How much for 55 gallon Marineland tanks? I think at one time they were like $99.

A:  I remember that too.  Unfortunately prices go up and down like a Duncan® Yo-Yo and I can't remember what they cost today.  I and my computer are at home.  Call 516 283-0300 and ask for the price on a 55.  You may need other suppllies also.  LA

I was looking at your page http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Minnows,%20Roseline%20Sharks.htm , are you sure those aren't Puntius Chalakudiensis, the females I have seen have the same exact coloring as the males and as they get older they have a little bit more of an elongated rainbowfish look, coloring has been the exact same from what I can tell

Roseline Sharks

A:  You got me.  I have no idea one way or another.  LA

LA, I have been looking on line to see what might have possible happened to my Raphaels.  They were at least 11 years old and never had a bit of trouble.  They had been through 5 moves over 11 years because my son had the tank for a while.
Recently, we bought a little Clown Loach that came down with ich and we treated with “Nox-ich” recommended by the pet store.  The label said to use 8 days consecutively, but I stopped after 4 days.  The loach is fine.  About the same time, I was worried about my Rhino Pleco.  He had cleaned the tank squeaky clean and I was concerned that he wouldn’t have enough to eat, so not only did I leave 2 algae wafers for him every day, I also scrapped some “sheets” of algae off the glass on the tank cover that is just under the reflector.  I noticed that the algae seems tough. (The Pleco had to chew and chew it).
My Striped Raphael died several days ago.  He was the oldest.  My Spotted died just today.  They both died over the course of days and it broke my heart.  They both seemed bloated to me.  I think it is either the medication or the algae that killed them.  Do you know anything about these two scenarios that might have killed my Raphaels?

A:  I can't see algae killing a fish.  However, malachite green (in Nox-Ich) stresses many catfish.  I've seen it wipe out pictus cats every time.  So, I'd suspect the Nox-Ich hastened your Rahaels' decease.  LA

Thank you, Larry.  How long will it be before I can reintroduce a new Raphael to my tank?  DO you have any in your store?

A:  Malachite green seems to "disappear" after 24 hours.  I'd wait a week to make sure.  I have two of the striped Raphaels.  They reside in a piece of PVC pipe in a 10 gallon tank with several other fish.  LA

Can you all tell me what species of Pleco this is, sorry the pictures aren’t all that great.   They have very long spiky dorsal fins, with a shorter rear dorsal, they are not whiptails (tails are too short) they have fine stripes on their bodies, a single long whisker on either side of their snouts with shorter bristles on the top and tip of the snout, they have the typical oval sucker mouth of most species of Pleco.  They were sold to me as a standard species of Pleco but I noticed right away they looked very different from the other Plecos I have had. Any help would be very much appreciated just would like to know what species they are, I have searched the internet but the only one I have found that looks even close to them is the queen arabesque.  I have three of them, one in a 60 gal tank, and two in a 50 gal tank, both African Cichlid tanks. Thank you

Synodontis eupterus commonly known as the featherfin catfish, February 3, 2012.

A:  Not a pleco but one of the Synodontis species that tend to swim upside down.  They do not eat algae.  They get along great with African cichlids.  I've tried to (unsuccessfully) breed them over the years.  Go to Syn eupterus for a wide variety of pictures.  LA

If this link does not work, you can find them on the Table of Content (unfinished) page.

Thank you so very much!   Apparently Walmart fish department does not know what they are because it was sold as a pleco . They are a very graceful and beautiful fish we enjoy watching them when they come out to eat.

A:  I could not have said it better myself.  LA

hi do you have Galaxy rasbora  for sale right now?

A:  We get them from time to time, but have none in stock right now.  LA

Spotted two grey green neckring in Louisiana  Feb 3 2012 at a home feeder near Leesville, think it was a pair and they were beautiful.

A:  I don't get many birding reports.  You may want to watch the movie "The Big Year."  It revolves around  bird watching in 1998, the year El Niño brought an unpricedented number of species to North America.  LA

Therefore, I hope you can give me some info how to determining the sex of the fish then I can have many choice to check on my fishes. Thank you, regards!

A:  Xin lỗi, Vinh.  I have no idea how to sex black ghost knife fish.  LA

Hi LA, You know Vietnamese? Very nice. Do you have information on the time, or at which size, the fish will mature? Regards

A:  I don't really know Vietnamese.  We just have several Vietnamese customers, so I've picked up a few polite phrases.  And I do not know at what age the BGKs become sexually mature.  It's starting to look like I could build an entire website of things I don't know.  LA

Vĩnh Tiến, Viet Nam, February 9, 2012
Hi Larry! It is okay, cause I'm studying Aquaculture in Cantho University, VN then I wanna know more information about culturing some strange fish! I think you know much about fish, aren't you? Would you please if we can exchange some information if need be? Thank you!

A:  You're welcome to any info I actually know.  But sometimes I encounter questions I do not know the answer to.  In fact, it seems to happen a lot lately.  LA

I read that aponogeton plants are easily grown.  I was wondering if they are safe for water dragons, and if so, will they grow well in humid conditions rather than under water?  If not, can you recommend plants that are safe for Chinese Water Dragons please? Thank you,

LA

A:  Aponogetons do grow easily -- under water.  I've never seen rhem grow emersed.  If you decorate with edible plants, your water dragon will likely consume or crush your decor.  I'd recommend any of the plastic plants specifically designed for lizards.  Smaller plants work with small dragons.  Heftier dragons will need much sturdier plants.  LA

Mitzi Glick, February 8, 2012
I have plastic plants now, but want to use live plants to help with humidity and to create a more natural environment.  I want to make sure that I do not use anything that is toxic in case the dragon nibbles it.  The cage is 2 ft high and has a 2 ft by 1.5 ft base.  Can you recommend plants that would be safe if consumed please (I don't mind if he eats some of it)?  The dragon is still a baby whose head is smaller that my finger tip.  Can you also explain shipping on your merchandise?

A:  If you google "toxic plants." you'll find several lists of plants you should not use.  You'll have to decide which ones you want to use by making sure they're not on any of those lists.  We do not ship.  LA

Mr. Larry Arnold, I would like to start off by thanking you for such a great and informative site! It has helped me a lot in the past and I have gone through literally every single page. My reason for writing this letter is about your page about Peacock Bass. You said on your site that you can keep these fish in a tank 55 gallons or larger. Most people who keep these fish will say that you need at least a 180 gallon tank, as a minimum! P bass are some of the largest fish in the hobby, and quite commonly top 2 feet in length. If you would be so kind, could you change the tank requirements for this page to better suit this fish?

2-inch peacock bass full of rosy reds.

A:  I've had lots of little peacock bass but only one really large one.  I'll add your info to my peacock page.  Thanks for your input.  LA

Hello Again Larry, I was reading your page about Halloween Crabs and saw that you got some out of Chicago in 2007. Could you tell me where you got them from? I am interested in seeing their stock. Thank you.

LA
Hefty size blue moon crab also known as the Halloween crab.  Probable male.

A:  I got them from APET, a Chicago-area wholesaler.  They sell only to retailers.  Halloween crabs don't show up very often.  Ask your LFS to stock them for your.  Today (Feb 10) APET lists these crabs:

Crab

F3143

Crab Mandarin

F3132

Crab Mini

F3124

Crab Panther

F3136

Crab Patriot
