Hi Larry! I really would appreciate some advice on how to get rid of grey hazy water. I read your page on it and have done about 3 partial changes on the 20 gallon tank but the water is still hazy and the pH of the water drops like a rock even though it comes out of the tap a tad above 7. I know yours comes out much higher. I have had an under gravel filter in that tank for a few years now and I'm wondering if maybe the filter is decomposing somehow?  I'm getting heavy milky colored stuff when I use the gravel vac and have even seen it come out of the filter tubes before.
The tank had a heavy algae build up a few weeks ago before I scraped the glass and discarded lots of java moss. I also messed up and cleaned the sponge filters and I should have left them alone. It was a dumb mistake. I have 14 neons, 7 velvet swordtails and two cory cats in the tank. Filtration is with one power filter, 1 UG and 2 sponge filters. Normal temps but the pH is a little above 6 which is probably safer for the fish at the moment.
Should I relocate the fish, pull up the UG filter and clean again and fill with aged water to help cycle quickly or just keep doing the partial changes everyday until the water clears up? Thanks

A:  Sounds like you have diatoms (a floating micro-algae).  Water changes encourage its growth.  Usually it's green or tan, but your symptoms sound like diatoms.  Look for a product called AlgaeFix.  If it clears up in two days you have diatoms (or used to).  If it doesn't clear up, call me in the morning.  LA

Bob, Virginia, January 22, 2011
I'll find the AlgaeFix today and try that. Couldn't hurt. I really didn't notice much problem until last weekend when I added fish to the 20 gallon that I bought from PetsMart. Some of the water from the fish bag got in my tank and I started seeing haziness in the water right after that which grew worse over time. I tried the stuff to clear up the aquarium and that backfired and made things worse so I had to change the water shortly thereafter. The fish are fine and seem to be loving the hazy water, but I'm not. The water looks clean and I can see from one end of the tank to the other easily but the haziness just won't go away. Can diatoms affect the pH and cause it to drop? I usually don't keep tabs on the pH that much because the fish seem less bothered than I am when the pH is on the low side.
I can see lots of small particles of something floating all through the water when the air is on with the sponge filters and UG filter running but when turned off things settle but the water stays hazy either way. Really weird.
Well, time to read up on diatoms. So you don't think that the UG filter could be deteriorating in some way causing the problem. I think I need to probably check the airstones because now I'm getting suspicious about them because they haven't been changed in ages. I know those long airstones fall apart over time. I'm thinking about buying a powerhead for that tank. I never bothered before because it's only a 20 gallon tank. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

A:  I doubt diatoms would decrease the pH.  I'd think they absorb carbon dioxide and increase the pH.  I don't think UG filters deteriorate.  I've had several dozen for at last 35 years.  In our area, lime clogs up airstones in six or eight weeks.  I just take them off.  The air tubes also eventually clog with lime where the bubbles come out.  I use a piece of technical equipment to remove 5he lime (a paperclip).  Sorry for the late reply.  LA

Bob, Virginia, January 23, 2011
Dear Dr. Arnold, I bought the Algae Fix and gave the 20 gal two tiny doses 8 hrs apart and things are looking better already. I'll give it another dose later today.  I bought one of those Aqueon Water Changers and I can't get it to siphon out anything. I've tried doing what the instructions say and still no go. If you have the time to give me some input on this one it will be much appreciated!
In the meantime I'm gonna search Google for awhile and try for an answer there. Thanks

A:  I'll have to check into the Aqueon water changer,  I've never used one.  LA

Bob, Virginia, January 24, 2011
Thanks again for helping me with the hazy tank problem. The AlgaeFix worked great! The tank was better after one day of treatment and it's nearly clear now! I've had this problem for over a week before I tried your idea.

A:  Once in a while I get one right.  LA

Hello! I'm from the Wisconsin area and I know your site says you do not ship pets. But I was wondering if you would happen to know of a location that can or a place in Wisconsin that would have them? I'm looking for a few helix for a terrarium. Thanks!!

