Very extended breeding tubes |
LA
Two traded in red parrot cichlids acting very chummy in a 55 of mixed
cichlids.
LA
So we put them in this 20H where they got even chummier.

LA
Female messing with the slate. Male acting protective.
LA
Very protective.
LA
More of a butter than a biter.
LA
Fat breeding tube on female.
LA
They spawned yesterday (my day off). July 10, 2007.
LA
Female carefully guards her eggs.
LA
She also fans the eggs a great deal.
LA
Next day, eggs not looking quite so good. White eggs are
non-viable.
LA
She still takes care of the eggs. Because of her strange mouth,
she cannot remove dead eggs.
LA
He still guards the whole tank.
LA
She still guards the eggs.
LA
Her chubby belly makes it hard to fan her eggs, but she persists.
LA
He still wants me to go away.

LA
Saprolegnia engulfs the entire egg mass. July 15, 2007.
LA
Extremely upset by the clean up process.
LA
Back to square one.
LA
Pregnant females can be belligerent.
Epilogue: Because their eggs did not hatch, the pair may be
sterile. They are a cross between red devils and gold severums.
This means they may be sterile because they are mules (a cross between
species). Or, since I did not see the egg-laying process, the male
my be incompetent, too young, too old, or just sterile as a mule.
Ditto for the female. We'll follow up and see what happens next
month. LA
