I'm starting a new 26 gallon tank and have been reading about sand vs.
gravel.  I've never thought of using sand and no pet store here seems to
have an opinion.  What's best and easiest to care for ... I'm a busy
person without a ton of time for care. - Thank you

A:  Most saltwater keepers prefer sand because they usually grow no plants and use high external filtration.  You can't use sand with an under gravel filter because it falls thru.
Most smaller tank freshwater fish keepers use gravel with under gravel filters.  Larger tank keepers use strong outside filtration.
Planted tank fans use a natural colored b-b size gravel.
On larger tanks I prefer gravel with two filter systems -- UG and outside supplemental filtration.
I'd use gravel rather than sand because it stays cleaner looking longer.  Expect to spend about 20 minutes per week cleaning your tank and changing 20% of the water.  LA

Hi!  I wonder if you could talk to Mike about the possibility of him finding me some Iowa land snails in the area.  Just ask him if it's possible for him to find me about four of them.  I want to know.  Thanks.

A:  Mike said he's going to Council Bluffs for a few days.  When he returns, he said he will look for them (early in the morning before the sun dries things out).  LA

I wentto my brother's wedding and was gone for a week and a half. I thought
that my husband was going to take the kids to Des Moines to get frogs. He decided that he didn't want to make the trip. Do you still have pixie frogs? How much are they? Also my other son has two dumpy tree frogs and is interested in mozambique reed frogs. Could dumpys and mozambiques be kept together in a 30 gal tank or will they eat each other? Do you have mozambiques in stock? How much are they? Thanks, hope to be coming your way soon.

A:  We have no pyxies or mozambiques in stock.  Dumpies would eat the smaller mozambiques.  We have the following amphibians in stock
Frogs:  dumpy, chubby, grey tree, green tree, green pac man, albino pac man, Budgetts, generic tadpoles, grey tree tadpoles.
Toads:  spadefoot, American, Egyptian, red-belly.
Newts:  fire-belly, roughback, paddletail.
Salamanders:  tiger.  LA

You seem to know a lot about sunfish. I could use your help. Can you please tell me what I caught and now have living in my 75 gallon back yard tank.  I have attached 2 pictures, one from out of water, and one of it in a tank.  It's easily the largest sunfish I have ever caught and a possible tournament fish.  I know it isn't a pumpkin seed. It has the mouth of a small mouth bass and the appetite, but the shape and colors more similar to that of a sunfish. It's at least 10 inches long, at least 3 lbs.  I live in Rochester, NY, where a sunfish this big is unheard of.

AZ

NY
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

A:  Looks like you have a Lepomis auritus, which NY calls a redbreast sunfish.  Some places call these longears.  You do have a possible tournament size because they put it at 4 to 8 inches.  However, sunfishes often hybridize.  But check with your state conservation people and see if you have a record.  LA

Okay, I didn’t research the fish before I bought two male comb tail gouramis.  In a few hours, they killed three of my fish.  I only had eight fish in my 20 gallon tank to begin with (five being those little danios).  Is there a compatibility chart that can tell me what fish can safely exist with the paradise fish?

A:  Such a chart would be difficult to construct.  Compatability changes with the size of the tank and size of the fish.  And territorial disputes usually increase during the breeding season.  LA

Sean, Australia, July 25, 2009
Hello I have a 60 litre aquarium with 2 Bolivian rams and a bristle nose catfish and I am thinking about getting a bigger sized tank. If I do, I was wondering if red tailed black sharks are compatible with these fish.

A:  They are sort of compatible -- at least while the shark is small.  However, the shark will grow to three times the size of rams.  He will start pestering them long before he attains full size.  LA

Jordan Royal, July 25, 2009
Hi, I'm getting a red tail boa, and I know everything about them. But I hear a lot of people saying that they're really just boa constrictors at the pet stores, and real red tail boas are not as docile. How do I know if the one at the pet store is a true red tail boa?

