Fish Swaps: Some members come looking for cheap fish. Some come for the unusual fish. Of course, the cichlid nuts come for the cichlids. And others come for the social interaction.
More than Fish: Some members brought reference books. Others brought used equipment. Chuck, our underwater gardener, brought lots of plants.
No Official Count: Since not everyone signed in as individuals (lots of families), Jo guesstimated about 100 people showed up for the swap portion of the meeting. Their $3 fees covered IAA’s cost for the room. Big sellers who bought a table were also charged a fee.
Getting the Word out: Much of the credit for the high turnout goes to Chuck Osborn (a Des Moines fish wholesaler). He included info stuffers in all his fish deliveries prior to the meeting. Not all retailers posted the info, but the little blue sheets got the word out around the state. We certainly posted it at Aqualand. When we visited at 10 am, we saw a lot of familiar faces. We think the IAA encourages interest in our hobby.
Bargains:
Even non-fish seekers could find bargains at hand. Cichlid decor
seemed to move fairly fast. Many cichlid fanatics feel there are
only two types of fish:
The Business Side: The swap wrapped up at 2 pm. But then we sat around until 3 pm waiting for one of the board members to show up. Seems he had to run home to tinkle or something. Everyone else spent the hour shooting the breeze about cichlids and bait.
Business Agenda: Exactly 22 people (plus two not tall enough to vote) stuck around for the business meeting, changes to the by-laws, dues discussion, and member definition. After those 2.5 hours of indescribably business stuff, Scott had to preside over the board meeting. That wraps it up until May.
