Ok, I need help identifying what is wrong with this angel.  PLEASE!
I know that it does not look serious, but trust me, if one gets these white spots.....more like bumps.........it will die.  It takes a while.....maybe two or three weeks.......
They are white knots.  Usually on the crown of the head.  I noticed this one just a few minutes ago want to rub up against a plant.
It does not run rampant by any means in the tank.  I noticed one other angel with one white dot on the top of its back while I was trying to photograph this one.  It is just the beginning for that one.  No other fish are affected in the tank!!!!!  Only the angels.  They will eat.  Then one day you notice it floating.  These are in the 180 gallon tank. It is just one by one that will die.  Not rampant but deadly to the one that gets the bump.
I have noticed that the bumps sometimes run along the lateral line above the eyes approximately.  I do not believe that it is ick.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

KP

A:  Most likely a parasite called hexamita, commonly called "hole-in-the-head disease."  The specific cure is metronidazole.  Treat at about double what most labels recommend.  It is usually fatal to discus.  Angels are known carriers.  LA

I've just got to have an eastern spotted newt!  Can you tell me when you can ship one to me?  Patient as always.

LA
Eastern (USA) spotted newt looking for a snack.

A:  Eastern newts always "disappear" during Florida's mosquito season.   Either mosquito spray also zaps newts and/or it eliminates their main food supply.  No matter the exact "why," I haven't seen newts on any wholesale lists lately.  Unfortunately, we do not ship.  LA

Hi there. I  love your website. I currently have an African mbuna tank. As you know, these fish are herbivores. I've been feeding them pellet food as well as Rod's Herbivore frozen blend and wow have they thrived! All of my females are holding, their colors are glowing and I have never seen them so active. Rod's foods are marketed for saltwater fish, but the ingredients are impeccable so I thought I'd try it out. Just wanted 2 give you my 2 cents since I know you sell a Lot of cichlids. Also wondering if you buy or take cichlid fry? I will be having fry from yellow labs, yellow finned acei, And P. elongatus soon. Thanks

A:  Yep.  We buy local fish (even cichlids).  We prefer them about 2 inches.  We'll take the smaller ones but we pay for the 2 inchers.  By the way, you will not get rich raising African cichlids.  Where'd you find the Rod's food?  LA

Nicolas Jones, Santa Barbara, January 2, 2012
Hi I have a questions about electric blue jack dempseys. I bought a small one that was about an inch long. As it grew, its body changed from the vibrant blue color to black. Its head and tail is still blue though. Do you know what might have caused this? Thanks!

LA

A:  Let's just say that EBDs have a very strange DNA setup.  I took genetics about two decades before they invented EBDs.  I cannot explain what happened.  LA

My convicts laid 150-200 eggs!!! They are in a 10 gal tank for raising their babies with a smaller female. Should I remove her??? Should I turn off their filter??? Thanks

A:  Leave the female in there.  I'm assuming you have an outside power filter.  Take the siphon out and put a sock over the intake.  Secure it with a rubber band.  Trim off the excess.  Replace the siphon.  LA

i need to know how to breed green tree frogs plez help i have a male and a female

LA

A:  I've never bred them myself because they reproduce in our neck of the woods all by themselves.  If you can replicate the local environment, you may pull it off.  (Of course, they do all the actual work.)
The spring thaw and spring rains seems to trigger their need to breed.  So, you need to give them a couple months of low rations followed by about the same period of very cold temperatures.  Your refrigerator may work for this part.  When the snow disappears outside, you can start gradually warming your frogs.  If he feels the urge, you'll hear him trilling at night.  If she feels the urge, she'll find him and cooperate in the amplexus.  LA
PS  Firebelly "toads" are probably easier.

I was wondering how much the chinchillas were.

