LA
Part of our advance word.
Getting the Word Out. We
disseminated our contest info in various ways:
1. We posted our Tarantula Contest flier on our tarantula cabinet --
the place most tarantula keepers visit when they drop in to pick up their
crickets. And we put it on our bulletin board.
2. We tried to post the top announcement on our web site (which was
non-uploadable the five weeks before our contest).
3. We mailed our contest fliers to all 2008 purchasers of tarantulas.
4. We faxed our flier to the various media.

Some of the early entries.
LA
Here's a neat way to show tarantulas -- easy to carry also.
Different Tarantula Habitat.
These are jewelry boxes from the dreaded Wal-Mart. Easy to carry
and lockable to keep the kids out (if anything can).
LA
The Gaines family brought four tarantulas in these jewelry boxes.
Display Problem. Each of these
boxes contained a model car. Each spider in there considered
themselves "Speed Racer" and wedged themselves out of sight.
LA
Here's an entry set up to provide tarantula information.
LA
George Goeldner discussing his entry with the judge and his son.
Our Judge. We deliberately chose
a non-tarantula expert judge -- Andy Bognano from KJJY FM. We
needed someone to judge them on the general aspects that the regular
public goes by.
LA
"Sheds" in good condition make excellent displays.
LA
You can see the entire growth history of this red leg brought by Tim
Waterbury.
LA
Kritter Keepers were more standard tarantula homes.
LA
And just in case you think only guys keep tarantulas, Sue Warner keeps
them also.
LA
She's happy to display her Mexican red leg.
LA
Prizes for our entrants.
Lotsa Door prizes. Two, count
them, two shopping carts full of prizes -- T-shirts, tarantula
substrate, and cholla wood. Donors included:
● All-Glass Aquariums
● Carib Sea/Blue Iguana
● Aqua Accessories
● Aqualand Pets Plus
● Zilla
● Tetra
● Marineland
LA
Sue Warner also entered a Brazilian white knee.
LA
Here's another Mexican red leg whose owner won five prizes but who ran
off with her entry form.
LA
We don't recognize the spider but we recognize one ticked off tarantula.
LA
Tim Waterbury's Indian ornamental was friendlier but not really
friendly.
LA
Bud Warner's Costa Rican Zebra.
LA
Kenny Gaines Rio Grande gold.
LA
Mike in the middle bloviating about who won what prizes.
LA
Rick in the middle discussing tarantulas. Shy Shayleen in front hiding
from the camera.
LA
Towards the end.
LA
More talking.
LA
Kenny Gaines' curly bids you farewell.
Wrap up.. Not bad for our first
tarantula competition. Our tarantula club has only met twice. We
have a basic list of tarantula keepers to work with. The show will be
bigger next year. LA
