A. Wilson, Fayetteville, AK, December 1, 2007
Hello, We're trying to purchase two Electric eels for a research project at the University of Arkansas. We have excellent facilities, but have not had any luck finding eels for sale. Perhaps you could point us in the right direction? Thanks much...great website! Best regards, A: Oddball fishes are not the ones you see on the wholesale lists every day (or even every year). We bought our last ones from APET in Illinois. They haven't listed them for a couple years. You might contact them and see if they plan to bring any in this coming summer in Amazonia. You never know. At least I never know. LA

RE November 30 email about bullhead not eating Thanks for the reply. Well I hope that's just what it is. He's a cute fish, and I'd like to see him get bigger. He actually did eat last night when I gave the goldfish I brought for him to eat some goldfish flakes and they fell to the bottom. He came from under the filter even though the lights were on and gobbled down some. But today he won't do it unless the towel is down. I'm also feeling the urge to move him from the small aquarium soon because the goldfish have bad looking fins. Either the other goldfish in the Wal-Mart aquarium ate them, or they have something wrong. Now my last question is, will bullheads get along with things like a kuhli loach, and blue channel catfish? In my last aquarium I had a kuhli loach that lasted 8 years, he was a very good fish. And since I probably will never find another bullhead to keep with this one (or is there a place online that I could order one? Or maybe even an actual channel cat instead of albinos?) I'd like to add a blue channel or two to my aquarium, but I'm not sure all these will combine together. Thanks for your help. A: Sounds like your bullhead was eating -- goldfish fins. Bullheads will love kuhli loaches -- just like extra wiggly worms. Bullheads will get along with channel cats. They're very similar (voracious eaters). LA

Do you sell the Aponogeton bulbs? I can't find them anywhere, and I would like to plant my 100 gallon tank with them . Thanks for your time! A: Most fish stores sell aponogeton bulbs (usually A. crispus). Sometimes they call them "wonder bulbs." LA

My 2 inch Tiger Oscar that I have had now for about 3 weeks just started sitting at the bottom, rarely eating, and remaining inactive. The water is fine. It has no diseases that are visible. The water is remaining at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. If anything what should I do? A: Bump him up to 80. LA

I wish to purchase a gift card as a Christmas gift for my sister-in-law who lives in Waukee. Are they available? If so can I can purchase one by mail, e-mail or over the phone? Thanks, A: By phone is fine. Have your credit card ready. Then we'll mail the certificate to you. LA
Peyton Gaumer, Ankeny, IA, December 1, 2007
I read an article in Aquarium Fish magazine about angelfish dying mysteriously. They think as a result of selective breeding, so now I'm getting an oscar. I know they're messy so, along with an under gravel filter, I have a power filter that turns the tank over six times per hour. Is this enough? Also, with school, and swimming, I can only do water changes weekly, so what volume should they be. The tank is 30 gallons. A: I'm not sure I understand your angel comments. Your filtration systems are fine for your oscar. Since he's small, a 20% weekly water change is fine. LA