A:  Ah, another Zen question.  First, how do we know that the boas they said were less docile were true red-tail boas?  Most constrictors are fairly docile when kept well fed.  Boa constrictors are mellower than many of the constrictors.  Redtails don't grow as large as some of the constrictors, but realize that you may be buying a snake that will out grow you.  Frequent handling helps.  Don't feed him in his home cage.  Wash your hands after handling his food.  LA

Is it safe to have an Iguana and a bearded dragon together in the same large tank? He is already housed with a young box turtle, they seem to not bother each other.

A:  Safe?  Probably.  They all have similar needs.  However, they would likely fare much better if housed separately.  LA

Hi! I really just wanted to tell you.....your web site is phenomenal!!! I recently rescued what I believe is a house gecko from a shipment of Boston ferns that came into the grocery store I work in. I have struggled for weeks to make him/her as comfy as possible as it is very scared. Your web site is the FIRST of many that has been informative and easy to understand. I wanted to thank you for your time involved. Really. You've truly guided the clueless. Thank you again!!

A:  You're welcome.  LA

Dear Aqualand pets I have been searching for a place that would ship a
live patriot crab to me. I have done a lot of research on them and am
continuing to research them. Thank you.

A:  Sounds like you're looking for an-on-line source for patriot crabs.  First, check your local (non-chain) fish store.  If they can't get them, google "patriot crabs for sale" (without the quote marks).  You will get exactly 299,000 hits.  Somewhere in that whole megillah you shall find the source you seek.  LA

Neat Moran, Australia, July 26, 2009
Hello, This email is concerning one of my Dumpy Tree Frogs and I was wondering if you may be able to give me some advice?
One of my Dumpy Tree Frogs is sick, I think. It is 41/2 months old and we have a very good, clean, basic tank setup including bark and rock which we only clean with water. For the past week my Dumpy Tree Frog has been very lethargic, won’t eat even if we dangle food in front of its face, is burrowing and will not move at all. It is still alive and we’ve made sure that there are no signs of red leg. The legs and stomach are not swollen either. The stomach is a good/normal colour. We hardly pick it up unless we need to transfer when cleaning and if we decide to pick it up we always make sure to wash our hands thoroughly with water.
I’m finding this very unusual seeing as this was the frog that always jumped around and would always go for food. I’m very concerned!
Thank you for reading and I hope you get back to me!
 Kind regards,

LA

A:  Well, I'm answering but can't put my finger on anything specific.  The only thing that comes to mind is he may have swallowed a piece of gravel.  Frogs eat enthusiastically and thus occasionally ingest matter they weren't really aiming at.  Usually it passes thru. But while it's in there, it makes him very uncomfortable.  LA

RE Red Cherry Shrimp
You made some mistakes in their description.

The first mistake is that in the article it says, that they come from Taiwan, this is false, because they do not occur naturally anywhere. They were bred from the Neocaridina heteropoda shrimp. The second is that you have written the larvae are like brine shrimp, this is false. Because there is no planktonic larval stage, but the new shrimp that hatch are miniature copies of the adults. And you have also written that you shouldn't keep the young shrimp with adults. This is false because all shrimp that come from the family Neocaridina can live with young shrimp. They won't attack or eat them. And you have also written that it prefers water with salt. In my experience they do not need salt, not for breeding and not for living. You should also write the names of the fish that are suitable for living with these shrimp. These are white clouds, all Otocinclus, mini rasboras and Celestichthys margaritatus. These fish won't bother shrimp and will not eat or won't eat much of the larvae (if you have a planted aquarium).

LA

A:  Perhaps they didn't originally come from Taiwan.  That's where mine came from.  I didn't say they were like brine shrimp, I said the babies were about the size of baby brine shrimp.  Perhaps they don't eat the babies.  Other good mixers are the pygmy gouramis  and bristlenose plecos.  Thanks for your input.  I added it to my page.  LA

Calvin Kwok, New York City, NY,  July 28 2009
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there going to be a ban on all pets before. I'm guessing it got cancelled. The only ban that worked was the turtle under 4-inches ban which if you ask me was useless except for killing innocent baby turtles. Now they're trying to ban pythons? Wow someone must hate pets.

