   Dear Sir,
I'm a fish breeder from Poland. I'm presently writing a book
about cold water fish incl. garden ponds. I don't have however any
pictures of Rosy red minnows. They are rather rare in Poland, but
from time to time we can buy them in pet stores.
Could you please, email me and give me your permission to publish
a few of your wonderful pictures of Rosy red minnow in my book?
The pictures must be however in high resolution and saved as jpg.
I think, some fish in aquarium would be sufficient. Perhaps some
spawning too or two color batches.
I can not pay for the pictures, but of course your name and address
of your website will be mentioned in the book. What do you think?
   best regards,

A:  Heck of a deal.  I can always use more Polish friends.  I have two or three hundred rosy reds on hand, so I should be able to find a couple cute ones.  There's a few of the original greys also.  The ones I have are too young to breed, but I'll see what I can do -- or rather what they can do.  Give me a week or two.  Next time you're in Des Moines you can front me a shot or two of Slivovitz.  LA

LB from NY, January 11, 2011
I think the information on your pages is wonderful. Whenever I get a new pet I do a few weeks of research and your site is one of my top sites. You go straight to what a person really needs to know. Some of the information conflicts sometimes but not often enough to kill any of the pets I have, It would only differ a few degrees here and there. Any of the troubles I've had wouldn't be from your information and I think you do a great service to people with your fact pages. And you spark a lot of interest in animals with your pages. Because of your information I have a ball python, savanna monitor and a beautiful community fish tank. Thanks to your pages and keep up the good work. LB from NY.

A:  You'll love my new snail series then.  Coming soon.  LA

Michael Hertzberg, January 11, 2011
Hi your pictures on your page are really great
Im trying to meet some new cute people like yourself

Thanks ill be on all day because I don't have to work xoxo

A:  See?  This why I hesitated before enlisting in Facebook.  Sorry, dude.  I plan to be busy the next three or four years.  LA

Amanda Cook, FL, January 12, 2011
You keep doing what your doing LA the info's great and the haters need a life ^-^ if they dont like it then they don't have to go on it again and if they think it's incorrect then damn who is right???
TO ALL HATERS:
You know if toxins were so bad for dumpys or any other frogs then why would they live near us??? If you use you brains and think about it people, toxins are everywhere and on everything and every frog is built different. Same species or not they still have different bodies and can tolerate different things better then others. If toxins were so bad for frogs then why would they be in our yards (which can have many different chemicals on it), on our house (paint duh), ditches (they can contain soap from when people wash their cars, and oils too (idk why but this one ditch in our neighborhood turns brown and the water shines with chemicals) and other things that live in there just the same with our ponds) Frogs still live in them hell even turtles do and leeches too. EEEEEWWWWW (i had one on me once) they live in ditches, on roads (which have oils from our cars) I have seen many big bullfrogs living in storm drains but Hell the very air we and animals breathe has chemicals in it!!! So why can't people stop freaking? And for where dumpys live, well look at where they live and look at their surroundings. There is always something they can ingest that they aren't supposed to but they live. There are many people that buy animals that look cool and stuff and want to hold them. It's normal. I'm not saying everything should be held but you shouldnt freak out about things you cant' prevent from happening, there are people that are going to want to hold the frog, it's normal human desire, it's natural to want to touch the big fat froggy :) .

LA
Careful.  Not all frogs are as nice as Kermit.

A:  High on my New Year's resolutions (actually the only one) was to feed my frogs less toxins in 2011.  So there'll be more toxins for everyone else.  Cheers.  LA

Amanda Cook, FL, January 12, 2011

Hi, I have a question about my mystery snails. I have gold ones that won't stop laying 'eggs', what can I do to slow or stop this from happening? They are laying a 'set' every week to two weeks and I am not sure how to keep them from doing it!!! I have tried keeping the water level up and they still find a way! HELP!!! What do I do with them when they do start hatching??? I will have several hundred and I am so not equipped to handle that many! Thanks in advance,

A:  Just scrape off the eggs and put them into your round file.  Lots of people would like to have your problem.  LA

I BOUGHT SECOND HAND 55 GAL TANK. GOOD CONDITION EXCEPT FOR BRACE IN THE MIDDLE IS BROKEN. SOME OF THE BLACK STRIP AROUND THE TOP IS A LITTLE DRY ROTTED. NOT BAD. HOLDS WATER GOOD. NO LEAKS.  SEEMS TO BOW OUT JUST A LITTLE. WHEN YOU MASH IN ON AQUARIUM IN THE MIDDLE WHERE THE BRACE SHOULD BE AND THEN LET GO THE STRIP  AROUND THE TOP CRACkLES A LITTLE. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON REINFORCEMENT OR FIXING. HAVEN'T ADDED GRAVEL YET. HAS BEEN SITTING WITH WATER FOR 2-3 DAYS. PLUS WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT, IT SET WITH WATER TO SEE IF IT LEAKED.  NO LEAKS. LOOKS GOOD JUST WOULD LIKE TO GIVE IT A LITTLE SUPPORT IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS YOUR INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.    THANKS  ------WE HAVE LOTS OF SNOW AND ICE---------HAPPY NEW YEAR---

