Hi, I catch a lot of fish in a creek and I'm haveing trouble identifying a specific one. Could u look at my pictures and help??

JH

A:  I can try,  LA

Jacob Hadley, February 22, 2012
i finaly found it in a book, it is a pygmy sunfish, it kinda resembles the chameleon fish.

A:  Next time you can google your state's list of fishes and find out a lot quicker.  LA

Larry Plover, Stow, OH, February 23, 2012
Hi Larry- I love all the information on your site. Your photos are amazing! They have helped me understand what many of these species look like better than most of the identification guides I have looked at over the decades. My sincere thanks! Could you offer any advice on how absolute amateurs should take pictures of fish in home aquariums? Thank you for any advice.
Also, could the lizard with the provisional ID of "blue-line skink" (Misc. Lizards XXVII) possibly be a Platysaurus maybe even P. broadleyi or P. intermedus? Best,

A2:  First, I often don't ever learn the scientific names of some lizards.  Sometimes my suppliers don't know either.
A1:  Always shoot your pictures at an angle.  Take lots of pictures of the same fish.  Take them in different light conditions, different surroundings,  and on different days.  Throw away most of them.  Crop out all the extraneous stuff.  Repeat until you wear out your camera.  LA

hello my name is Jenn. i come into your store alot to get food for my tokay gecko. she is 7 years of age and a sweet thing. i looked over your web page and i did not see any fish tanks for sale. i was wondering if you had any used tanks that you were looking to sell. i am looking for at lest a 30 gal. you have always treated me very nice. and the food i get my gecko stays alive the longest (meal worms) so i wanted to see if i could also use my cash with you to get a tank. and of course i would get all my fish with you guys as well. thanks for taking the time out and reading this.

To The Dragons The Earth Shall Go

A:  We have beau coup used tanks for sale.  Call 283-0300 and ask Mike what size and prices we have.  Also, when you come in, look at our Dubia Roach special.  Your tokay will love them.  LA

Molly Nagel, Iowa, February 23, 2012
Hi, I was just wondering if you have any bumblebee gobies right now, and how much they sell for.  Looking to add 3-5 to a tank with a figure eight puffer.  Thanks!

A:  I read your email before going to work this morning.  Then in the excitement of shoveling my walk, sweeping the snow off my car, and putting away today's shipment of fish, I forgot to look for bumblebee gobies.  Sorry.  Just call 283-0300 and ask Kellie to check on how many we have and the price.  They're three or four bucks.  LA
PS  Keep your puffer well fed.  I don't trust them around most fish.

Cheryl Sterrenburg, Milwaukee, WI, February 24, 2012
Hello, Do you sell cholla?  Looking for a nice sized piece to go into a future crabitat (70 gallon bow).  If so, where can I go on your site to see...and cost (shipping to milwaukee wi). Thanks

A:  We really don't sell stuff on our website.  However, Mike goes out west every so often and captures cholla wood from the wild.  I don't know if he has a chunk in his garage that will fit your need.  Give him a call at 515 283-0300 and ask him.  LA

Hello. I was hoping you might have some insight on something I experienced lately. (yesterday and this morning). When I turned my lights on my 55 gallon tank this morning, two out of my three Congo Tetras had passed on. Come to the clearing at the end of the path, as some say. I am still bummed out about this, and what I can't figure out is why. I had another die yesterday afternoon. For three fish of the same species to all die inside of 24 hours strikes me as a massive red flag. As near as I can tell, the tank is healthy. None of the other fish seem to have anything wrong with them. The tank is a standard 55 gallon with a Marineland emperor 400 filter. I just cleaned the filter a couple of days ago. One thing I did do recently that's been out of the ordinary is for about three days, I did a small water change of about five-ten gallons every day. [I was actually taking water from that tank and putting it into a ten gallon with guppies, I was doing some things wrong with that tank and the water kept clouding up, so I was changing out most of the water and using established water from the 55 to fill it so I wouldn't damage the tank's cycle.] Could that have thrown off the cycle in the big tank enough to kill three Congo Tetras? Mathematically I don't think so. The rule I go by is never to change more than half your water at once, and I don't think over the course of three days and small water changes I ever hit half of it. Another thing I did that was out of the ordinary was throw in about half a dozen rosy-reds to see if my ghost-knife would eat them. (not sure if the knife fish got any but they were gone by the next morning) I'm taking my water in to get tested today, but it seems like the damage is already done, whatever it was. Anyway, the root of this e mail is just me asking if you know of anything that could cause my three full grown male Congo Tetras to just up and die? I am upset because those were some of my favorite fish, and because I paid 11 dollars for each one, and had them special ordered since nobody around here has them.
In case it matters, what's in the tank are One female green Severum, one Ghost knife fish, One Featherfin Synodontis, One Buenos Aries tetra (there used to be a school of them) one Leopard Ctctenopoma, One Colombian Tetra (used to be a school of them) One Rope Fish, three Diamond Tetras, One bloated looking fantail (twin tail)? goldfish (It was free) One Rhino Plecostomas, Two fire mouths, One Convict Cichlid. (I thought it was a Fire mouth when I bought it) One Angelfish, and three Malabar Danios. And one remaining Congo Tetra. That probably seems like an odd mish mash of fish that probably shouldn't all live together, but My tank actually seems free from any violence. I've never lost a fish due to it being eaten by another fish. My tetras are all big enough not to be considered food. The former schools of Tetras shrank little by little, not a sudden die off like what has happened with the Congos.
Thank's for your time.

