Great site! Lots of useful knowledge to be found. I'm actually in TX, but you seem to know your stuff so maybe you can answer a question. I've got a murderer in my fish tank, and I'm trying to figure out who dunnit. I had 3 tiger barbs, 3 silver dollars, 2 mystery snails, 2 African dwarf frogs, 2 mollies and a pleco in a tank. Things went well for a while. Then, one of the mollies turned up dead...eyes eaten out of its head. I thought it might've been the pleco. A few days later, one mystery snail disappeared literally overnight. Nothing left but its shell. Another day or so, the other snail was gone. Again, I thought the pleco might've done it...until I found it dead in the tank with its eyes eaten out. This left the tigers, the silver dollars, one molly and 2 frogs. I've gotten another pleco since, and one of the frogs was stripped to the bone when it got its foot stuck in the intake. (I've wrapped it in hose to prevent it from happening again.) It's been months and no other deaths have occurred. I've always fed em all a good bit, maybe too much to keep them from fighting over food. Any idea who was to blame? I'm thinking maybe the tigers? But they left one molly, the dollars, the new pleco and the frog alone...strange critters. Thanks for any info A: Plecos are not often attackers. Once in a while they'll suck a hickie on a slow moving, flat-sided fish. And if a fish dies overnight and falls to the bottom, the pleco will dine on filet d'soir. But they're not built to eat the eyeballs out. Tiger barbs are well known nippers when kept in small groups. But I suspect your fish and snails just died and their tank mates helped themselves to the soft parts.

Hi. I want to know how many gallons does 2 bearded dragons need? A: I'm assuming you mean how much room do they need. Not much when they're little. Quite a bit more as they mature -- especially if you wind up with two males or plan to breed them. I strongly encourage you to read one of the many books on bearded dragons before you buy any bearded dragons.. LA

I haven't emailed you in a quite a while! Well, I also haven't had questions, until now, but before that, I'll tell you about some updates on my tank. My plecostomus is alive and doing quite well actually, unlike the other one I had a while back. I haven't had a fish death since March and all my other fish look great a little bigger. I ended up buying an African Butterfly fish since I was tempted, and he's pretty active for his species. So the question I wanted to ask was about an old 10 gallon I have in my garage. It used to house my sister's hamsters a good 7 years ago, but it's just been sitting there forever. I really wanted to use it as a breeding tank since I'm a new breeder and I'd like to have more Red-Eye Tetras or Harlequin Rasboras in my tank. It also saves me some money, and helps me with breeding experience. I'm aware that live blackworms help ALOT and I'm lucky to get them for free from my buddy at the LFS. So I'm wondering, if it is possible to use my 10 gallon, how should I clean it? I was also wondering that since it'll only be used as a breeding tank, can it do without a filter and have a replacement of snails instead? Thanks for your help. A: Cool beans on your successful breeding program.
But you'll probably have to toss that used hamster tank.
Hamsters strip out the Silastic seals in their tanks -- at least
they did in the 80 or so I've kept them in over the last several
decades. LA

Firstly, I Got To Thank You For Having Such A Great Website. It Provided Almost All The Information I Need. But The Information You Provided On The Snakehead Page Is Pretty General On The Red Snakehead As You Called It. Most Of Us Called It The Giant Snakehead (Channa Micropeltes), The Locals Called It 'Toman'. It Grows Up To 1 m Long. While Other Snakeheads Such As The Dwarf Snakehead (Channa Gachua) Stays Small, About 20 cm Max. I Hope That You Could Provide Information On The Other Species. Just Some Facts I Think Would Be Interesting For You To Know: The Favourite Food Of Snakeheads Are Catfishes. In Singapore, Juvenile Snakeheads Are Sold Here As Feeder Fishes, SG$2 Per 20 -- Usually As Food For Arowana. Giant And Common Snakeheads Are Also Valued For Medicinal Value, It Is Reported That Eating It Would Be Good For Healing Bodily Wounds, Thus Recommended For Post-Operation Patients. I Currently Own 3 Species Of Snakeheads. Common Snakehead (Channa Striata) X1 (28 cm), Giant Snakehead (Channa Micropeltes) X22 (4-5cm) And Eye-Spot Snakehead (Channa Pleurophthalma) X2 (7-8cm) . Snakeheads Like The Common One Don't Exactly Like CleanWater. When I Put Mine In Clean Water, It Refuses To Eat. In Singapore, They Are Usually Found In Drains And Canals. While The Giant Snakeheads Prefers Cleaner Water In Ponds And Reservoirs Attached Is The Photo Of My Common Snakehead, And 2 Photos Of My Friends' Catfish Bait After Being Ripped By A Giant Snakehead
A: Thanks for the additional info on snakeheads. I'm adding it to my snakehead page. We cannot keep snakeheads any more. So I won't be adding input of my own. Another case of our government protecting us from ? At least they're trying, sometimes very trying. LA

Just checking out your care sheets and on the mantis page you have placed the wrong information. Contrary to what you have stated a female mantis has six segments and the male has eight not the other way round. My ghost mantis has laid four egg sacs so far and she has six segments I know she is a female.. Just telling you so you can correct your mistake so you don't carry on giving out the wrong information. A: You're right. I described them exactly backwards. Thanks for the correction. I've added it to my web page. LA

I was wondering if knight anoles are supposed to be thin? I just purchased my first knight anole who looks skinny. Also, I want to know if two females can live in the same enclosure? Thanks
P.S. Awesome site!
A: They're not supposed to be thin. Get some water into him. Soak him in warm water. Give him some large crickets. You may need to warm him up. If he's not responsive to food, Get him to a lizard vet. He may need a vitamin shot. He probably has parasites. Most lizards (and humans) do. I haven't had enough knights to say whether the females get along in small enclosures. If you go for two or more, give them plenty of room. LA

Hello this is an Emergency. My savanna monitor has very dull skin and has white things in his nose. I fed him and he ate a lot which I put rep-cal on the crickets. I'm very worried and can you give me an idea what could cause this? Please send me an idea immediately. A: Sounds like he's shedding. Soak him in a bowl of warm water. LA

Something is wrong with my girlfriend's cat. It's symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, sneezing and coughing. A person who ran a cat rescue center told us that the cat has a lung infection even though he didn't personally see the animal. He gave us penicillin for livestock and said it was ok. The animal is roughly 9 pounds. I don't think the penicillin is what the cat needs, and I don't think the man is telling the truth. I'm pretty sure the cat needs another kind of "cillin." If penicillin is the right medication can you tell me what dosage the cat would need? Thank you for your time. A: I haven't seen the cat or the recommended meds.
I'd recommend taking her cat to the vet. LA Kriaka Davis, CT,

"hate-filled diatribe" -- just my humble opinion. I don't like
