Hello again. After that last batch of information I received from you,
my tank has been doing alright for now. Unfortunately, I lost my Plecostomus about 2 weeks after I bought it. He looked like he was starving, which doesn't make sense because I fed him wafers every night and there was plenty of algae to feed off of. Maybe the convicts were bullying? Anyway, I was wondering if certain types of Gouramis could be added to my tank of 4 convicts, 1 ram, and 4 green corys. I have a Paradise Gourami in a 5 gallon in my family room, but I'm not entirely sure if he'll get along with these guys since I've heard they are pretty much like Bettas. I also wanted to try adding others like pearls or blue flames too add more color to the tank, if that's possible. Thank you for your help!
P.S. I'm starting to make some more caves in my tank. Besides building rocks up (which looks awesome), what other materials could I use besides plant pots? And the color that's diffusing out of my driftwood is making my tank look really sweet!

A:  I doubt that the convicts bullied your pleco to death.  Sometimes young plecos just die.  Your four convicts are your biggest problem in your tank.  I'm surprised they're leaving your ram alone.  Because of the convicts, I wouldn't add gouramis.  The paradise maybe, but once those convicts pair off, you will see problems.  They'll even start pestering your corys.  LA
PS
Rather than just plain rocks, look around for lace rock or Texas holey rock.  Some people like that tint that diffuses from new driftwood.  Others hate it.  If you get tired of it, you can take it out with activated carbon.

Janice Robertson, April 1, 2007
Larry, Not sure if you remember me or not. I have the rather old goldfish whose tank is driving me crazy. I did a complete water change about a month ago, new rocks, new everything, I put in the correct amount of water conditioner (AquaSafe) and the correct amount of Easy Balance. The tank became cloudy in a week. So I waited a week and did a 3/4 water change this time using only the AquaSafe (based on the # of gallons). Anyway, the tank is cloudy still -- kind of a greenish cloudy. What did I do wrong? Or what do I need to do? Thanks

A:  The most common cause of greyish cloudy water is over feeding.  Greenish cloudy water usually stems from too much light.  For further info go to Cloudy Water.  LA

Sharon Kenney, Cedar Rapids, IA, April 2, 2007
Do you carry any hairless-Dumbo rats? These 2 pictures are 2 of my first three I finally got through breeding. 3 more were born 12 days ago! Your pet store looks very impressive. I am located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. How much are your various rats? If you don't have these, are you interested in carrying them?  The dates are not correct on my pictures, I didn't reset my camera date. Thanks for your time. Your website is great. I'll go peek at it again now.

SK

A:  We usually sell the normal hooded rats (with hair), but because we buy rats from our customers we occasionally have the hairless rats.  We sell our regular rats for:
   ●  Smalls      $4;
   ●  Mediums  $5;
   ●  Larges      $6.
We charge a dollar less if they bring their own box.  Realize that most of our rats go for snake food.  We would be interested in adding the Dumbo rats to our lineup.  Your hairless Dumbo rats would obviously be in the pet category and probably sell for more.  LA
PS  Does Walt know you're using his Dumbo© name?

Mike Manning, April 2, 2007
M
y 14-inch male jaguar cichlid and 7-inch female have laid eggs for the first time. What can I do from here? Leave them to it or try and remove catfish to another tank?

A:  Definitely take out any catfish -- especially any plecostomi.  Don't be too upset if their first few spawns don't pan out.  LA

Andrew de Lange, April 2, 2007
Hello, I was reading your article on the red-eared slider (Water Turtles) and noticed that you said that from time to time "Water turtles in captivity occasionally expel eggs in their water."
We thought when we bought our turtle, it was a boy. But when we came home from a long weekend, we found 4 eggs in the water.  We have had the turtle for 15 years. Do we just throw these eggs out as our turtle has never come into contact with another turtle since it was 4 inches long?
Thank you for your help,

A:  Her eggs are infertile.  In addition to that, they have also drowned in the water.  The bright spot?  Her egg production means you are keeping her in excellent health.  LA

Mickey Campbell, April 3, 2007
Hey. I mailed you awhile ago about a blue dragon goby. It was happy and eating and all that for a long time. But now I got it a friend... cause everywhere it says that they would be happy together. But they are fighting horribly. Will this settle?  Or is the only option for them to separate?

A:  Normally they get along fine -- but not always.  Obviously your guys don't get along.  A temporary divider would probably be the best solution.  LA

Mickey Campbell, April 3, 2007
How do I get a temporary divider for a 32 gallon tank? And also... what do I do after that? Leave my tank divided?

