LA
6.5-inch female which spawned with male below.
LA
8-inch male which spawned with above female. Nice violet sheen.
LA
9-inch male traded in at same time.
LA
6-incher.
Comments:
These next jaguar cichlids came in as mediums -- three to four inches
long. We put them in a 55 with some other cichlids and watched them
get ragged fins as time passed. Rather than letting the jaguars pass
also, we moved them all to individual 10-gallon tanks. Shy,
retiring, and ragged at first, they grew into nice specimens. They’re about eight feet in the air -- a couple rows above our feeder
goldfish. In the mornings, any deceased or obviously weak feeders
get flipped up into their tanks. When hungry, the jaguars come to the front
and wiggle their butts with their faces against the front glass. Of
course, we sold some as time passed. We still have nine. The
shyer, smaller jags are probably females.
More Comments:
Cropping makes all these fish look the same size. They actually vary
a great deal. The males have more of the violet sheen. We shot
these all 01.20.04.
LA
Shy female 4.5-inches long. We couldn't get her to display.
LA
We flipped this "guy" a goldfish before starting. Both
sexes have red eyes.
LA
Males seem to come forward and display better.
LA
Except this guy who went clear to the back.
LA
At six inches, this male looks quite capable of breeding. Really
exceptional fins.
LA
Probable six-inch male. Not as colorful. Fins just okay.
LA
Five-inch probable male showing off.
LA
Six-inch male ready to rumble. Prettier.
LA
This four-inch female is a real shrinking violet with a light violet
sheen.
LA
All jaguars "open up" at meal time. They also perk up.
Worth Mentioning:
You will notice that jaguars often swallow feeder fish butt first.
Some will flip their food around, but jaguars are probably the biggest
butt-first fish eaters around.
LA
Don't forget to replace their cover after you feed them.
LA
Nine-inch female plonked into a 10-gallon tank less than five
minutes ago. Still looks good.
LA
Three days later she looks like this. Nice violet sheen.
LA
Another new female (02.21.05). Looks hungry.
Judging Comments:
So much variance in size, color, deportment, and fins brings out our
judging genes.
LA
04.15.05 Eight-inch probable female.
LA
Seven-inch probable male in tank next door.
TW
05.11.05. We sold the above pair to the Worrels in Fort Dodge two
weeks ago.
Tamre Worrel sent us this photograph of the happy couple. She said
they laid lots more eggs right after she took this picture. She also
said she's working on hatching the shrimp right now. The Worrells
and the jaguars are both happy couples.
LA
Five-inch probable male.
Last Words:
We like jaguar cichlids -- except those big-jawed lunkers a good four years
over the hill. LA
LA
Six-inch male of the "gold" variant.
LA
Half-inch shorter (and shyer) female gold. They spawned together
earlier.