A:  Sorry, I cannot remember the prices of all our stock.  I did notice that we had one chinchilla when I left for lunch.  Call 515 283-0300 for the exact price and color.  LA

To whom ever writes the caresheets on your website I just want to say I cant get enough of the funny comments they make when commenting on the animal or its photo. I read the sheet on the water monitors (been keeping reptiles for 30 years) and love the comments like Water monitors need bigger cages so not to bonk their beaks….beaks healed up and ready to be bonked again! I casualy read the other sheets as well, anoles etc…. reminds me of why I got into reptiles and how to enjoy them. Keep up the good articles and comments!
Now back to my 13 month old 4 foot water monitor that I sure would love to bonk his beak and he would mine!!!

LA
Just relaxing by the pool.

A:  I'm guilty on about 98% of the pages.  Now for the bad news:  Water monitors are now illegal in Iowa.  LA

David Smith, Augusta, GA, January 7, 2012
Hey Larry, Yeah I am starting to hear about some states starting to do that. I could see the niles because of all the publicity coming out of Florida. I live in Augusta Georgia which is right on the South Carolina border and the last reptile show I went to in SC I was told they outlawed them there as well.
Probably not a bad thing seeing how large they get and 99% of the people that get them end up getting rid of them. I have had several over the years and am guilty of that as well. I am committed to this one I got as a tiny baby last December and today pushing 4+foot. Not sure why I go back to them it is definitely not for the daily water changes, giant gashes in my arms from the claws, hefty food bills, and with an attitude to boot!
Attached are some pics of Stanley when I got him Dec 2010 and then another one taken in October2011. The one of me holding him you can see he is eyeing me and wanting to bonk beaks!

A:  I think they just lumped water monitors in with Niles because they look so similar.  I've only had two water monitors that weren't "friendly."  LA

Naim Abd Trabelsi, Tunisia, January 5, 2012
Salaam, My name is Naim Abd Trabelsi, younger brother of Leila Trabelsi, the wife of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, former Tunisian president who was ousted by Tunisians recently. I am presently under house arrest in my Town House in Tunis because of the perceived corruption of the President's family. I was not a member of the government but now suffering persecutions because I am a relative of the President's wife and anyone seen as related to the President's family is presently under arrest.
I have contacted you because I have initiated assylum proceedings and I need someone on the outside I can trust to handle this and other matters for me as I do not know how long I am going to have internet access and there is no one I could trust in Tunisia anymore. All my assets in Tunisia and Europe have been seized but I was able to move some assets to a security and finance holding company before my arrest.
I am willing to pay you a substantial amount of money for any assistance you render to me. I would appreciate any assistance you could render in this regard. Please indicate by return email if I can rely on you to keep this matter confidential. Regards,

A:  I can help you by providing information that will help you successfully keep most of your pets while under house arrest.  Unfortunately, you really can't rely on me to keep this confidential.  Hang in there.  LA

Kemraj Winzey, Trinidad, January 5, 2011
Hello Aqualand, I'm trying to contact Mr. Akash Varun who posted pictures of the Golden rams on your website.
Can you assist me by either forwarding my email to him or sending me his email address?
Thank you in advance,.Best Regards

A:  I rarely save email addresses.  The closest I can help is to say he's also from Trinidad.  LA

Kemraj Winzey, Trinidad, January 6, 2011
Thank you for your help.
Maybe you can assist me by identifying with the aid of pictures of the male and female of the various types of rams i.e electric blue, golden and german blue rams.
Additionally what do you feed the babies if you're incubating the eggs away from parents?

AV

A:  This photo from Askash Varun shows the best way to sex blue and gold rams.  They're all the same species.  Males sport that elongated second ray in their dorsal fin.  You can't tell on immature rams and (in my experience) we don't see very many female rams.  LA

Rolling Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas, January 6, 2011
Hi, I have an Abaco, Bahamas wildlife (and a lot else besides) site.
A while ago I did a short piece on curlytails.
I have recently had a couple of hits, and another one today, about their diet, such as 'do CTs eat tomatoes?'
Maybe it's a school project somewhere?
I googled that query and your site came up first...
I think it has answered the question: "maybe, but they'd far prefer apple sauce if selecting the vegetarian option"
However it occurred to me that your factoids box, and maybe some of your other general info, would be useful for people who reach my CT page
Could I possibly have permission to use the factoids box and a few other CT facts, with a credit and click through to your site? All the best.