A:  I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help.  Your water changes were not enough to cause a problem.  Your filter cleaning might have reduced your biological filtration but that would cause more problems than just your Congos.  You'll know more when you get your test reports back, but I can't point to any specific cause of the problem.  LA

Hi, after my leaf fish died last week I decided to get a cichild to go in with the Green Terror I already have and went to my local store and purchased a Firemouth. I came home and did the whole acclimation process and then put him in the tank and about a minute after he came out of the bag the green terror shot out at him from some plants and attacked and the firemouth just swam away. The Green terror is small only about 3 inches and the Firemouth is larger about 4.5 inches. So I though okay just some small little I'm the boss kinda stuff going on so I left and came back and checked on him and saw that he was still being attacked and was severely injured so I took a clear plastic container and put it in the tank and got the terror and put the container over him to stop the attack for now.
Knowing that the he couldn't stay there for ever I put in a tank divider and let him out. Time after time the terror would still get through some how and attack and and he has stopped lately. Today I was going to feed them some frozen little shrimps and because the firemouth was slowly beginning to recover and i figure that after a few weeks and the firemouth being on his feet the terror would stop, I saw the terror got over again so i netted him and put him in the other side and gave the shrimp to the firemouth and my Africans. So I'm out of ideas should I just keep doing what I'm doing or try something else or was it just a bad idea to get the firemouth? Sincerely,

LA

A:  I've always found firemouths to be on the sissy side.  And I think you're learning how the green terror earned his name.  I'm afraid you'll need to keep them separated.  LA
PS  I currently have a 37H with a half-dozen 3-inch green terrors and a half dozen 3-inch firemouths (plus some miscellaneous fish) peacefully co-existing.  So go figure.  Separate them.
PPS  Miscellaneous fish in there -- several frontosas, one distochodus, and a ranbow shark.

The unidentified 8 incher looks like a rainbow cichlid like the little ones above. How often do convicts breed???

LA
Absolutely no idea what this 8-incher is.

A1:  You could be right, but it has no color -- even in the picture taken later.
A2:  Well conditioned convicts can breed every three weeks if you take away their eggs..  LA

Chris Lee, Reardan, WA, February 29, 2012
So far, my convicts have been breeding every four weeks. The older siblings (21 of the little turds) ate all of the new babies. NEXT TIME I WILL REMOVE THEM!!

A:  Mr. Obvious agrees with you.  LA

Jenn White, February 28, 2012
Do u sell BioCubes? If so what sizes and what are the prices? Also does urs come with anything....some places sell them with the heater, filter, etc...
Thanks so Much,

A:  Sorry, Jenn.  We don't sell them.  LA

Brandon Harris, Maryland, February 28, 2012
Ok Im Brandon from Maryland and I love your site!
I've got multiple questions.
1. Do you have any information on Kingsnakes?
2. Do you have any kingsnakes?
3. Do you ship snakes?

A:  Yes, Yes, No.  You can probably find what you're looking for at kingsnake.comLA

Brandon Harris, Maryland, March 1, 2012
Ok I found the kingsnakes page thanks but they really do not have info
on how to care for them and I keep getting different info from
everyone?

A:  Okay, I thought you were looking for more info than my page on kingsnakes provides.  Go to King & Milk for more kingsnake info.  LA

ECL CL, February 28, 2012
Hi,  Do you guys sell Amphibians? Are you guys located in Iowa?

A:  Yes and yes, but we do not ship.  You may be able to get what you want from Michael Shrom <shrommj@ptd.net>.  LA

Curtis Lee, Reardan, WA, Febtuary 29, 2012
The reason for the Payara's nasty chompers is to come from below and puncture the swimbladder of other fish. With their swimbladder punctured, fish are not able to swim correctly, and make and easy picking for the Payara.

LA

A:  This guy had no trouble chasing down all the fish I offered him except a zebra danio.  He is fast.  LA
