Intro: As most of us know, danios eagerly scatter their
non-adhesive eggs willy-nilly when the sun comes up. We also
know they just as eagerly devour their eggs and fry. The
traditional way to spawn them provides a layer of marbles or chunky
gravel on the bottom to protect the eggs from their parents.
In case you don't have all your marbles, here's another way or two
to spawn the speedy little devils. LA
LA
Start with a yard of nylon net. It cost less than a buck.
LA
Then I just happened to have a bag of 6" nylon ties lying around.
No idea on the cost.
LA
Then I bought an 8' PVC tube plus 8 elbows -- about $8 all together.
LAI
couldn't find either Aqualand hacksaw, so I bought a new one for $5.
LA
Then I made a PVC floating rectangle and attached the tutu netting with
nylon ties.
LA
Trim the nettin with scissors. $1 from the Dollar Store.
LA
The hard part's done.
LA
We added another (smaller) water-filled PVC inside to make it neater.
LA
Looks like great big breeder cage only in decorator color.
LA
Perfect -- in theory.
LA
We added the breeders. Cool, eh. Except it rode so low the
breeders got out.
LA
So, we invested $2 in some Dollar Store chip clicks and came up with
this.
LA
Then we added the sinking PVC rectangle to sort of level it out.
The breeders are in there.
Last Words: Without the sinking PVC water-filled rectangle,
you can make this for less than $3. When the eggs hatch and become
free swimming. the fry will need infusoria, then microworms and/or newly
hatched brine shrimp. You can give them powdered food in a few
weeks. Good luck. LA