A:  There are bills that come up from time to time banning several pets.  The one you're thinking of wanted to ban ALL non-native species with a few exceptions.  It was still in the discussion stage.  Lots of bans exist today.  Here in Des Moines, we have a l-o-o-n-g list of various banned critters and fish.  And Iowa has banned all snakes over six feet.  That's your various governments at work trying to protect you.  Some of it makes sense.  Some of it is based on ignorance -- like many of their other laws and regulations..  LA

Wendy Parish, FCBA.org, July 29, 2009
It seems that you are very misinformed about betta housing.  I’ve been keeping bettas for years and have never kept one in anything less than a 2.5 gallon tank.  I also use 5 gallon tanks and I also house bettas in my large community tanks.  They are not “scared” in larger containers – they swim about all day exploring and patrolling their homes.  Why on earth would anyone think it’s OK to keep a living creature is such small accommodations as what you advocate?  That is no different than puppy mills keeping dogs in small crates their entire lives.   I’m really disappointed with the info you are giving out – I wish there was a way for me to have your website shut down!

A:  I'm fairly well informed about betta housing.  Are you writing your criticisms on company time?  LA

Wendy Parish, FCBA.org, July 29, 2009
I emailed you during my break.  However, I don't see what that has to do with the topic of betta housing.  If you're going to respond to my email please stay on topic.

A:  Speaking of off topic, bettas are not puppies.  I am not recommending that you or anyone else keep your bettas in small containers.  You can use whatever size you want.  I reported on real life -- not some imaginary world where every betta lives in a 2.5-gallon tank.  Why not a 50-foot bong in Thailand?  What entitles you to keep your bettas in captivity?  Anyway, you're entitled to your own provincial opinion.  LA
PS
I'll probably keep my website.

Jennipher Nielsen, July 29, 2009
Hi- We are currently looking for a pet for our home. We checked out your website, but have a question. Do you have all the creatures you have listed at your store? Thank you for your time

A:  No.  Some of the creatures such as snakeheads are no longer even legal in the U.S.  No one could possibly house all of the creatures and fish I've photographed over the years.  Anyway, it's a moot point since we do not ship critters at all.  LA

Richard Blando, Vancouver, BC, July 29, 2009
Do you still sell sun catfish or where can I find some that can be shipped to Vancouver?

A:  We occasionally sell sun catfish, but I don't know where you could buy ones that could be shipped to Canada.  Check our sun catfish page.  See if there are sun catfish ads on it.  There's no way for me to know what ads appear on the Canadian version of my website.  LA

I would like to order Tadpoles.

LA
Several tadpoles that came in with the feeder goldfish.

A:  We have four types of tadpoles in stock today, but we do not ship fish or critters.  LA

Jonathan Abreu, August 1, 2009
Can you please tell me the species???

A:  Most tadpoles look so much alike that I can only tell species on about a half dozen or so (none of which are the ones we currently have).  LA

Mo, Kansas, July 30, 2009
Hey! I live in Kansas and I am looking for a male horny toad! Could you tell me how much it will be and how I will get it! Thanks!

LA

A:  We stopped selling horned lixards because of their threatened condition in the wild.  Also, they are hard to keep because of their dependence upon harvester ants.  Anyway, we do not ship critters or fish.  LA

Dane Hays, West Des Moines, IA, July 31, 2009
DO YOU SELL ECO SPHERES? THE CONTAINED ECO SYSTEM THAT USUALLY HAVE SHRIMP OR SEA MONKEYS IN THEM? THANKS

A:  No.  LA

Timothy Graper, Spokane, WA, July 31, 2009
Good afternoon. Do you guys ship stuff or are you just a pet store that is in LA? I live in Spokane, WA. I have always been into pets but am in the military and lived in England for a couple years so had to take a break. I am just now starting to revamp my collection of animals (bought 9 in the past 3 weeks). If you guys ship stuff, where would I go to look at what you have to offer. Right now my primary interests are in frogs and lizards. When I get back from my deployment early next year though, I am going to get a lot more variety. Please any information will be great. Thank you. Respectfully,

A:  We're not in LA (my initials).  We're in Des Moines, Iowa.  We do not ship stuff.  LA
