LA
Female and male pearl gouramis very near breeding condition. Good
looking fish.
Why More Pearl
Gouramis? Usually pearl gouramis come in at a little over an inch. Few people
appreciate the small ones that look like bait. But everyone loves
adult size pearl gouramis with adult colors. When these come into
breeding condition, they make a striking show fish. We’ll show you
some pics and give you some information you can use.
LA
Messy tank but nice color on these males.
LA
Females also look attractive, just not as colorful. They have a
short dorsal fin.
LA
In addition to brighter colors, males also sport longer dorsal and anal
fins.
LA
Most male gouramis sport that longer dorsal fin.
Easy to Sex
Adults: You can’t tell sexes on the little guys, but you can
sex the adults from across the room. Adult females, with their
network of iridescent pearls, are striking on their own. However, the
males with their orange/red chests overshadow the subtle attractiveness of
the females. Males get even brighter colors when they come into
breeding condition. Is there any wonder that adult pearls are nearly
always sold as pairs? Just remember, without the female in the tank,
there’s not as much reason for him to color up.
LA
Just a nice looking fish.
Temperament: Your
pearl gouramis will never uproot or eat your plants, beat up their tank
mates, or swallow them whole (except baby guppies). They have a most
pleasant personality.
LA
Here you can see the extensions in the male's anal fin.
Good Eaters: Pearl
gouramis like flake foods -- and most other foods that will fit into their
smaller than average mouths. They love live worms and frozen
foods. Any of these will brighten their colors.
LA
Younger male. No anal fin extensions.
LA
Older male with longer fin rays.
Temperature: Plenty
happy at 75 degrees, pearl gouramis get even happier at 80 degrees and
thus more colorful. Eighty also brings them into spawning
condition. They won’t spawn in tanks with a lot of
turbulence. The extra current breaks up their bubble nests.
LA
Not a hider.
Not Shy: Pearls
settle in rapidly. They might hang back the day you add them to your
tank, but they’re part of the family by the next day. Best of all,
they like to flash their profiles at you.
