Free Fishing Day. Free fish, free
bait, free T-shirts. Plus lots of free kids' foods. Whatadeal.
What a turn out. Too many poles and bobbers to count. And too
cold to count on your fingers -- somewhere in the high forties with a stiff
breeze. The inclement weather did not reduce the turnout. LA
LA
Hey, dude. Where's my car? Waterworks Park was packed.
LA
Gets bigger every year.
LA
Kids to the right of me ...
LA
Kids to the front of me ...
LA
Kids to the left of me ...
LA
Kids even to the lefter of me. Some wearing their ofishal purple
fish-catching shirts.
LA
Here's the ofishal volunteer staff issuing what's left of the ofishal
fish-catching shirts.
LA
One of these guys said he'd never untangled or cut so many lines in his life.
LA
Never did figure out where this particular line was going.
LA
This golfer was telling everyone where to go. Look like a cushy job?
LA
Well, not so much.
LA
Lots of concession stands. No line at the ice cream station.
LA
Getting your gear together is half the battle.
LA
The other half is to keep from freezing.
LA
There's two of them under this blanket.
LA
A little insulation never hurts.
LA
Serious anglers don't need no stinkin' blankets.
LA
And there were lots of serious anglers angling in the less than warm weather.
LA
As mentioned earlier, plenty of free bait.
LA
Handing out bait as fast as he could.. There was also an entire dumpster
of empty boxes.
LA
It's a Berkley product and I'd never even heard of it.
Iowa Product. Former Iowa
representative, Berkley Bedell, makes this tasty bucket o' bait and nearly a
couple dozen other bait products -- as well as fishing lines, poles, and
multiple other fishing products. BassPro's selling these pint buckets o'
bait on their website for $19.99. Somebody kicked in a lot o' bucks.
The minnows in here worked like a charm. Most of the bullheads reeled in
exceeded a foot in length. Two kids had a stringer of nearly a dozen.
LA
If you've ever cleaned a bullhead, you know how great this service is.
LA
The first catcher of a tagged fish chose this stylish pink bicycle. We saw
lots of tagged winners.
LA
Kids like the gummy Swedish Fish which I'd never heard of either.
Lots of Snack Foods. Old Dutch
potato chips were there and sang the Star-Spangled Banner to kick things off on
an ofishal foot. They evidently had a Cheetos equivalent product because
we saw lots of orange fingers. Yum. Cheetos and bait. An
unbeatable combo. We left for several hours and returned after lunch.
And after all the prizes were awarded.
LA
It's over. Still, the dedicated anglers stick around to catch more
bullheads.
Aftermath. Only the hardcore
remain. Fishing still pretty good. But best of all, the temperature
went way up to 55 F. Too bad the wind kept up. We heard an
announcement for "50 cent hotdogs and one dollar hamburgers." Too bad I
ate on the way back to the derby.
LA
Overcoats still needed. And you can see one of the banks of porta-potties.
Always a festive sight.
Lotsa Porta-Potties. When you
concentrate thousands of kids into one centralized area, you need to be
prepared. They were. All told in the various areas of the
various ponds there were nearly a hundred porta-potties -- no waiting or
whining.
LA
Even the shouting was over.
LA
Still swinging those poles and drowning those worms. No short hitters
here.
Last Words. If you really like to
fish, these fishing holes will yield exceptional results for several days to
come. Thanks HyVee and the other sponsors. Except for nearly
freezing to death, the kids certainly enjoyed the day. LA
