Hello, I'm planning on getting a mudskipper, but I've never had brackish water fish before. This plan is rushed, due to the fact that when I saw the mudskipper, having done research on it, I noticed the pet shop wasn't giving it its proper living conditions and needs. So I'm getting it because I feel sorry for it, plus they're awesome fish). I've looked around but I can't find the perfect salinity for mudskippers nor can I find how to even successfully make it. Please help me. I'm desperate, as I am getting it in two days, and I am actually a beginner in fish keeping (so I can't always understand the lingo) and I was going to start out easy with fresh water, but I feel sorry for the mudskipper that's not getting its requirements met. My mother had kept fish before and is going to help me, but she only specialized in catfish, so she doesn't know how to mix brackish water either. Great web site and any help at all would be more than helpful.
A: No prob. Brackish water comes in many variations. Just add one teaspoon of aquarium salt to each gallon of water. Voilà. You have made brackish water. Since you live in Johannesburg, you may even find an African mudskipper. We can only get the Vietnamese mudskippers in our area. See Mudskippers for more info. LA

Thank you so much. I need to know the PH levels are required and I'm thinking of adding some other fish to the tank like the dragon fish or something else that is compatible (I'm not really sure what is compatible with it). I'm going to use your kind of tank set up, with a ramp-like thing leading onto a log. any other info you think i should know? sorry if I'm being too full of questions, im really concerned that it will have the best environment. ill also try to find out what type it is, and send you a pic of it. Thanks. A: Do not mess with the pH. All those buffers tend to bounce around after 30 days. Since your mudskipper will spend minimum time in the water, his pH is probably a moot point. Mollies do great in a brackish tank. Many of the rainbowfish also like brackish water LA

Hello again. i got the mudskipper and found out he was a blue spotted mudskipper, which, if im correct, are herbivores (I found that off of certain web sites). I got him some special vegetarian food and he loved it. unfortunately he didnt make it. i dont know why he died, but i found him under one of his rocks. i am quite sad and wonder if it was something i did. im going to get more experience and one day i will get another mudskipper, as i have fallen in love with them. some pics of him and his tank(after the water conditioner) sorry that they're so blurry i took them with my phone.you have been very helpful and next time i need help with fish ill contact you. thank you so much.
A: Looks like we get the same little mudskippers here in Des Moines. I'd have to disagree with your research indicating they are herbivores. As the pics indicate, piscivore, vermivore, and insectivore would describe them better. LA

I love your site and information. I have been going to it for years and have made it my main reference for my aquariums.
I would like to get your opinion on a center piece fish for
my 30 gallon long aquarium. I have zebra danios, sunburst
mickey platys, glass cats, and kuhli loaches. I want to add
just one more fish (2.5 - 3 inches max) as a center piece
but keep finding reasons to believe that I have backed
myself into a corner. Gouramis would be too stressed from
the fast danios. A betta would go after the platys. I even
thought about an albino rainbow shark... but it might grow
to be too big. (My fish salesman said that he has noticed
that the albino is much less aggressive then the regular.)
Can you give me any recommendation?
A: Easy. Angalfish look great in nearly every tank. LA
A: Mantids like to hang from the top. Part of the problem could be the large crickets in the cage with your mantis. Adult crickets can bite pretty good -- speaking from personal experience -- and they work at night. Try giving him/her one cricket at a time. LA
Tyler Halderman, Fresno, CA, September 28, 2010
I just feel like he isn't going to eat. It always seems like he's trying to get out. I took out the big crickets and put in the smaller ones, but I still feel like he wont eat. how do i get him to eat or to calm down? A: Put a small lamp on him to warm him up a bit. That will speed up his metabolism and make him hungrier. This has been a poor year for mantids in our neck of the woods. None of our staff has seen even one mantis this year. LA
Tyler Halderman, Fresno, CA, September 29, 2010
I've seems a bunch around campus this year and my appartment. Before the summer I hatched about 200 and let 5 go in some rose bushes around campus. And kept 5 but they died. I fed them wingless fruit flies but idk why they died. But my room is fairly warm so idk if I need to get him a light. He seems really spastic. He always tries to fly outside whenever I take him out.
Oh... I've had this question for a while. R there such
things as pink praying mantids.?
A: Evidently there are some mantids (especially those in the tropics) that turn somewhat pink to camouflage themselves amongst pink and red flowers. I've never seen one myself. LA
Tyler Halderman, Fresno, CA, September 29, 2010
Ive only seen the pictures from google. So I caught another tan praying mantis and its pretty big. I made the mistake of putting it in the cage for too long. I had to leave for class and didn't have time to separate them, and it ate my green one. But the tan one looks pregnant and its really big. How do I tell if it's pregnant? A: Sounds like you no longer need to worry about your green mantis. The larger one is likely a female and wil lay an egg case (maybe more than one) on the lid of her cage. LA Matt Van Utrecht, New Sharon, IA,
September 24, 2010 A: Since you're only 55 miles away, it's easily worth the trip -- especially if you'll be in Des Moines anyway. We stlll have 300-400 tanks. LA Matt Van Utrecht, New Sharon, IA,
September 25, 2010 A: Probably closer to half a pound of emails. 95% of them are spam or semi-spam -- mainly ones I don't need to answer. Seems like every webmaster in the country (and others) wants to link with Aqualand. These links raise our rankings in the google searches. But I don't see much connection between most of them and pets. By the way, I printed your letter because it's like an ad for Aqualand. It's also known as "organic content" which also increases our google ranking. Some mostly link request samples:

