this spring.  Nice pictures, though.  LA

Hi i am a frequent visitor i was wondering if you sell pregnant gerbils, i am working to become a wildlife educator.

A:  We sell gerbils.  It is very likely that every one of them is pregnant.  LA

Scotta Terry, Iowa, November 10, 2011
is there a way to find out?

A:  Ultra-sound, x-ray, or surgery -- none of which are necessary.  I have never seen a non-pregnant female rodent of breedable age that was with a male for a few days.  Breeding is their vocation and their vacation.  LA