LA
2.5-inch curly-tail lizard.  Hatched by one of our customers, Jason Collins.

A:  Sure.  Feel to borrow any of the charts or pictures.  LA

Getting a few Vieja maculicaudas today and wondered what diet you would recommend for them? I know that sometimes they can be picky eaters so I was hoping you might have some suggestions. Thanks!

A:  Like most cichlids, ours have always eaten whatever we fed.  Most of our fish get different foods on different days.  I'd think they'd eat any of the cichlid flakes or pellets.  I know they'd eat live California blackworms and frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms (if you can still find them).  LA

Paige, Ankeny, IA, January 8, 2011
I am looking for a new kitten, and I want to know the price for one.

A:  Because of our remodeling, etc., we have no room for kittens currently.  Kittens get fairly scarce from late December until March or April.  LA

Hello! I am working with children's author Sundee Frazer to update her website for the launch of a new book. She is hoping she might be able to use an image from your website on her own, specifically the Anole photo at the very bottom of this page: http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Lizard,%20Anole.htm
The image would appear on this page (on the left hand side, below the other two images): http://sundeefrazier.com/bb-sixth.php. We are happy to add copyright information to the image if you would like.
Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you!

A:  Sure.  You have my permission.  LA

dave, January 10, 2011
i woke up today and turned the light on to feed them and when i came back i noticed this? hes been kindof beatup lately, which i dont quite understand. hes the biggest fish in the tank and every altercation ive seen involving him ends with him putting the majority of the other fish in his mouth and then they leave him a lone.

D

A:  Mainly he looks like he has "popeye."  So he's probably weakened and unable to ward off his smaller but more aggressive tank mates.  Put him in a quarantine tank and try one of the furan drugs.  I'm not sure you can cure "popeye."  LA

dave, January 11, 2011
thats kindof what it looked like to me, but im no expert. i unforftunately dont have a tank available for quarantine. ill have to see what i can arrange. thanks.

A:  Use one of those ubiquitous white buckets.  Rinse it.  Add water from your tank and add an airstone.  LA

Ryan Skow, Des Moines, IA, December 10, 2011
Hi there!  I purchased 5 Black Ruby Barbs on January 3rd and one looks
like it has 'salt' or small bubbles on it.  I did a quick search online
and that sounds like the description of ICH.  All other fish in the tank
look good so far, but I am a bit concerned that it will spread.  I have
attached a photo of the fish.
Please let me know if that is the correct diagnosis and what treatment
to proceed with. Thanks,

LA

A:  Ich it is.  Usually a chill or other stressor gives it a jump start.  It is highly contagious and often fatal if not treated.  Happily, it's easy to cure.  Warm your tank to 80F and treat with any of the ich cures containing malachite green and formalin.  Follow the label directions.  Catch me before lunch and I'll give you the cure free (since I know you bought them from us).  LA

Ryan Skow, Des Moines, IA, December 11, 2011
Thank you for the reply.  I did end up stopping in last night and picked
up the "QuICK Cure" at the recommendation of Kathy.  I added the 1
drop/gallon (29 gallons) last night and the temp is at 78 degrees (she
didn't mention upping the temperature).
Unfortunately, this morning one of the platies we had as a 'starter
fish' was laying on its side at the bottom of the aquarium with its tail
shredded.  The other two platies are swimming oddly and their tails
don't look 'full' anymore either.  Although the three were acting a bit
strange before the medicine, but seemed fine last night.
So far the Barbs and Gouramis look and are acting normal (except the one
with ICH, but even that one is swimming around just fine).
Is the regular dosage of "QuICK Cure" too much for platies or is there
something else going on with them?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

A:  The warmer your tank, the faster ich parasites go thru their life cycle.  They are not vulnerable when encysted on the fish or when they fall to the bottom.  Each fallen cyst divides into 1,024 baby "tomites" which are vulnerable to the ich cures.  See What is Ich? for more details.  LA