A:  Most fish stores sell tank dividers.  Penn Plax makes them.  Get an oversize one and trim it to size with a pair of scissors.  Remove it often (that's the temporary part) when you can keep an eye on them.  They should get along eventually.  Can't find a plastic divider?  Have your local hardware store cut a piece of glass the right size.  Make sure they "seam" the edges so you won't cut yourself.  Or buy one of those fluorescent light fixture "egg crate" covers and trim it to size with side cutters.  LA

Katz4jk, April 3, 2007
Hello, great website and information on the savannah monitor! I purchased a hatchling a couple of weeks ago, I've been reading not to over feed them. I was wondering how many of the small to medium sized crickets would you feed them at a time? Thanks if you can help.

A:  He could probably eat a hundred of the smalls.  I'd give him a dozen of the mediums.  Then wait and feed him again one day after he cleans up the dozen.  LA

Ben, April 3, 2007
Hi guys! I own a betta and  I keep it in a medium sized bowl. I threw in some Java lance but it's a little big for his bowl. Does this matter? Thanks

A:  No.  It does not matter to him.  LA

Vishal Samboju, Riverside, CA, April 4, 2007
Dear Aqualand, what cichlid is pretty easy to breed? I was thinking of starting w/ jack dempseys. Also I read about the Indian almond leaves and if u get leaves from a real Indian almond tree if that would work or any almond tree. Also is there any other product that has the same or better effect of these leaves. And I would like to know if firemouths get along with dempseys thank you.

A:  Convict cichlids are easily the easiest cichlid to spawn, if you have a male and a female.  Use just the Indian almond leaf.  As far as I know, nothing else works as well.  Firemouths are a sissy cichlid.  I think dempseys would kill them.  LA

Kyle, wideopenwest, April 4, 2007
LA, I bought some Apistogramma caucatoides a while ago, some triple reds. I have 3 males, a female, and one that I'm sure is a male, but is whitish-yellow-gold. Here is a pic of him and his other 'roomies'. Not the best shots, though. Also if you have any breeding tips. They're in a 20 with 2 BN plecos, a striped Raphael, and a darter. Thanks for your time.

KZ

A:  Give them at least two small caves facing front so you can be a peeping Tom.  Warm them up five degrees.  Condition them with three small feedings a day.  Make one of them a frozen or live food feeding.  The bristlenose plecos and the Raphael catfish will probably eat their eggs.  Take them out.  LA

Diane Anderson, April 5, 2007
Would appreciate any help you could lend.....purchased two male crabs (one slightly larger than the other) and were told they are called "patriot crabs".  The seller had them in ten gallon aquariums (more than one in each), mixed with fish, and completely full of water with no access to "land".   Hose to pump air into water....no heaters with room temperature around 70.   We asked several questions prior to purchasing these and were told the afore-mentioned satisfied all their requirements.....upon returning home (150 miles away) and researching on internet for further information, am receiving conflicting requirements.....Do they need access to both water AND dry area above water?   Can you have more than one in a 10 gallon aquarium?  If we leave the filtering system on (tube goes from top of tank to water level) can they climb out?  Do they require specific minimum temperature?  Food?  We used bottled water as we have "city" water with chemicals.   How large will these get and how long do they live?Thank you so much.

LA
Patriot crab dorsal view.

LA
Ventral view of a female patriot crab.

A:  Cardiosoma armatum are called patriot crabs (and sometimes rainbow crabs) because of their colors.  They live life on the edge -- of the water, that is.  They need access to water and land.  They will crawl up your airline and bail.  They scavenge for food and eat nearly anything.  I feed mine dead goldfish which they will eat from my fingers.  They are pugnacious and like to dis-arm each other.  Room temp is fine if you keep your room at 75 Fahrenheit.  They spend a great deal of time hiding.  I am totally guessing when I say I expect them to live about five years.  Of course, you'll never know how old they are when you buy them.  LA

Kyle, wideopenwest, April 6, 2007
I would like to know if you have any tips to trigger spawning in dwarf BN
plecos? I have 2 female albinos, one male, and a VERY expensive so called calico long fin. I have had the long fin spawn twice, the first time was
unsuccessful (wrong foods) and the second time went great. The spawn was about 45 standard fin and 15-20 long finned. None were albino like the mom.
Your website is amazing and your BN section has some breeding tips. It says PVC pipe. Ours spawned in a hollow light house both times. I will switch to those and what should the dimensions be? Also, could the almond leaves or betta leaves trigger spawning? One last question, how long is there between spawns? The last time they spawned was late in November of last year. Thanks for your time and patience.