Hello there! I hope you're not getting the same blizzard that we're enduring right now! We've run into a bit of an unfortunate circumstance with our tropical semi-aggressive tank. Last night we noticed our pair of clown loaches swimming side by side, resting on a stump directly under the current of our riverine powerhead setup. Needless to say it piqued my curiosity and I checked over the tank for any irregularities. I read the thermometer at 67 F (far below the 82 F we keep the tank at normally). I was hopeful that, since the thermometer is near our now weather strip-less door (we're having a heck of a time with everything temperature related now that winter decided to finally rear it's ugly head), that the thermometer was just acting funny (it's the simple stick on kind that came with the tank) but I did a touch test and recoiled immediately! Our heater decided it would stop working and we currently don't have the funds to buy a new one (rent, new car, etc.) and I was curious if any of my fish would be in danger. Currently we've been running our furnace at around 75 F which manages to keep an almost constant 69 F in the aquarium. Most of the fish we keep are fairly hardy and can tolerate this lower temperature for a week or two. We kept our clown loaches unheated last winter (still while in Rochester here) and they did fine. My question is, will my Rainbows (I have three, a Turquoise, Boesemani, and Irian Red), Spotted/Spiny Eel, or two Angels face any real threat in this time? Again, the tank is sitting at a constant 69 F and will only be in this state for at most two weeks. Thank you so much for your time and response! A: Tank temperatures usually stay about two degrees
cooler than your room temp due to evaporation. So, I'm
surprised your tank's at 69 degrees. I find clown loaches to
be among the most sensitive fishes to cool temps. Get your
tank temp back up to 82 as fast as possible. Put a lamp with a
100 watt light bulb underneath it. LA
Seth Kennedy, Rochester, MN, December 2, 2007
This is going to sound like a dumb question, but where exactly should I place this lamp? We have a tank stand that has a cabinet on either side (spanning about one-third the total length of the stand) and in the center is an open area with a shelf in the middle of the opening. Should I place the lamp on the top of that shelf even though it would be underneath a very thick piece of wood? Or would it just be better to move the clown loaches temporarily into our 10 Gallon heated quarantine tank? Now we've gotten the tank up to a solid 72 F. As I said before, we kept our Clowns in a 30 last winter unheated (sitting around 69-73 F at all times) and the only death we had in relation to cold is a small angel (purchased from Wal-Mart, so you tell me :P) that died the first day we had snow (I think it snowed around a foot in one night that day), but if this is going to be stressful rather than simply dangerous, then I will move the fish ASAP. Thanks again for all your help, let me say that I frequent your site more than any other fish related site when I need info immediately! Thanks, A: With wood underneath the tank, forget the lamp idea. Too much insulation. Probably best to just grit it out until you get your heater. LA
J. Chan, December 2, 2007
Do u have snakehead? If u do, how much are they? A: No one in the U.S. has had snakeheads for about two years now. Our government thinks we are too stupid or careless to own one. Sadly, they are probably right. LA
Calvin, December 3, 2007
You should try to keep interesting animals like sea urchins and starfish. A: Some young urchins should probably be
kept in cages. LA
Angel Sierra, Garland, TX, December 6, 2007
Hi I want to know if you have axolotls for sale, their price, availability and how can I order them. Thank you. A: Sorry, Angel, we have no axolotls at present. And, we do not ship critters. LA
John Roberts, Michigan, December 6, 2007
How do you sex blue johanni, Melanochromis johanni? Is there a difference in color or do you go by the eggs spots or what? Thanks for the help A: The two rules of thumb you mention work reasonably well -- at least 80% of the time. Females are lighter in color. Males have a few more egg spots on their anal fins. As with all heuristics, we're still up in the air the other 20% of the time. And all bets are off when they're small. LA

Hi I got 2, 6"iridescent sharks that I have kept for around 2 weeks now but their colors are getting darker and darker by the day. One of them completely lost its silver belly and side and is now completely black, even the eyeballs. Is this caused by stress? They haven't been eating either, only at night and I see them nibbling on pellets. And their swimming has slowed down quite a lot too. Do you know what is wrong? Is it stress from being transferred from one tank to a big new one? Will the black coloring go away and return to the silver "iridescence" once they get happy? A: Make sure they're warm enough and give them time to adjust. LA
Amy Cassidy, December 8, 2007
What African cichlids would you recommend that are reasonably priced, peaceful, and fairly easy to care for? A: Kribensis, butterfly cichlids, and most of the shell dwellers. LA
Mitchell Falcon, Marrero, LA, December 9, 2007
Hello. I came upon your website, and I saw the ground squirrels . I started to wonder if you ship them by plane. But then I saw you do not ship pets. So may you tell me were I can find Richardson's ground squirrels in Louisiana or near Louisiana. Thank you. Sincerely, A: I'm afraid I really can't help you. LA Timothy Keyser, Livonia, MI, December 9, 2007 I was just reading your article on Caecilian Worms
My
daughter acquired one about a month ago. It is about 10-12
inches long. It is very active but there are times when it
seems like it is about to die. It lies motionless on the
bottom of the tank and its head and other areas of its body
turns white. But then a few hours later it is off swimming
around perfectly normal. Any idea what's going on?
A: You are probably observing its shedding process. LA

Hi, I am trying to purchase two white doves or homing pigeons to release at my wedding in less than 3 weeks. Do you sell these birds??? Please email me. Thanks, A: We sell white doves but not for wedding releases. They'd last maybe an hour in our current weather. Here's a contact for you. LA Doves Over Des Moines Joey Holmes,
Vermillion, SD, December 10, 2007
A: We currently have bumblebees, knights, stippled red, and banded dragon gobies. Our main supplier also listed mogurnda sand, purple-spot, and sleeper gobies. However, we do not ship fish. LA
Joey Holmes,
Vermillion, SD, December 10, 2007
A: My main supplier operates in a Chicago suburb. You may be able to find more gobies in Chicago. LA
Jim Coursey,
Baltimore, MD, December 10, 2007
A: Corys are always good to add. They rarely overstock a tank. Rainbow sharks like to argue. Add more hiding places. Small iridescent sharks are a schooling fish and will stay uncomfortable as singles. They also tend to grow longer than your 10-gallon tank. I've never mixed dwarf puffers with rainbow sharks, so I can't comment on that mix. LA
