Carp Diem Alright, you fellow carp
lovers, what can we say that hasn't already been said about the mighty carp.
Our federal government went to great pains to make sure that everyone would have
access to this tasty and excellent sport fish -- the wily carp. Not to
muddy the waters (bit of a pun there), but we're going to take a look at a dozen
or so koi that show some of the variations built into koi, which as you know,
are carp.
Beauty ain't all Color. Koi are the
flashier foliages on the carp family tree. But if you've ever seen a
school of foot-long carp in clear shallow water, you'll see a silver fish with
red and yellow fins -- an attractive fish without the flashy reds, oranges,
yellows, blacks and blues of their koi cousins. They resemble the
red-tailed tinfoil barb (only prettier).
LA
You'll see the barbels on most koi. Most of these guys had four. The
second set were tiny.
LA
Plain vanilla brassy koi -- also available in silver and brown.
LA
Doitsu or mirror koi.
Doitsu? In Iowa we call these
mirror or German (Deutsche) carps. The Japanese transmogrified
Deutsche to doitsu -- as in bier to bieru.
LA
Mirror or doitsu scales run along the lateral line and often the top of the
body.
LA
Similar koi -- a bit larger.
LA
Sometimes their scales run only along the lateral line and the top -- no scales on
most of the body.
LA
Above the mirror scales you see an outline of scales but no actual scales.
LA
Lack of scales much more obvious on these guys.
LA
Similar.
LA
Ditto.
LA
Leather carps lack the scales altogether or have a few scattered here and
there.
LA
Another leather carp of a different color.
LA
These are a different batch from the same group.
LA
Silver plain vanilla koi.
LA
Leather carp in silver.
LA
Plain vanilla koi in a bronze color.
LA
Mirror or doitsu koi in bronze.
LA
Here we see the butterfly lineage coming to the fore. Cool fish -- not
your normal koi.
LA
Bronze doitsu koi.
LA
Koi use these barbels to help find food in murky water and at night
LA
Small koi make excellent bottom cleaners.
LA
Here's a "leatherback" starting to develop colors. You can almost see
his smaller barblels.
Population Note All dozen
of these koi came from a larger population of 120 koi from an Iowa koi
pond west of Earlham. These are some koi the herons missed.