A:  Your Federal government at work -- you need a permit to ship snails across state lines.  You can get Packs of 25 from Carolina Biological Supply.  But probably not until it warms up.  LA

Udi Yogev, January 22, 2011
hello, Can you help me plz ? Are the fish in the pic are flower horn ?
is yes so whitch type ?
Thabk you

A:  Basically, I don't know.  "Flowerhorn" usually refers to a hybrid between two different species of cichlids.  Who knows who's crossing what types of fish these days?  Your fish look like they belong somewhere in the archocentrus family, but I have no ides where.   I'm sorry I couldn't reproduce your photos.  They were quite nice.  LA

Aftab Lokhandwala, Pune City, India, January 24, 2011
Just a while ago, one of my discus died. He was fine today morning, and ate his food as usual. Within a few hours however, he just died. His eyes bloated up, and I have never seen this with any other discus. He was living quite happily for the past two years. He did not show any parasitic infection symptoms. I am totally at a loss, and so is the local pet store guy.
We keep the tank clean, and maintain an optimum temperature.
I think something may have gone awry in the tank, as one of the plecos was also swimming with its tail upwards. This particular discus also seemed to lose color, which I have not seen with my other discus. He was not really old or large for a discus.
I have attached a photograph of the dead fish. It would be really helpful if you could tell me what is causing them to die, and how to prevent it.
Another small question I want to ask is, is it okay to keep two flowerhorn in the same tank, with a suitable partition? I have observed that a flowerhorn I thought would never grow a hump has suddenly got a big helmet on his head after putting him with another flowerhorn, with partition. My guess is, competition enhances their growth. But not being an expert I cannot be too sure. Thank you.

AL

A1:  Namaste.  Sorry, I can't tell what went wrong by looking at your dead discus.  But because of the strange actions of your pleco, you should have your water tested.
A2:  You can put two flowerhorns in the same tank if you keep them separated with a divider.  If you have a large enough tank, you may not need the divider.  I think your flowerhorn developed his "helmet" because he reached sexual maturity.  LA

I lost this letter by hitting the wrong button.  It had to do with turning a female hissing roach upside down to photograph her egg case.  He said it stressed them.

LA

A:  Relax.  She was climbing up the glass.  I didn't turn her upside down.  She crawled up the glass on her own.  Trust me.  I would never stress a female roach.  LA

James B Hughes, January 25, 2011
I have been researching on your site for some time now. I looked at your pleco pics, and didn't see one like mine, so I am emailing you a picture of it. This pleco is just a baby, but she is a long "laced" finned albino bushynosed pleco. Enjoy the pic.

A:  I enjoyed your pleco picture but I can't copy it and use it.  It's w-a-y too big.  LA

Bob, Virginia, January 26, 2011
Hi Larry, I put in a power head for the UG in the 20 long tank. Lots of crud came up from the intake tube and got the tank cloudy again. Too much power for that filter maybe? It's only a small 160 GPH Maxi Jet -600. How many inches of gravel should be covering the filter? I've only used airstones before but I do use a larger power head in the 55 on one of the intake tubes.
Should I not use the power head in the 20 and just stick with airstones? I have jumbo neons and swordtails with two cory cats and nothing else.
Thanks

A:  Airstones work fine.  In the meantime, it sounds like you need to vacuum your gravel (Gravel Vacuums).  LA

Hubert Zientek, Poland, January 26, 2011
Dear Larry, Is there any possibility that within a coming month you could take 1-2 pictures of rosy red minnows in high resolution? Please, write me a sentence that those pictures, which you have sent me earlier are made by you and that you give me your permission to print them in my book. What kind of acknowledgements you wish? best,

A:  Well I finally found the instruction book that came with my camera.  I couldn't figure out how to change the "resolution."  In Nikonese they call it "quality."  I have adjusted my camera accordingly and will send you new photos in a couple days.  Use them with my permission.  As for credits, just add my website aqualandpetsplus.comLA

A:  January 27, 2011
Bad news, Hubert.  My computer cannot read the larger format pictures.  You have my permission to use the earlier pictures as you see fit.  LA

Hi, do you sell pond plants such as water hyacinth, hornwort, wholesale pricing.? I have a nursery business and am looking for a new source for pond plants. I am not seeing a way to order online. Can you get back?

A:  Sorry.  We don't sell anything online.  You can probably Google up several sources.  LA

Melinda Dillon, Sydney, Australia, January 26, 2011
Hi there, Am complete beginner, living in Sydney, Australia.  Shonky pet shop sold a friend a tank for my kids with 4 goldfish and 2 swordtails in it.  After finding your site I have bought another tank and separated the goldfish and swordtails, unfortunately two goldfish have died.  From reading about the swordtails on your website have purchased two more females for my male bringing total to one male and three females, but he doesn't seem to like the two new ones, is this common? They look very unhappy and just swim away from him and try to hide, he seems much gentler with his original girl.  Should I take them back to the shop, or maybe take him back? The local aquarium keep telling me to only feed them once every two days but they seem hungry?  I'm doing my best and seem to keep getting different messages from everywhere, I want my fish to be happy!  Can you help me?

