LA
Variegated acorus (left) stays short. Acorus, also called "Japanese
fan" and "sweet flag," makes a good edging
plant. Green taro to the right grows huge. Plant in a large
heavy pot and protect it from the wind. Taros tip over easily
because of their huge size -- also called "elephant ears."
Under greenhouse conditions, green taros grow taller and much wider than
you.
LA
Variegated four-leaf clover, marsilea mutica, are a marginal plant.
The leaves float at the top around the edges of your pond.
LA
Japanese iris, Iris ensata , perennial iris much shorter (two feet) than
the variegated Japanese iris we sold last year which grew to six or eight
feet tall.
LA
Good old umbrella palm, Cyperus alternifolius, a perennial favorite.
But really an annual unless you you bring it in for the winter. It
makes an attractive house plant if given lots of water and a moderate to
good light source. Multiplies easily by root division. Provide
a large pot because this plant spreads fast and can grow several feet
tall. Excellent background plant..
LA
Dwarf papyrus, Cyperus haspans, a smaller and less vigorous (but still
plenty vigorous) plant that stays moderately sized (two feet).
LA
Violet stem taro, Colocasia esculenta, a much more refined relative to the
green taro. Even though it's one third the size, it still needs
protection from the wind.
LA
Yellow and blue irises, Iris versicolor and Iris pseudacorus, two very
strong growing plants. They max out at about two feet and need
really big, shallow pots.
LA
Water lettuce, Pistia stratioides, grows like a weed in full sun.
Frost kills it quick.
