Reiman Gardens on the
Iowa State University campus germinated in 1993 when Roy and Bobbi Reiman
donated the funds to move the ISU horticultural gardens to their current
site. Some 14 acres comprise the entire package -- 11 individual
gardens and six water gardens. These photos will give you an idea of
their butterfly garden.

Several trays of chrysali can be observed before entering the sanctum sanctorum.
LA

No touching the bugs or the plants.
LA
Pic
You also have to watch where you walk. No bug squishing at all.
LA

Butterflies live only two weeks.
LA

Some butterflies put their spare time into continuing the species.

You can find your favorite color (or colors).
LA

Even good, old black and white looks good.
LA

And black and white comes in many sizes.
LA

Flowers provide only a fraction of their food.
LA
Pic
So Reiman Gardens provides several of these feeding stations.
LA
Pic
Still, you can't beat good, old natural nectar.
LA
Pic
Something about flower juice pulls them in.
LA
Pic
Very intriguing patterns on all these guys.
LA
Pic
Black and white again -- very in this year.
LA
Pic
Just a few flecks of color.

A small pond serves as an additional water source. More Reiman
Garden Ponds.
LA
Pic
Black and white still looks good.
LA
Pic
Quarter-inch mesh keeps them in.
LA
Pic
Lots of this species flitted about.
LA
Pic
Note missing left swallowtail on this guy. Their wings wear out fast.
LA
Pic
This guy still has his full set of wings.
LA
Pic
Never could get these guys to open up and show the "owl face" on their
wings.
LA
Pic
Another visitor sucking syrup at a feeding station.
LA
Pic
Little bitty guys flitted about also.
LA

Lewis Carroll insists these are really "flutterbies."