A:  I've got three 55s like yours (broken middle braces).  Your local fish store can order a new top frame for you.  Make sure you get the right brand.  Taking the old frame off can be a chore.  Put a 2 by 4 against the frame and whack it upwards with a hammer.  Repeat if necessary (and it will be).  Glue the new top frame on with aquarium sealer.  LA
PS  Quit pushing on the middle to make it spring back and forth.

Brittany Popa, Norwalk, OH, January 13, 2011
Dear Aqualand, I am emailing you to inform you that your oscar section on your website should be fixed. That information is wrong and i feel that your causing oscars to be mistreated like many of them are today. On your site, you claim one oscar can live in a 30 gallon tank, 2 can live in a 55 gallon tank, and that 4 can live it a 75 gallon. This info is VERY wrong. One oscar can live in a 55 gallon but a 75 is way more recommended. I know someone who has a 14.5 inch oscar...can you see 4 of those living comfortably in a 75? no, you cant. I'm a member of the forum www.Oscarfishlover.com. and there are a lot of very smart oscar owners on this site and they would be the first people id send a newbie in oscars to....but I'm just saying that maybe you should go to the site and check it out...maybe you'll learn something new.

A:  You don't need a huge tank for your oscars IF you make regular water changes and IF you don't overfeed.  I'll add your input to one of my oscar pages.  Thanks.  LA

Brittany Poppa, Norwalk, OH, January 14, 2011
Thanks but one more thing, how can you say you don't need a huge tank for this huge fish? I think a 75 should be minimum for one Oscar because even a 55 is to small. Explain to me how a 14 inch fish can turn around in a tank that's 12 inches on the sides? I just think that people should know how huge these fish can get. And at the growing rate of 1 to 1 1/2 inches a month, within a year these things get at least 11 inches. So idk I don't want to offend you, but I've seen SO many people joining the forum and having a way too small tank and way too many oscars and then we tell them what's wrong and why their fish are sulking and they get pissed and leave the forum because that's not what PetsMart told them. Just yesterday a guy had 2 oscars in a 20 gallon and left the forum because we told him that's was WAY too tiny :/

A:  I don't remember recommending putting a 14-inch fish in a 10 gallon tank.  However, if they slanted into the diagonal they could turn around without breaking a sweat.  An oscar kept in a 30 or even a 20 does not have his feelings hurt enough to sulk.  He doesn't know any better.  As I said earlier, "the bigger the better."  The theoretically happiest oscars I ever saw were in Florida in a 2-foot deep concrete pond about 40 feet across.  I'm sorry your forum has dropouts.  Sometimes you can't make everyone happy by telling them what to do.  LA

Brittany Poppa, Norwalk, OH, January 14, 2011
I never said for you to put n Oscar in a ten gallon. What I meant is a 55 gallon tanks sides are 12" while a 75 gallon has 18" sides. And yes the reason the fish would "sulk" is because his water quality would be bad because of how many fish are in the tank and or how small it is. My Oscar sulked because I took his driftwood out so he could catch his guppies easier. So I could see one being all blah cus of how poopy his water is.

A:  Don't sweat it Brit.  I was just pulling your leg.  As you might expect, I like oscars and have for decades.  Heck, I even like the people that keep oscars.  LA

Brittany Poppa, Norwalk, OH, January 15, 2011
It's alright, idk I mean you're the pro anyway. I mean I'm only 19... But I just really wanted to point that info out to you. I'm just tired of people jammin this amazing fish into an itty bitty tank and killing it. So all I can say is thank you very much for adding my info to your site, sir. If yo're ever curious tho, you should def check out that site. My acc on it is tigergirl301 if ya ever feel like joinin the forum and addin me.