A:  I like to feed my fish lightly twice a day.  Don't worry.  Your males and females will adjust and learn to get along with each other.  LA

Right about here my computer slowed way down and turned pink. So  I had to delete a couple hundred emails to let it breathe again.  They were unread ones (mostly ads plus cool stuff from Jillian Michaels) that I probably "needed" to read but not enough to actually read.  I'll delete another 100 tomorrow.  Hopefully no real peoples' emails were deleted in the process.  LA

Hi Larry Arnold, I have some banjo catfish and was wondering if you would like some photos of them? Kathy Potts said that you probably would like some. I even caught him shedding so i have some photos of him doing that and also have some photos of him eating out of my hand. And i also took a picture of them as a " family photo " and sorry i'm having some technical difficulties. My email won't let me upload more photos, so I'll send them separately . Kind Regards

A:  Your pictures are too big to send thru your email.  I can't access them on my computer either.  On my 20-inch monitor, I can see less than a 9th of your picture.  My computer can't capture it and let me publish it on my web site.  Can you set your camera to take smaller pictures?  LA
PS  Kathy gets me into all kinds of trouble.

Ruan Maritz, Prince George, BC, Canada, January 27, 2011
Here i made them very small can you see them now?

RM

A:  You betcha.  The medium one came thru best.  LA

Amy McArter, Kalona, IA, January 27, 2011
Hey, I have an albino cory and recently noticed a spot of red on his head. My first thought was that he injured himself. few days later a fresh bright red spot with what looked like fresh tissue hanging.  now my thought was someone else injured him. I put him isolation and now i noticed a red spot on the tip of his tail.  Injury  or illness???  Any idea???

A:  Putting him in isolation is a good start.  When I don't know what the problem is, I'd treat with Clout.  LA

Kyle Burke, January 27, 2011
Can you make a neon tetra care sheet with info of how to breed them
I would like the breeding info to be as clear as your cory cat breeding section.

A:  Short answer, no.  Long answer, no.  I've never bred them myself.  I've only known one Iowan to successfully breed them -- a Chinese professor who teaches at Central College in Pella.  Neon eggs are very sensitive to light.  Spawn them like Tetras, Spawn and protect the eggs from direct light.  Lots of luck.  LA

Lauren, January 27, 2011
Hello, I want to start off with saying that you have very helpful information on your website and from what I saw, I love the pictures you have included.  There is one request I do want to make though and it is pretty minor.  See, a few friends and I have noticed that there has been a dramatic increase in people reporting Metabolic Bone Disease in their crested geckos without knowing the cause of it.  The first thing we ask these people is what are they feeding their gecko and 99% of the answers we get is "baby food."  Baby food should be fed hardly ever (never is better...), even if it is the meaty kind.  The fruits and vegetable ones typically have too much sugar and the meaty kinds don't have proper nutrition for the crested geckos.
We have also asked these people where they get their info from and the majority of the answers state that they found it online.  So we are trying to contact anyone associated with websites that have baby food listed under the food options to try and get them to change it.  Feeding crested geckos is so much easier than it used to be. Just a bit of Crested Gecko Diet mixed with water and you are good to go. Complete nutrition.  Calcium dusted crickets can be added to the diet once or twice a week if the person is looking for the gecko to gain some weight (or have a nice treat :)
I will say that I do love your website. It is very visually appealing and does have a ton of very helpful and need to know info. Thanks,

A:  Excellent info.  I'm adding it to my crested gecko page.  LA
PS  I would have added it anyway without all the buttering up.

Natalie Filiou, January 27, 2011
Hi, Noticed you have tons of info/experience per peacock eels- I wanted to get two for my 3 foot, 35 gallon tank, but been told should only get one.  Is this true?  I did read that they get to 6" in captivity, but can get to 12" in the wild.  My tank is empty right now as I'll be buying the eels in March once the water is cycled, etc. Thanks in advance for any feedback,

LA

A:  If it were my tank I'd add six peacocks, but I'd go slow.  Add two and wait a week or two before adding two more.  They're on the picky-eater list with me.  Blackworms and frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp trip their trigger.  Add a quart of water siphoned from the UG filter of a healthy African cichlid tank to speed up your cycling process.  LA

Kyle Burk, Iowa, Des Moines, IA, January 28, 2011
Can you make a care sheet on the scissor tail rasbora?

