Free Fishing Day -- June 5, 2009.
Perfect June weather for a great fishing day -- 60 degrees and the sun
shining warmly. Normally it costs anglers $11 to fish for trout in
Iowa. No charge today -- if you happened to be between 2 and 15 years
old. And the DMACC lake gets two trout stockings per year with rainbow
trout. Plus the Iowa DNR was providing free trout nuggets, bait, and
fishing tackle. LA
LA
Just a pleasant stroll from the Des Moines Area Community College parking
lot to the lake.
LA
This fishing dock was the only crowded spot on the entire lake. And it
wasn't exactly crowded either.
LA
Plenty of Canada geese out and about. On the land and ...
LA
... on the "sea." Unfortunately, their droppings fertilize the lake.
LA
Making for a weedy barrier. Great for the fish. Not so great for
the anglers -- especially short anglers.
LA
Over to the right we see the DNR crowd huddled around the cooking and free bait
area.
LA
This huge water fountain increases the fish-growing capabilities of the lake,
while looking very attractive.
LA
Plenty of room to fish and snack on DNR trout.
LA
Just waiting for the free trout nuggets.
LA
Here the chef meticulously carves these trout filets into bite-size nuggets.
Idaho Trout. If you were
expecting Iowa trout at the free trout nugget table, lotsa luck. These
particular rainbow filets were flown in from Idaho.
LA
The nuggets inside this container were coated with fry batter with secret
herbs and spices.
LA
Then fried in Iowa corn oil until golden brown
LA
The crowd got larger as the trout fried. The nuggets float when done.
LA
Here we go. Trout nuggets -- Breakfast of Champions and young anglers.
LA
Several sponsors provided prizes. Not a whole lot of signage.
LA
Publicity came fron Van Harden , half of the "Van and Bonnie" WHO-AM radio team.
LA
Happy catcher of a bass. Can't realy tell from here, large or small mouth.
LA
Some of the short people needed help unhooking their catch. The DNR was
on the job.
LA
You won't see many rainbow trout taken this time of year in Iowa. This trout looks as shocked as the DNR people.
LA
Nice size green sunfish.
LA
Definite large mouth bass here.
LA
Another nice size bass.
LA
And a small sunfish proudly shown off by this young lady.
LA
We didn't stay for the whole event. Some of us have to work.
LA
The north end of the lake was not crowded at all.
LA
And here's what the whole event was dedicated to -- passing on angling
skills to the next generations (especially on nice days).
