Prologue: Eating breakfast
Saturday morning we discovered this year's BIG dog show in the Des Moines
Register. And since it was in the (air-conditioned) Varied
Industries Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, we decided to scope it
out. We spent about three hours there and met many interesting dogs
(and people). Unfortunately, I can't remember all the breed names, but
we'll show you some of the interesting canines. We'll show them mostly
in the order we found them (pretty much random). We won't increase
your dog IQ, but we'll show you some cool canines. LA

Bouvier, Dog of Flanders,
working dog, herder. friendly (actually, every dog we met was friendly).

Can't remember his or her name. Interesting.

Female standard poodle.

Male ditto. Interesting doo.

Can't remember this little rascal.

Scottish something or other. Little guy.

Another non-ID-ed canine. What a memory.

At last one I can ID (of course the shirt helps a bit) -- a tiny female
Pomeranian. Her owner was spraying her with a primrose-scented product
because she was "in season." Very distracting to every male dog within
pheromone detecting distance.

Another little pom grudgingly being prepped for show.

Papillion
(French for "butterfly" due to its ears) -- Marie Antoinette's
favorite and a film noir starring Steve McQueen.

Two whippets, sort of midget greyhounds. Not often seen these days.

Pocket-sized Chihuahua. Looks like she needs a taco.

Wire-haired wiener dog -- seldom seen. Strapped at his grooming table.

One of the small terriers. Several were made up this way.

Quite a contrast with this large sharpei guard dog. He's not really
worried.

Almost standard Lassie colored sheltie. This is a tri-color.

Another sheltie of a different color -- a blue marrow. He did not even
look like a sheltie.

Little guy that I can't ID.

At last, one I can ID -- a standard wiener dog.

Black wiener dog.

Quite a contrast -- a great Dane. His owners said he only cost $10 a
month to feed.

All manner of Pooch paraphernalia could be found in abundance -- shirts,
breed shirts, jewelry for dogs (and owners), treats, foods, photographers,
leashes, in total some forty different vendors.

One of the more crowded vendors sold books. Books are getting harder
to find.

Couldn't help but notice the most crowded vendor was selling dogs.

As we headed toward the parking lot we couldn't miss this canine-powered
bicycle.
Epilogue: As
promised, we did not expand your canine IQ, however we definitely recommend
attending the Des Moines Kennel Club Show next year. LA