LA
One of the critters I'm working with.

A:  I could, but right now I'm concentrating on snails and shrimps.  From the retail price of scissortail rasboras, I conclude they are fairly easy to spawn.  I might get into rasboras in a few months (after I figure out all the stats on today's snails and shrimps).  LA

Ned Draheim, January 28, 2011
Larry-- I am trying Infusoria with a batch of beta fry rather than brine shrimp right off the bat--how long do you feed them infusoria? how much per day? I have 2 cultures going in gal milk jugs started from aquarium water-rabbit pellets and hard boiled egg yolk. Is that ok? do i need to add more rabbit pellets and egg yolk to keep it going?
Also, do you have any microworm cultures for sale? Seems like that would be easier than raising brine shrimp. Thanks,

A:  Give them a pint a day for three weeks.  I doubt you'll need to re-feed your infusoria culture.  Discontinue after three weeks.  Add in newly hatched brine shrimp and/or microworms during their second week.  We have microworm cultures for sale @ $3.  LA

Mackenzie Legler, January 28, 2011
Hello, I am looking for a Teddy Bear hamster. Do you happen to sell them? Thank you!

A:  Yes, we sell teddy bear hamsters (and their food, cages, and water bottles).  Call 283-0300 to see if we have them in stock today and what are their prices.  LA

Susan Asplund, January 28, 2011
Thanks for all the great information. We are just starting out with Bettas
and need some advice. We have a nice size 2 gallon tank with a filter that
doesn't put out a lot of turbulence and some snails. Plastic plants, purple
rocks, your basic office desk type aquarium. It is out of the sun but
probably cold -- we are in Minnesota. Two questions really - how often should we be changing the water and should we add some kind of heater?
My son is 8 and very enthusiastic about the whole thing. He has autism and
watches the fish and snails as a calming technique so I need to do this
right. Thanks.

A:  Bettas prefer to live in the 75 to 80 neighborhood.  Often they do quite well at 72.  Feed yours very lightly.  Change the water once a week or whenever it gets cloudy or smelly.  Use aged water which you've set aside for a few days in a bucket or gallon jugs.  I like to watch fish also.  Some studies have shown that besides relaxing observers, aquariums also lower the observer's blood pressure.  That's why you see them in so many doctor and dentist offices.  LA

Joe Thomas, Dayton, OH, January 28, 2011
Would you happen to know where I can get some giant colombian ramshorn snails?  Thanks.

A:  I have not seen those snails for almost four years.  Since they are actually part of the apple snail gang (that devours plants like we eat M&Ms), perhaps the feds put the kibosh on them also?  LA

aquastonedragon, January 29, 2011
Howdy, once again I have another question. I currently have a female betta in my 20H and she's been there awhile. My LFS has a betta called a super delta betta (or supreme delta can't quite remember atm), I was wondering if I could but him in with her or would he kill her?

LA

A:  Excellent question.  No guarantees on betta interaction.  On average, he will try to spawn her.  She'll probably coöperate since you've had her awhile.  In a small tank (2 to 5 gallons) he might kill her.  In your 20H, they'll likely get along..  LA

Linda Upton, UK, January 29, 2011
hi, I'm in the uk, wanted to add to your informative page on black ghost knifefish. I've had mine around 2 years & he's about 8-9 inches, I've noticed the last 6 months or so he seems to be growing "wider" now rather than longer! He lives with 2 corys & a dojo loach, they get on fine, i originally had half a dozen or more male guppies which he never bothered with, but when they died off and just one was left on it's own (i felt sorry for it being lonely, lol) and introduced another 8 - by the following morning only 2 were left, and over the next 2 nights they were all eaten, even the existing original one! So i know not to put any new fish in there! Food wise, his fave is bloodworm, prefers the frozen variety but will eat dried. He grazes on leftover flake food and is also partial to algae wafers, even coming out of his cave when the light is on to pick one up in his mouth and take back into his cave. He will butt dojo loach out of the way for his food. Dojo likes the physical contact and thinks it is a game, the black ghost never gets aggressive with him but will firmly push him out of the way! He is an amazing swimmer, the control of his direction is totally precise in judging distances and angles. I recently upgraded my tank, which was a shock for me when he seemed extremely poorly to the point i thought he was going to die, the top of his head and around the eyes became coated in a white mucous covering, he bobbed around rather than swam & floated on the top of the plants. After a few days in complete 24-hour darkness he thankfully recovered completely and has been just fine ever since, and i can only assume he maybe had an "accident" mis-judging his cave entrance which caused him a small injury which took time to heal & accustom to new surroundings and distances. Does anyone know how to tell the sex of this fish? i always call him a "he" but it would just be nice to know. i also call my dojo loach a "he" but i know it is a female!