A:  19 is a cool age (although I'm not really sure I can remember it).  I don't get involved in many forums (like none), but thanks for the invite.  My mission is similar to yours.  I'm trying to convince people to quit buying those eaxecutive (with the emphasis on execute) tanks.  LA

Brittany Poppa, Norwalk, OH, January 17, 2011
Alright that's cool. Executive huh? Good way to put it! :) so you own a pet store correct? To bad I live all the way in Ohio....I need a good fish store around here. I'm stuck with Petco which isn't TOO bad...but then there's...pet supplies plus...*quivers* horrible....felt like I was talking to a special kid when I talked to the aquatic specialist...if that's what u wanna call him lol. We do have a fish store tho! But the guy isn't too cool to be around. Plus he talks to you like you're an idiot and he's Jesus. I doubt you remember but like 2 years or 3 I emailed u about my peppered cory cats laying eggs. They never did breed again. In fact those fish are dead...BUT I have 2 bronze cories (one was rescued and just happened to be a female) and they bred like a week after I got her, now the male was almost 4 so I was surprised he still had it in him lol but they laid eggs. I saved about 30 eggs using ur razor blade idea. The rest of the eggs were stuck to my bristle nose pleco's lil beard lol but then I put the eggs in a 10 gallon, 3 hatched, 2 died, and now one baby is almost a month old and back in the 30 gallon and doing great! :)

A:  Lower case congrats on your cories.  It would be upper case if you'd saved more than one.  Try to be nice to your local fish store owners no matter how big a doofus they seem.  They can always learn from their customers.  LA
PS
I was in Toledo decades ago for an American Killifish Association show, but I have no idea where Norwalk is.  I know there is (or was) a Norwalk Aquarium Society.  Any relation?

Brittany Poppa, Norwalk, OH, January 18, 2011
Hmmmm nope idk bout the Norwalk fish thing. But I plan on attending the Ohio cichlid fish club in Cleveland soon. It's every first Friday of the month at 8pm and I've never gone but I really want to. It's like a hour away from here. I actually live in olena but NO1 knows where it is so I just say Norwalk lol. Idk i'm a hour south of clevland I guess. Half hour from sandsky/cedar point :)

A:  Well, I found out the Norwalk A.S. is in Massachussets, a l-o-n-g way from Norwalk, OH.  You should enjoy the Cleveland A.S.  LA

Vincent Liew, Malaysia, January 13, 2011
Hi Larry, How are you doing? Still enjoy going through your website..
Attached is a pic of the two severum that I am keeping. Can you make an educated guess of their sexes? Also attached is a pic of the chromide that I am keeping...

VL

VL

A:  You don't mention what age they are.  They both are quite colorful.  This usually denotes maleness.  Nice chromide.  LA

Vincent Liew, Malaysia, January 15, 2011
oh... i have them for 3 months already and they are now about 3 inches... you mentioned in your website that the male usually has more bluish traces on the cheek... the gold severum has less than the green one and less colorful, and the stripes on the green one is very much obvious most of the time... at what size can we safely determine their sex?

LA

A:  Your gold will have red stripes instead of the blue-green stripes on the male.  You can be more sure of their sexes at five inches.  LA

Steven Schnepp, January 14, 2011
About Bettas:
Don't worry, I'm not one of the hate-mail types. I have a question, and wondered if you might spare a moment or two to answer it.
I used to have a male betta and a small 3"-long plecostomus, both bought from Meijer's. I had the pleco first, and the tough little guy outlived the goldfish we bought with him. I got the betta about a year after that. They shared a tank with some mystery snails I acquired from an acquaintance about six months or so after the betta. Every once in a while we'd put a goldfish in there, and it would average six months or so (this betta was really even-tempered, he didn't attack 'em). The betta lived a good five years or so after we got him, including two years after being removed from his tank and put in a bowl by my stepmother, while the pleco died shortly after the betta's removal. The tank was one of those desktop tanks, maybe about four gallons. I was about seven when I first got them, twelve when the betta finally kicked the bucket, so I really didn't know much about how to really care for fish. I put a pinch of flakes (brand was TetraMin Tropical Flakes) twice daily, and I think the water got changed maybe twice. The pleco and the snails kept it clean (it didn't smell bad and the water was clear), and everyone involved seemed to be healthy-looking - but this was ten years ago, so I could have missed or forgotten something. The betta would react to someone's presence (in lieu of a mirror, I'd make faces at him to get him to flare up), and while pretty sedate didn't act like a sick animal. The pleco, being nocturnal, didn't show much activity during the day.
From what I've read recently, apparently I did just about everything wrong. Am I missing something here, or were those two just superfish?

A:  Probably super fish.  However, we've had many parents come in seeking replacements for bettas that died overnight.  (They wanted to replace the one that died before their kid discovered it mssing.)  Your parents might have some 'splaining to do.  LA
PS:
Hate-mail types keep it interesting.