A:  There's nothing magic about PVC tubes.  I just happened to have a bunch of them lying around.  Plecos like to spawn in caves or holes where they can easily protect their eggs.  I have no particular triggers for making them breed other than feeding them well and making large water changes.
When you breed an albino with a normal color, the albino color is recessive.  If you breed the offspring together, you would get 25% albinos.  If you breed albinos together, you'll get 100% albinos.
I've never used the almond leaves during spawning, but they would probably help.  However, the the effect would be reduced with every water change unless you prepared aged (with leaves) water ahead of time for your water changes.
I don't have a clue how long to expect between spawns.  Your schedule should double because you have two females.  Your chances will increase if you offer several possible spawning sites.  And the larger your tank the better (to decrease male combativeness).  LA

I was reading on your site for information on raising the four baby sun cats I just bought when I saw the link for ghost shrimp and remembered my personal experience with ghost shrimp.
I had 5 parrot fish and an eel and decided to give them some live food. I bought approx. 30 ghost shrimp and added them to the tank. The parrot
fish went ballistic and the shrimp actually began jumping out of the tank! I spent nearly an hour picking them up and putting them back in the tank only to have them jump out again, before I could get the hood back on! Fortunately about 2/3 of the shrimp were devoured by the parrots and those that managed to reach the bottom were able to hide out and survive for several weeks.
After this experience I started calling the ghost shrimp "suicide
shrimp" and "water lemmings" as a joke. Just thought I'd share this fun little story with you all and thank you for the information on sun catfish.

A:  Thanks for your shrimp report.  When netting them out of their tank, they'll also flip onto the floor.  I guess they'd rather not be eaten.  LA

Matt M, St. Louis MO, April 8, 2007
I love your site and use it all the time. I have some questions to ask about birds. I own a male pacific parrotlet. I have had him for about 3 months from just after weaning. He eats pellets and I also feed him veggies, fruit, whole-wheat toast, and millet. He lives in my room upstairs almost in isolation. This is my problem. I can put him in the living room downstairs where people smoke and have the TV on late at night (me and my sisters are teens, ha, ha) and the kitchen is in the next room where we use Teflon pans!!! Or I can keep him in my room and get another bird (a male). I would prefer the other to have the blue color mutation, but I heard the color mutation birds cannot properly digest pellets. Is that true???
I do spend about an hour to 2 hours with him every day. Is that enough time? But after that he’s just alone with his toys (only because I have work and school). I just wanted your opinion on what I should do. Thank you.
PS I'm only 18 so I don’t know everything yet. I spend a lot on all my pets and plan to spend a lot more because I love having pets and just animals in general. I also have a 30 gallon tank and plan to get a Reef, salt water tank in the near future. I also have had a leopard gecko for 10 years. He got loose in the house. I plan to visit your shop some day!!!!

A:  I've never heard that color mutation affects digestion in any way.  Sounds like you're wise to keep your bird upstairs.  You can get him a friend, but you'll find both less friendly to you.  They'll bond with each other instead of you.  If you want a really friendly bird, stick with one.  LA

Scott Radke, Cleveland, OH, April 8, 2007
Hello, I am very interested in where I can purchase some white fantail ryukins. Can you help me find  a place to buy them? Thank you,

A:  I tried a search for white ryukins and found absolutely no web sites that sell them.  I was surprised.  So I can't help you.  LA

Lindsey Bergin, La Cross, WI, April 8, 2007
I am making a web page on the red-eyed tree frog for my bio 203 class. The web page will be mentioning things about the red eyed tree frog such as its classification information, habitat, nutrition, life history, adaptation, etc. This web page will also be viewable to the public, I believe, through our school
website. I was wondering if you would allow me to use your picture of the red eyed tree frog on my web page, giving you credit for your photographs) of course! Thanks for your time.

A:  Sure.  Just add my web site address and send me 1/2 your grade.  On second thought, you'll probably need the grade.  Send me your web site address when you're done, and let me know what grade you get  LA
PS
You better get a good one.

Sabrina Rojas, April 9, 2007
Hi. I was just browsing through your site and absolutely loved it!! It's cool. I myself own 3 of these iridescent sharks. I would like to send you some pictures of mine! If that's okay. How? I noticed they do need lots of room cause they keep knocking this big palm tree down that's in their tank. However, they do get excited and start ramming their selves. And it really gets me scared. Do you know if they play dead??? One time my big one was going crazy in the tank, and I noticed he knocked his nose off. I think! Well, I have a 12 inch, 9 inch, and a 6 inch. They're all in one 60 gallon tank along with other little fish, like tiger barbs, zebras.....etc. Is that ok?? Anything I need to really know about them???? I was thinking about getting rid of the smallest one! What do you think? For more room! But I'd rather not!! Another BIG question:
How do you know if they're a boy or girl?
I find it so hard to tell. Well, thank you very much! Hope to hear from you!
Have a wonderful day!       Sincerely.

A:  When iridescent sharks get wound up, they can't see the glass in time to stop.  Put some plastic plants at each end and he'll stop bonking his beak.  Even tho they're called "sharks," they don't pester fish too large to swallow.  The various size sharks usually get along fine.  Just like you, I cannot tell the sexes apart either.  LA

Gregory Zuccolotto, April 10, 2007
Hello, I am interested in purchasing some albino channel catfish.  Do you have any for sale or can you recommend where I could purchase some through the internet?

A:  We usually have them for sale on an every day basis, but we do not ship.  I really cannot recommend a specific internet retailer.  LA