A:  Thanks for your report.  I'm adding your personal observations to my bgk page.  I don't personally know how to sex a bgk.  No doubt someone out there in the webisphere does.  LA

Bill Townsend, Idaho, January 30, 2011
Dear Larry, I live in idaho and am new to the aquarium scene. I was hoping to find out some information on water beetles. As in if they are ok to put in an aquarium with community fish or not. I can't really find any info saying not to, but that doesn't make it ok i guess. The water beetle in question is about an inch and a half long and was found in a pet store feeder aquarium. Its tank mates would be a few four inch bala sharks and a few danios of the same size as the balas. The beetle is very neat looking but i want to keep my existing fish safe. Thanks for any time you put forth to help. If pictures would help please let me know.

LA

A:  If your water beetls looks like this guy, I would not put him in with my fish.  I wouldn't even try to hold him in my hand.  I've been nailed by them before.  Lots of water beetles prey on smaller fish.  LA

Barb Motter, January 30, 2011
Thought I would give you an update on the Methusela Raphael catfish I wrote you about in 2008. He is still hanging on now and should be 28 years old now. He is the only fish in the 20 gallon tank. My two old goldfish finally expired. Everyday I check when I feed him and he always comes out but that is the only time I see him. He wedges himself into a castle I have in there, and that's where he stays. Don't know if he is coming out at night or not. I am trying to find someone to take him but they all fear he will die if we move him. Would really like to get rid of tank. Will let you know if and when he goes.

A:  Now that's a really old Raphael catfish.  LA

Do we order via email or is there an order form online ?????? Who do you use for shipping aquarium plants to Canada????Or do you ship to Canada???? Thanks Vic

We're looking for a tiger salamander.  We would love a tadpole in order to teach our son about metamorphosis if possible, otherwise, a young tiger salamander would suffice.  Do you carry any?  If you do not, can you recommend a source to get a tadpole sent overnight?  We are located in California's San Francisco Bay Area.  Thank you in advance for your time.
Cheers.

A:  We have tiger salamanders but cannot send them to you.  You may or may not know that California has some restrictive laws about what their citizens can bring in.  If I remember correctly, salamanders and newts can't be shipped to California.  LA

Is it safe to house a Florida ivory millipede with green tree frogs, fire belly toad, and green aholes?

A:  Yes, since they are vegetarians.  Is that last word a typo?  I've never kept any aholes in captivity.  LA
PS
I had to leave your typo in.  I love it.

Hello. I wanted to double-check the price I paid for a 90 gallon aquarium and glass top.
I ordered the aquarium from Mike, based on a sale that was on.  The
price he quoted was $250.  I don't know if that included the glass tops
or not.  When I picked up the aquarium on January 20 Mike wasn't
working, so I dealt with Dave.  He couldn't find any notes on the price,
but he thought it was $255, plus the glass top for $52.  I thought maybe
I'd misunderstood Mike, so I paid that amount.
I wanted to double-check that I paid the right price.  I don't want to
underpay, but at the same time I don't want to overpay either. Thanks.

A:  Exactly like Dave, I have no idea what Mike arranged.  Call him tomorrow.  He works on Tuesdays.  LA

On your Arowana and Shovelnose Catfish page there is not much info on compatability. I wanted to know if they would be compatible in a well planted aquarium? Is there anything else that can go with them? Thank You.
P.S. Awesome website! My favorite, I go on it every day.

A:  I've never kept arowanas and shovelnose catfish together until maturity.  I think they would pretty much ignore each other as long as you give them plenty of food.  Unfortunately, your well lanted aquarium will not remain well planted.  LA

Dear Larry, How are you?
Several messages without any response, hopping you are well.
Hold enough stock of cladophora, once interested in the present time
Please contact me. Best regards.

A:  Good morning Ahmed.  I am fine.  Thank you for asking.  But as I replied earlier, it would take me several lifetimes to sell 10,000 cladophora.  Your pictures were great.  But I just can't sell that many.  LA
