Let me first say, i just love your website. there is tons of info here and i usually resort here for my fish things. any ways. I just set up a 10 gallon tank with in the past month or so and im trying to find good tank mates. I have limited knowledge on larger tanks because all i have is a male betta in a 2.5 gallon tank. my ten gallon has a heater and a filter. so i have 3 speckled cory catfish which are doing fine but my 6 neon tetra stay at the bottom and ive had them for a week. since they stay at the bottom all my cory's eat the food and it doesnt seem like the neons get food. but they still have amazing colors and school together. there is one tetra that just swims and stops and he just floats around. im looking for what i could possibly do to help with my neons staying at the bottom and what other tank mates i could put in the tank. ive been searching for help and i just cant find any. maybe you could help. thanks,

A:   I wrote Which Fish Get Along?, especially for you.  It contains many heuristics (rules of thumb) to help you select the best fish for you.  Most local fish stores do this all day long.  LA

Jonathan Lee, January 22, 2012
thanks for the help. but one last thing. what is the reason for the neons being at the bottom  i was also not able to open your link.

A:  I'm sorry, but I have no idea why they prefer the bottom of your tank.  To go to the link, go to the Table of Contents page and look under Miscellaneous.  LA

How do these stocking plans sound?
55 gallon with eheim canister filter and UG filter
2 blood parrots
6 comet goldfish
1 common pleco
27 gallon hex with eheim canister filter
30 fancy guppies
1 angelfish
Thanks!

A:  No real problems but I'd move the comets to a bucket.  And I'd add lots more fish to the 55.  LA

August Force, January 25, 2012
Okay thanks. Do you think my local pet store would take the comets off my hands?

A:  Since the ESP app on my phone's a little low on go juice, I have absolutely no idea what they'll do.  They probably will.  LA

August Force, January 26, 2012
Very funny. Can I mix fancy goldfish and the blood parrots?

A:  You can.  It's a strange mix because their needs are so dissimilar.  I've never tried it.  Let me know how it works out.  LA

I am a science teacher at Dallas Center-Grimes CSD, and I recently purchased a few red mystery snails without realizing how prolific they are.  I have a 10 gallon tank and am looking at ways to keep them in control.  I read that loaches are natural predators of the snails and am considering adding a few to my tank.  I'm sure clown loaches will get far too large for my small aquarium, so I'm considering dwarf loaches.  Would these still eat the snails (most are currently the size of a pencil eraser or smaller)?  Do you carry dwarf loaches and how much are they? Thanks!

LA
Foolproof snail riddance method.

A:  I've never heard of a red mystery snail.  Mystery snails lay their eggs above the water level.  If you keep their tank full to the brim, they cannot breed.  Dwarf loaches are incredibly nasty for their size.  They will pester African cichlids.  They're really cheap but we no longer sell them.  LA

Is your plakat Thai top grade breed fighter from Thailand? If so. When is the next time you will get new one in?

A:  We no longer import the trained fighters from Thailand.  We sell the regular roundtails and the "giant" rountails.  Both are untrained.  If you plan to fight them, you need to train them yourself.  LA

Hi I got a bearded dragon, and I moved home from college and my mom and dad dont like him. I haven't had him that long but he never bites and is fun to watch. But since I was told he needs a new home I was wondering if you would buy him? and how much you would pay for him? Thanks

A:  Probably.  Bring him in Friday or Saturday and Mike will likely make you an offer.  LA

Kendall Vankooten, Iowa, January 26, 2012
I live a hour away. So could we come up with a rough price?  I have about $300 in him and the tank. So I would like that out of him. But a offer is ok too thanks

A:  Here's the sad news.  You will never get as much out of him as you paid.  Worse yet, we cannot buy your equipment because we have no place to put it.  Mike might make you an offer over the phone, but I really doubt it.  It's hard to make an estimate on an unseen lizard.  LA

I have a 55 gallon brackish tank (1.010) with 3 Green Spotted Puffers and 5 Figure 8 Puffers. They are all still juveniles at 2-3 inches.  I read sites that say they will get along in groups and sites that say not to do more than one in a tank. I really like them and they are thriving and getting a long so far but wondered if you have seen/heard of groups like this that are able to cohabitate long term. Thanks for your help.

A:  Puffers get along pretty good in groups if you keep them well fed.  With goldfish not so much.  LA

I want to say great site site, me and my girlfriend love it. i find the fish information very helpful and Knowlegdeable.
anyways, i have a simple question, if possible, would you guys be able to do a Sailfin lizard page? i am not sure if i missed your page if there is currently one, or if you guys have it hidden, but i have developed a fascination with these strange and beautiful creatures, and was wondering if you guys could not just give me info, but make it avalible to all viewers of your great site?

A:  No can do.  I've never kept sailfin lizards.  LA

Hi, I was just wondering if you have seen and know how to treat rosy red that have a  weird black spots on them? They don't look like the typical black spot disease. They are larger, the size of a pepper flake or a bit bigger, and are slightly raised. We had the group of rosy reds for a few  weeks or so and these spots just started appearing on them last week. One fish has two, and the other 5 or 6. The spots look as if they are embedded in the flesh. They are circular or slight oval in appearance. I don't think they are lice.
There's a picture here, if you can scroll down. (These are not mine) http://www.wetwebmedia.com/fwsubwebindex/flukesfwf.htm
It looks very similar to what my rosy reds have. We got a mystery snail along with the rosy reds, and I have a fantail goldfish. We were going to house them together but now I don't want to if this is some kind of disease that needs treatment.
I don't know if you can help us out, but I love your website and thought that you might have encountered this kind of thing before. If you can drop me a line, I would so appreciate it! Thanks,

A:  I can't tell diddly from the photo.  If you think the black spots are external parasites, try one of the parasite or protozoan cures.  I can't give you a specific name because I don't know what's available in your area (and many products have been taken off the market due to changes in regulations).  LA
PS:  I think of rosy reds as mainly a live food for larger fish or as crappie bait.  We go thru about 300 a week.  I can't say I've ever encountered a rosy red disease.

I have had a male cockatiel for about 5 months.   I have just introduced a female into his cage and the male continually bites at the top head feathers.   What can I do to stop this or is this normal?   Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and regards

A:  Probably the easiest solution is to use a product called Bitter Apple (or one of its equivalents).  Cover her eyes and spray her head.  The other way is to use negative reinforcement.  Every time he starts picking at her head, squirt him with a jet of water.  You may want to use a combination of "treatments."  LA

Leon Crossan, January 31, 2012
Thank you for your prompt reply.   I have one more question - my male cockatiel who was very friendly until I put the female into his cage, has now  become very aggressive.   What could be the reason for this?   Thank you for your assistance. Kind regards

A:  Now we're getting into bird psychology.  Your bird was once the focus of your attention and vice versa.  Introducing the female changed the equation.  He now realize he's a bird -- a male bird who was formerly not sharing his quarters with another bird -- and is expressing his displeasure in an aggressive manner.  I'm assuming you mean he's now aggressive to you in addition to the new female.  She'll be better off if she gets her own cage right next door to him.  Eventually, he'll come around.  B

Just thought an X-ray of a Blood Red Parrot may be an interesting addition to the BR Parrot page. She was a 2 year old female that passed away. Used her for my radiology class -- good to see the internal make-up of these hybrids.

A:  You bet.  Send me an attachment.  LA
