We don't ship critters or live fish.
Angel, Des Moines, IA,

Our cat Sheldon is MISSING! He went missing from our house at 23rd & Drake Park Ave in Des Moines (that's between 23rd & University and Cottage Grove - near Drake Diner), Sunday night at 5:45.
He's orange striped and I doubt he will answer to his
name. He has medium length hair. He ran outside as I was
feeding our stray. He is not wearing a collar because
his brother uses the bell to pounce on him. He has his
claws. He is not microchipped, but he will be once we
get him home. Please help if you can.
The flyer attached features my cell phone number and two
pictures of him. If you could please post for your
furry patients' parents. Thank you!
A: I added your LOST poster to our home page. I hope it helps. LA

My Labidochromis textilis started acting weird yesterday night and is even worse today, he seems to be slightly off balance when he swims and he keeps rubbing his head against the the sand. Is this normal or is there something wrong with him?
P.S. He also never stops swimming, when he tries
he starts violently wiggling back and forth, he can’t
just hover.

After I sent the first e-mail I noticed my male Labidochromis caeruleus doing the same thing except he seems more balanced. A: Sorry for the slow reply. I was in Kansas City. Check your water parameters or do a 50% water change with aged water of the same temperature. Warm your tank up five degrees. Add one teaspoon of salt per gallon. Remove any carbon in your filter. Then treat with a product that kills protozoans -- probably Clout. LA

It turned out my cichlids were acting odd because they had ich, three fish died before the ich cleared up, I still have one labidochromis caeruleus the labidochromis textilis and the peacock. Anyway I looked in the tank and everything looked normal, then about 2 hours later I looked again and my Labidorchromis textilis’ face was puffed up so I looked in his mouth and it looks like it is filled with eggs. Do cichlids hold unfertilized eggs? A: You
looked in her mouth. She won't hold
infertile eggs long. Oddly enough, they will
sometimes hold rocks. LA

hey aqualand. ive been using your site for a long time now i love the information it gives me and i really wish i lived anywhere close to you and not in buffalo. i am just wondering will you ship out your livestock? and if so how much for shipping also another quick question I have a 75 gallon tank here with the cycling all done by my previous fish i had for two years i wanted to know if i could keep 2 green terror 2 jack dempseys a black ghost knife a needle nose gar and a fire eel all in here? if not what ones would work for it thanks alot :) A: They'd all get along at first. The needlenose would be the first to go. The black ghost knife would work as long as it was twice as big as your cichlids. Your cichlids would also intimidate your fire eel. We do not ship fish or other critters. LA Bad Brine Shrimp News: Expect brine shrimp egg prices to jump. Total poundage Great Salt Lake poundage reported as of November 16 is 8.36 million pounds (wet weight) compared with 17.4 million pounds this time last year. LA

Hey I love your site go there seriously anytime I buy a new fish but I am a little disappointed in some of the dempsey pictures that u have and was thinking I could give u a couple pictures of mine that if u wanted u could use on your site I am a huge dempsey lover and just don't think the pics u have do them much justice thanks for all the advise though I was able to breed them many times based on the info u gave me
A: Thanks for the pics. My camera leans toward the green when I snap dempseys. No idea why. LA

Hi, I am wondering if there are any fish clubs in Central Iowa. I saw some on your webstie but they looked out of date and I am curious if they are still there. Thank You A: Sure. Iowa Aquarium Association, Midwest Cichlid Association, Eastern Iowa Aquarium Association, Central Iowa Water Garden Association. LA

Hope you guys had a fantastic "Turkey Day!" I've been
reading up on bearded dragons for a long time now, and I
just might get one soon. (the local pet store sells
juveniles for $30) And so if I get one now then I will be
able to get a steady supply of crickets and veggies and
supplements necessary, but next year I may go off to school
and petsmart isn't that close to me. My question is will I
be able to feed my bearded dragon a staple diet of fruits
and veggies and then crickets every so often? If not then
what do you suggest I could/should do? Merci!
A: You can raise your beardie on veggies and commercial dragon food. No prob. But if you want to keep crickets on his plate, you live in a part of the country where they sell crickets in bait stores. Anglers use them to catch bream (which we call sunfish up north). LA
Victor-Alan Weeks, Atlanta, GA, November 27, 2011
Thanks! And I'm familiar with both terms. I do a lot of
fishing down here, even in the current temperature (water's
not iced over yet). And when it comes to feeding them
pellets, how many would you recommend? I can't read your
dragon page for some reason the screen is all the way over
to the left!?
A: I can't tell you how many pellets he'll eat. You
can get him started by mixing them with applesauce. By the way, one of
the largest cricket suppliers in the country (Armstrong) resides in your
srate.