Brian, January 14, 2011
Hi larry, I've emailed you a few times about my one green anole. Well I bought another one, a very small one. I though I sexed it as a female, and the two got along great, they would lay on each other and always be by each other. I even though they were mating. But now the "female" has gotten bigger, and she appears to have a dewlap. The two chase each other, though I've never seen them "fight". They still will be ok by each other for a while. I looked for the 2 scales under my confirmed males tail, and they are very prominant. When I look under the other ones tail, I can't really tell if the scales are there. They look like they definitely could be. Also, sometimes they both have a raised portion on their back, and I was told only males have this? What do I do if they are both males?

A:  Relax.  Even if they are both males, it is highly unlikely they will fight to the death.  By the way, if you see the larger one grabbing the other one by the back of the neck, the one grabbed is likely a female.  LA

Susan Kincaid, January 14, 2011
Hi.  I really like your site.  Very helpful.
I would like to ask you a question, please.  When growing super worms what temperature is 'room temp' that you recommend?  Our home is only around 70 degrees.
BIG QUESTION.  My superworms seem to be pupating too soon.  They are NOT getting long and fat before pupating.  I am feeding them chicken mash, oatmeal, and bran.  Potatoes, lettuce and carrots for moisture are used.  Please advise.  I know I must be doing something wrong.

A:  You are sooo lucky, 70 degrees is exactly room temperature  Lock in your thermostat.  Now for your second question.  I need more info to make sure you have superworms and not just large mealworms.

  LA

Superworms morph into a red beetle.  Regular mealworms morph into a black beetle.  LA
PS  It sounds like you are keeping yours under fine conditions.

Susan Kincaid, January 15, 2011
Hi Larry:  Thanks so much for a reply back.  The beetles start out blonde then get red and eventually get dark, pretty black.  They are about 1/2 inch long.  A few are an inch long.
The superworms I began with were huge and did not resemble mealworms in size or color.  They were darkly banded and very HUGE.  Are the large mealworms darkly banded?  Maybe I was improperly sold those by a merchant...??  Makes me wonder.
I also wonder if they were large mealworms fed some kind of horomone to make them resemble superworms, if that is possible.  I have been working on this breeding experiment ALL winter and hope it was not a waste of time.  Looks like I will need to start completely over pending your identification.  Thanks again for your help...

A:  Can you send me some samples in an envelope marked "please hand stamp?"  LA

Susan Kincaid, January 15, 2011
Dear Larry:  You are an impressive guy!  Thanks for getting back to me with this research offer.
Yesterday afternoon I took live samples of all three stages to a long time pet shop owner here who identified them as mealworm stages.  It is pretty confusing to me as I know I began with these mondo huge superworms and am left to think A. mealworms were mixed in or B.growth hormone had been used on the larger mealworms to sell them to me.  C. I was sold King mealworms.  It's pretty strange.
I may send some to you anyway, but don't want to waste your time.  Starting the breeding process over from scratch seems the only smart thing for me to do at this point.
I have breeding pairs of ornate box turtles, etc. that love the superworms.  This is a difficult species to keep healthy with the complex diet they require.  Rather than grow broke purchasing them while I expand my high quality breeding and expand/learn it seemed smart to begin raising the superworms which go here for 8-10 cents each in coastal central Florida.  Where is bran sold?  Feed stores?  Have a happy Sunday.

A:  No problemo.  I had a happy Sunday.  Saw "Season of the witch" and liked it.  You can get bran in most feed stores.  I forget whether it comes in 25# or 50# bags.  The bag is huge.  LA

Cole Byerly, Midland, TX, January 15, 2011
Hello Larry let me me first thank you for your very informative site. I have a female marble colored convict but I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find a male. I do however have a normal male convict and a male pink convict and was wondering which one is more likely to father marbled offspring? Thank you,

A:  The normal grey color is dominant.  All his offspring will be grey unless one of his parents was a pink.
Your best bet is to use your pink male.  Pink is recessive to grey.  I don't know if it's more or less dominant over marble.  I've never line bred the marbles.  Keep me posted.  LA

jacob hadley, January 15, 2011
what would be my gerbil's favorite treat? im trying to get him to come to me.

