If your Tank is NEW, start by “conditioning “
your water.
-
Age
it 24 to 48 hours.
-
Add
one teaspoon salt per gallon
-
Add
NovAqua.
-
Add
beneficial bacteria.
-
Add
half dose Ich Cure.
-
Float
fish for 5 minutes.
-
Release
fish.
-
Watch
for bullies.
Float
your fish in their plastic bags about five minutes to equalize their
temperature. Then release
them. Keep your eyes peeled
for bullies, injured fish, and sick fish.
Watch
for Bullies. Some fish --
like some people -- want to push their tank mates around.
Letting one fish beat another to death ranks as an act of cruelty
and shows signs of very poor fishkeeping skills.
We
Guarantee Our Fish. However,
we really hate to see one get brought back that was beaten to death.
Ditto on letting one big honker eat up all the little ones.
It’s your job to protect them from each other.
Keep your eyes open and remove any mean fish NOW.
Medicate
Carefully. With the
exception of Ich Cure, we find many medications cause more problems than
they cure. Effective
antibiotics also kill or inhibit the action of the bacteria in your under
gravel filters. When you use a
good antibiotic, it’s like starting over with a brand new tank.
Before you treat your fish we’d like to:
-
Test your water, and
-
Eyeball your fish.
Many
diseases can be cleared up just by cleaning your tank.
Don’t use a medication unless you know exactly what you’re
treating. Eye drops won’t cure jock itch, no matter how many drops
you use.
Remove
Uneaten Food. Decaying
food on the bottom increases the bacteria in the water and decreases the
oxygen. If you overfeed,
you usually see cloudy water
first. Clean their tank by
using a gravel vacuum cleaner before it starts smelling bad.
Your
carbon cartridges remove odors but they can’t keep up with a heavy-hand
on the food can. Uneaten food
causes more problems than any other mistake you can make.
Feed them often but lightly. Two
LIGHT feedings per day work out well.
If
Your Tank is Not NEW, it’s not always a good idea to mix new fish with
established fish. Quarantine
questionable fish in a quarantine tank.
Using
a bare tank with a sponge filter makes sure you won’t introduce some
strange disease into your healthy aquarium.
Picking up one of those “week-end specials” may mean you bring
home more than you bargain for. Follow
these steps whether you quarantine them or not.
-
Keep
them from chilling on the trip home.
-
Float
fish for 5 minutes.
-
Add
NovAqua
-
Add
a half dose Ich Cure.
-
Release
your fish.
-
Watch
for bullies.
