Prologue: When we first acquired
these three tilapia, we assumed they were color variants of the mossambic
mouthbrooders, Oreochromis mossambicus. We just figured some of
them had gotten into Lake Tanganyika. However, it turns out these guys
are Oreochromis tanganyikae, a different but very similar species
than the mossambics.
LA
Our three stars -- one male and two females.
Similarities:
♫"They look alike, they eat alike,
sometimes they even breed alike. Because they're cousins."♫
Nearly identical cousins and they sure do look like the mossambics --
except in color.
LA
Adult male. Not as big a mouth as the male mossambic.
LA
Adult female has a smaller mouth than the male.
LA
Still, she has a big enough mouth to brood the eggs.
LA
But not as big as the male's. Males and females both "kiss" each
other from time to time.
LA
And the male mossambic likes to "kiss" the male tanganyikan.
LA
Males are pretttier in color and finnage. Females are more subdued in
color and finnage.
LA
Females are also smaller and more subdued in manner.
