Hi, I was wondering if you ship to Birmingham Alabama? Specifically, I would like to purchase Java Moss, 2 Algae-eatting Shrimp, and a fruit fly culture (wingless if you have them). At the very least I would like the java moss and shrimp. And at the very very least, the Java moss. Can you ship these 3 items to Birmingham and what would be the cost of the shipping and the cost of each item? Thanks!

A:  We're not really a website seller.  We don't ship fish or critters.  I will ship you the Java moss.  LA

I was looking through our web page and liked the pics and wanted to share with you a pic of my green severum. Please let me know what you think of it. Thanks for your time

A:  Nice looking young male.  LA

I own an approx. 600 gallon backyard pond, and I wish to stock it with several catfish (either bullheads or channel).  I have tried to catch some from local ponds and creeks, but I have had no luck.  Do you know of any sources or people who would be willing to ship me about 4 of them for a resonable price?  If so tell me.

A:  We sell regular and albino channel carfish, so I would think your local fish store could get them for you.  They run in the $6 to $12 range depending upon size and season.  LA

Toni Oliver, Iowa, July 5, 2009
We live a little over 100 miles from your Des Moines store. We were
wondering if the store is open? If it is, do you have or could get a
pixie or a pac man frog tadpole? We would be able to come to the Des
Moines store to pick it up. Do you have pixie frogs on hand? We hate
to drive 100 miles for nothing. Thanks.

A:  I can't remember ever seeing tadpoles of Pac Man or Pyxie frogs.  We do have Pac Mans in stock, also a Budgetts, some chubbies, an Australian dumpy, and about four other kinds.  Give us a call at 515 283-0300 about the Pyxie frog.  I'm at home, the frogs are at Aqualand.  LA

Hello. If water turtles mostly need water and box turtles mostly need land, would it be okay to keep a red-ear slider and a three-toed box turlte in the same tank? I already know they're going to need a lot of space to chill because they are both full grown. And one side of the tank should be heated correct? And if I'm right the slider is going to need at least six inches of water in a half & half tank right?

A:  Theoretically it should work.  LA

Joanna Eppler, July 5, 2009
Please, please, please update your hermit crab page! It has been found that hermit crabs do NOT like to live in a tank that has water standing in it, and gravel is NOT a good substrate. How are they supposed to dig down to go molt? They need sand or a dirt like substrate (like coconut coir, or Eco Earth) so they can bury themselves to molt safely. When crabs surface molt, they are extremely vulnerable to being scavenged by other hermit crabs. Their shed exo gives off a smell (as does their new exo) that is extremely attractive so they will be sure to eat it to regain their strength. Unfortunately, if they surface molt, this leaves all other crabs around them able to smell the hormone and attack the crab or eat the crab's exo that they need to regain their strength.
Please, there has been a lot of information discovered just in the past couple of years about the care of hermit crabs, and having them in standing water in a tank (even with things to climb on) has been determined is actually a very unhealthy environment for them.
There are websites that have dedicated members who have done much to research and compile evidence and information about land hermit crabs and their care in captivity, but unfortunately the spread of information is slow. There is good, reliable information out there now, from people who have had their crabs upwards of 10 to 30 years.
Please visit these websites to see new and updated information on the proper care of hermit crabs:
http://www.hermitcrabparadise.com/crabcare
http://crabstreetjournal.com/xoops/modules/news/article.php?storyid=136
I look forward to visiting your updated website in the future.
Thank you,

Raymond Mondo, July 7, 2009
Hi LA! Nice meeting you again! Um listen, this may sound weird, but my platies won't mate! Seriously...
Truth is there has been a disease outbreak. Some of the platies died, but right now they're all healthy (I've treated them).
And as proof of their health, they've been doing fine, eating greedily as usual, interacting with each other, keeping close together, etc etc.
Currently there's 5 females and 1 male. I thought he'd like a harem?
What do you think is the problem???
One of my friends suggested that they like hard water. But I don't understand what hard water is and how to make that...
I tried learning through internet but too hard to understand...
Thanks for helping! :)

A1:  Your average female platy has a litter every six weeks.  Then, she tries to eat them.  With a group of six, your babies all get eaten before you see them.  Add lots of fine leaved plants like hornwort for the babies to hide in.  Then, keep them well fed.  Add some snails to clean up the extra rations.
A2:  Hard water is water with dissolved solids in it.  Add a teaspoon of salt per gallon.

Raymond Mondo, July 8, 2009
Hey thanks for the reply... but I think I forgot to tell you my tank is densely planted, with anacharis, vallisnerias, etc etc...
So the problem is not adults eating the fry, it's that I don't see the male chasing the female around and mating, and none of the females are pregnant...
Is it ok to add salt? I heard most aquatic plants can't handle salt and will die. Thanks! :)

A:
Many plants will take up to a teaspoon of salt per gallon.
Sounds like you need a new male.  LA

To whom it may concern: I have just stumbled upon your web site and found it absolutely wonderful! However I am now overwhelmed and was wondering if I could get some help! I live in North Pole, Alaska and finding  knowledgeable people willing to help is far and few between and that is why I am reaching out for help.  I have a 40 gal fresh water and after a bout of ich I have managed to gain a lot of knowledge of taking care of fish and I hope because of that I haven't killed a fish in 2 1/2 months!!!  I decided to go and add two more fish to the tank and now I have 8 fish in my tank, one of which is an African Knife Fish. I bought it because I though it looked nice, but after reading your website it says it would help to have live plants.  I was looking for a good resource for someone beginning with live plants and where I should start?
Thank you for any help you will provide and I have already bookmarked this site!

Hello! My boyfriend and I have a 36 gallon tank with 2 algae eaters, 1 pictus catfish, 1 kissing gourami, 1 gold gourami, and 1 blood parrot. Other than this, most likely, being not the best of mixes (we're about to get 1 or so more pictus). We want to get an African dwarf frog as well. Is you already know, all the fish are semi-aggressive. is this a really bad idea?
Thank you so much for your time! Sincerely and with gratitude,
Ashley & Rob

LA

A:  African dwarf frogs are slow to find their food.  Pictus will eat it almost instantly.  Your frog will starve.  LA

Can an adult golden gecko live with a younger and smaller golden gecko?

LA
Gecko, Golden

A:  As a general rule, big lizards eat little lizards.  At the very least, little lizards feel threatened by larger lizards.  Usually you want to reduce stress as much as possible.  Much depends on the difference in size.  LA

I set up a Facebook profile where I can post my pictures, videos and events and I want to add you as a friend so you can see them. First, you need to join Facebook! Once you join, you can also create your own profile. Thanks,

A:  I can't join Facebook, Twitter, or any of those love clubs.  I get way too much input as it is.  LA

Hi, I am the owner of Kolton's Aquarium, and my members have been asking me for care sheets and some articles for my site and I don't have time to write many of them, so I was wondering if I could use some of the care sheets off of your site.  I can add you to our sponsored sites page and have your site at the bottom on the article or whatever you would like.
Please email me back if you give me permission to use the articles.
Best Regards,

A:  Sure.  Just add our website address at the bottom.  LA

What kind of Human Foods I can give to a Frog ? Please help. Thank you.

A:  African clawed frogs will eat some types of human foods.  However, most frogs will eat only moving insects or other small creatures such as spiders or worms.  LA

I recently acquired two mud puppies.  One has started to lose its "mane" .  Is it time to move him to a tank with just a pool?

A:  In the Midwest, we call waterdogs "mud puppies."  You can see the difference here.