A:  They like peanuts, rolled oats, and sunflower seeds.  They probably like other nuts also.  Put the treat in your hand.  Put your hand in front of his open cage door.  He should figure it out.  LA

Elizabeth Siebert, Michigan, January 15, 2011
I bought a bullshark, bought tropical fish food and it never ate, it swam in circles for an entire day, and died a week later.  I just recently bought another I am hoping you can help me figure this out.  What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance

A:  You probably did nothing wrong.  Bull sharks do like salt in their water -- more as they grow older.  Don't get another one.  They grow into very large catfish that needs lots of salt.  LA

Justin Caron, January 15, 2011
Hi. I just wanted to say I love your site. It has the best and most information I have seen anywhere online. I was wondering if you think a Halloween crab could live with several other hermit crabs in a 20 gallon breeder tank. The hermit crabs are all different sizes and the Halloween crab is about three inches long. Would he kill the others? or do they need to be  alone? Thanks

A:  You probably can't keep them together.  Halloween crabs live along the shore in shallow water.  Hermit crabs live on the land -- even in trees.  It's possible to mix them but very difficult.  LA

Kyle Morris, Ames, IA, January 15, 2011
Hello, I was wondering if you had any African mudskippers in stock, and if not are you expecting any soon? I live and Ames and just wanted to check before making a trip over.

LA

A:  Sorry.  All we can get these days are the Vietnam mudskippers.  We sold out last Thursday.  We'll order more for next Friday.  Call first.  LA

Nick Vanwychen, Canada, January 16, 2011
Do you ship to Canada?

A:  No.  LA

Jordan Varner, January 17, 2011
My Java moss is already growing!:) but i just realized that one of my baby platies' spine is very bent and rigid. What should i do about this strange deformity?

A:  Not much can be done.  Most people cull out defective fish and feed them to their larger fish.  LA

Jordan Varner, January 18, 2011
I fed it to my betta

A:  Good move.  LA

Max Angle, January 17, 2011
I am looking for Larry, I was curious what size container you use to raise your Madagascar Hissers on your link on the site?

LA

KK

A:  10-gallon tank, but I sold all my Madagascars to Carolina Biological Supply.  I've converted over entirely to the dubia roaches.  I keep them in a 10 also.   LA

LA
When they get this crowded, you'll see no babies.  Time to cull the herd.

A:  Actually we had two 10-gallon tanks.  One out front on the counter and one back in the fish room.  No heater in either.  They do need something to live under.  Both bred fairly well.  LA

Max Angle, January 18, 2011
What temperature was the area you kept them in though because at times its cool in the room I keep them and I'm kind of curious why some seem to be dying do you know why?

A:  I never recorded their temperature because they bred like cockroaches.  They were fed various foods over time and the temperature bounced up and down.  They were fed on an irreglar schedule and ditto on the water.  And they still bred like roaches.  I have no idea why yours do not reproduce.  LA

hello, I was reading your web page and saw african pygmy mice and striped grass mice mentoned on your mouse page, I have been looking for them for some time though I am sure there's none around anymore, I was wondering when the pics were taken and when was the last time you had some in or saw some? and have you ever had in dormice or jerboas thanks

A:  I took the pics in 2003.  The last time I saw the spiny mice was 2005.  I've never had a dormouse.  We have had jerboas but haven't had them for a few years.  LA

Hi...my grandkids and I really enjoy our time together interacting with all my pets...but, I'm new to reptiles.  I'm just now really getting interested in SOME of them.  I have a dumb question...how badly can a bearded dragon bite?  Also, where is the best place to get one...on-line, pet shop, etc?

DB

A:  I've never been bitten by a bearded dragon or know anyone who has.  By the way, your grandkid is cute.  LA

Tesni Clepper, Cincinnati, OH, Nov 30, 2011 (received Jan 19)January Hi, I have been treating my weather/dojo loach for an ulcerated looking open sore on its lower tail area, using a natural medicine I bought at the petsore. However, I noticed (after its last escape into the main aquarium) a few other smaller sores of a similar variety on the top of the body near the head and also on the side in the pectoral area. The sore on the caudal peduncle area is the largest, and the skin around it seems slightly swollen. However, it behaves normally and eats regularly. The sore on the tail seems to be healing, but now there are these others. I have no idea what's up with this fish. It is not attack by tank mates; most are placid barbs, tetras, or livebearers who do not bother the loach, and the sores are very round in shape, not like a ragged bite wound. No parasites appear to be present, and no other fish have these symptoms. I have not introduced any new fish for a long time, so I don't think it is introduced disease. Could you offer me any assistance into the nature of these wounds and their healing? I would like to help my loach; he is one of my favorites. Thank you,

A:  I don't know of any medication that would cure him.  Any medication would probably exceed his replacement cost.  I would terminate him humanely and replace him a month later in case some unknown pathogen lurks in the water.  LA

I enjoy your detailed pages. I have a heavily-planted 29G. I'd like to add red platys for color. If I add one male & two females, can I avoid overpopulation? I don't care if the platys or bloodfin tetras eat the fry. Thanks.

A:  Platys have 30 fry every six weeks.  That will give you 60 new platys every six weeks.  The best way to guarantee no overpopulation is to add two angelfish.  LA