A: Males have much more color. They are mouthbrooders. She is probably holding eggs. LA
Morgan Van Hoesen, Iowa, November 27, 2011
Hello, I was wondering if you carry skunks at all. I've been interested in getting one and have been looking around at places that may carry them (outside of actual breeders). Thanks! ![]() Pic borrowed from bellaonline.com

What kind of African is this??? ![]()
I saved him from a man at petco trying to give him away in a
ziploc bag w/ green water & tons of poop in it. He is about
5-6 inches long & is in his own tank.

This is yesterday, the pic above is today. Is he a M.
Kenyi???
A: I'd guess he's a Pseudotropheus socolofi. Do not wager any large sums on this ID. LA

i wa s wondering if your box turtle lay eggs could i have some i live in ceder rapieds iowa and i have baby red eared slider
A: In former years, our three-toed box turtles laid several eggs. We have no three toes at this time and therefore no eggs. LA

Hi, First off, let me say I really like your site. Very easy to navigate around, lots of info and pics, great. Anyway, I set up a 54-gallon community freshwater tank recently and used your website as a reference for species info and to get ideas. The African Black Knifefish was pretty much my centerpiece fish choice. I wanted a school but had to settle for two since that's all I could acquire so far. To fill space, I've also added 4 gouramis (neon blue dwarf, flame, opaline, paradise), 3 clown loaches, 2 silver dollars, 2 flag fish, a red-tail shark, an emperor tetra, and a knight goby. The tank went about 2 weeks with this setup with no problems. Fish looked beautiful, lots of activity, only chasing I even noticed was the opaline and paradise going back and forth a little. And the opaline would sometimes pester the other 2 gourami also during feeding. But in the last 48 hours, I've found 3 dead fish. First it was my bigger knifefish, then this afternoon I found one of the silver dollars dead, and just an hour ago I found my neon blue dwarf gourami dead behind some rocks I have stacked up in the corner. All these fish in my tank are supposedly community fish, and I see no harassment going on. The fish still look great too like none of them are under stress. There's tons of hiding places between all my rocks and live plants. I just don't have a clue what to blame these fatalities on. Any input you have would be appreciated. Thank you.
A: Sounds like "new tank syndrome" -- a very common problem for new fish keepers. Since your tank has not "cycled," you have no beneficial bacteria converting your fish wastes to harmless compounds. Have your local fish store test your water. It is likely high in ammonia and nitrite. If these are the problem, SeaChem makes a product called Prime which will neutralize both. If you can score a gallon of water siphoned from an "aged" under gravel filter, it will instantly age your tank and keep this problem from recurring. LA
Derrick Andrews, Defiance, OH, November 30, 2011
I had some "cycle fish" in there for a couple weeks (cheap danios and goldfish) before getting the fish I wanted to keep in it. That was before I added the rocks and live plants (don't know if that makes a difference). And I have a Fluval which is also supposed to eliminate ammonia. Not too long ago I discovered my opaline gourami now dead. It's like one of these "community" fish isn't very community-ish lol.
A: Unfortunately it takes six to eight weeks to cycle a tank the old fashioned way. Test your water. I'd still recommend adding the gallon of very used water from a functioning UG filter. Your Fluval filter will only tale out ammonia if it contains zeolite or other ammonia-absorbing compound. LA
Brittany Russo, Massachusetts, November 29, 2011
A: In general, the younger the arowana, the harder it is to keep. The silvers are the easiest (and cheapest). I'd recommend starting with a well started silver with no egg sac and gradually moving up to the harder to keep species. I googled "Massachusetts arowana" and got several hits -- even some of the illegal arowanas. LA

I know you sometimes get people reporting some pages moving
to the left. There's an easy solution that the users can do
-- Change the web browser you're using.
For me, i prefer Google Chrome but the guppies page
automatically moves to the left. So, i just open up Firefox
and the problem is solved!
A: Actually, I found out how to fix those weird lining up pages. So keep letting me know about them. I just fixed the guppy page. It should be up this afternoon. I like your solution, too. It was better than my "go to the library and use their computer." LA
Evan Griffin, Portland, OR, November
30, 2011 A: Telling how I started would
be like an ancient history class. Things have changed too
much to make the same mistakes. If you can find a local
pet store, apprentice yourself to the owner(s). Also, join
a local aquarium club (or a national one). In your college
courses, biology would help. Business courses would help
even more. Keep up your enthusiasm. LA
