We don't ship critters or live fish.

Hi, Mr. Larry. I couldn't help but notice that the fry on your P. denisonii page seems uncannily like a fry of that of a Pseudomugil sp. The main backing for my claim would be the dorsal fin, look at it, they look nothing like that of a denison's barb's dorsal fin, instead they look mighty like a rainbowfish fry. The body shape also does not conform, but my main concern really is the dorsal fin. Sorry to be such a fussy person, just want to help you.
A: You could be right. I don't know.
I've removed him from his 29-gallon tank and re-homed him in a
3.5-gallon tank for observation. I look at him every day but
I've never seen an inch-long roseline shark before. Only time
will tell. LA
A: This particular attempt was in a heavily planted 29. My next attempt will use a 20H stuffed with vegetation. I'm conditioning the potential breeders in their own individual 10-gallon tanks. I'll put them together in November. LA

THANKS LARRY AND THANKS FOR YOUR QUICK RESPONSE. JUST ANOTHER REASON WHY I MISS YOU GUYS. BELIEVE IT OR NOT THERE ARE NO STORES IN CHICAGO THAT COMPARE TO AQUALAND! A: I get lots of my fish from two wholesalers in Chicago. Check the local fish clubs to see which shops they recommend. There are undoubtedly lots of good fish stores there. I've been in several but too long ago to think they're still the same. LA

could i keep a hog chocker in a 5 ft. pond? thank you for your time
A: If by hog choker you meant the freshwater flounder, I'd say yes -- unless your pond freezes to the bottom. LA

Hi, Do you have any shovelnose catfish for sale? if so how much would one be? A: While I was changing the water today, I saw one nearly 3-inch tiger shovelnose and one 6-inch tiger shovelnose X redtail catfish hybrid. I can't remember prices. Call 283-0300 and ask. LA

Hi, I still haven’t got any African cichlids yet because I can’t find a 20 to 30 gallon fish tank for the fish I have, (barbs, tetras, catfish, ex.). I still have my channel catfish one got eaten by the crayfish but I still have 4. You are the most reliable person I have found to contact about animals, I’ve asked other people stuff and usually they don’t email back or give a very vague answer. Anyway to my question, how many African cichlids would you suggest for a 35 gallon tank? I know your site says 30 as a minimum, but 55 and up is better, but around here fish tanks cost a lot new and are hard to find used. So I can’t buy a bigger tank. (without giving an arm and a leg) I have to use the 35 gallon tank.
A: They give you vague answers because not all
African cichlids are alike in size and temperament (especially when
spawning). And males are even more unpredictable. Your
best bet is to work with your local fish store (and what's available
locally). The bigger the tank you keep them in and the more
riprap you provide, the less likely they are to beat the crap out if
each other. LA

Saw this pic on your website under the Aquatic plant Hygrophila LA
Could you tell me what tall plant that is on the right side
of the aquarium behind the rock?
A: Jungle val, Vallisneria americana. LA Don Davis, Lubbock, TX, October 24, 2011 A: Turtles are not known for their rock-climbing skills. Heat rocks have fallen out of favor with lizard (which are great rock climbers) keepers because lizards defecate on them which can cause bacterial problems. Iguanas love heat and will spend hours on a hot rock. If you want to warm up a turtle, a basking light works better. Depending on your room temp, lots of U.S. turtles need no extra heat. Some tortoises do much better at higher temps. I don't use heat rocks for any of my captive turtles (and I can get them wholesale). LA

1 south American leaf fishhey how does this tank sound 1 but-is but is 1 African butterfly fish and 3 dwarf Cory's please help
A: Your Butis butis will eat your dwarf corys and eventually kill your leaf fish and butterfly fish. LA
A: Keep doing exactly what your vet recommended. You could also add crickets to his menu. LA

I found that I could temporarily keep my breeding pair of convicts with a larger kissing gourami and a green spotted puffer!!! They focus on squabbling with each other and keep the puffer from taking chunks out of my kisser!!!
A: Not a good
mix. LA

Are you ever going to get any Peruvians, texels, or any long
haired guinea pigs in? If so when, I would really love to have
one. thanksA: Because of our renovation process we have no plans to expand our guinea pig stock. Maybe sometime in the spring? LA

Hello Larry, I emailed you last month regarding my pet crabs. Thanks again for your previous help. I have a new inquiry. I live in Chicago but am going to go home to California for about two weeks. I was thinking about leaving in one of those sinking fish food pellets to let them eat at their own pace, but I do not know if there is a better option. I have two fiddlers in a dry/wet aquarium and one rainbow/patriot crab also in a dry/wet aquarium. What does your crab wisdom suggest? Thanks,
Also, what kind of fish do you suggest as food for crabs?
How do you 'serve' them?
A: I would leave them a pelleted crab food way above their water level but still reachable. Most foods work fine until they get wet and start spoiling. The kind of fish I always feed the patriots is dead fish (when you have several tanks of feeder fish, some always expire overnight.) I've never fed the fiddlers a fish. Ant oy the hermit crab foods are easier. LA