hi, my name is mrs jyoti nitin karnik. i am from mumbai, india. i tried growing water hyacinth thrice, but failed every time....please help me as i am trying to build a mini pond ecosystem in my garden. thanks. regards
A: Water hyacinth grow incredibly easily -- so easy in fact that our state of Florida spent millions of dollars every year before they finally got them under control. The only thing that keeps them from carpeting Iowa is our winters. I can't think of any problems that would keep them from flourishing in your weather except if you treated your pond with some type of algae killer or copper-containing parasite treatment. LA

I've had my red-eared slider for seven or eight years now. I got it when it was about the size of a quarter or maybe a little bigger. I've never been 100% sure, but I'm fairly sure I have a male (never really cared, I only have one so it doesn't matter all that much). Well not ten minutes after putting the turtle back in the tank, I looked and there was some strange thing that looked like a peanut almost, and not the first idea where it came from. I've never had that before, and I don't have a vet anywhere around that sees reptiles and I can't find anything else online that tells me what this could be. Your page seems that you know turtles so maybe you have an idea of what is going on with my turtle. Any ideas you have would be great (it seems to be acting normally... so I really don't know). Thanks!
A: Male RES have long back toe nails. It sounds like you have a female and she laid an egg. The pictures above are eggs that were laid in water. They're nearly twice the size of an egg laid on land. LA
Kevin Zhang, St. Charles, IL, September 26, 2010
When is my platy gonna give birth? When i bought it it was already pregnant and it's been more than six weeks. What's wrong? A: All the livebearers are pregnant all the time. They have several litters in their bellies and pop them out about every six weeks. There's nothing wrong with her. She ate her babies. They're about the size of a fat eyelash (one with Mabelline on it). If you want to save livebearer fry, put your female in a well planted 10-gallon tank. Then feed her well. A diet of frozen brine shrimp will work well. Add a mystery snail or two to clean up any excess food. LA
Kevin Zhang, St. Charles, IL, September 28, 2010
ok, thanks, but it is still very fat. it looks like it's about to burst. My water temperature is room temperature. Could that be affecting it? A: Yes, temperature affects fish metabolism. Most aquariums are two degrees cooler than the ambient (room) temperature. If she is cool, it will take longer for her to have her kids. LA
Kevin Zhang, St. Charles, IL, September 30, 2010
My platy just gave birth today. There are 5 fry. I think there should be more but just to be safe I moved her. I don't know when she gave birth because I was at school so oh well. Anyway, they don't seem to be eating the crushed food i'm giving them. What should I do? A: Crush the food even smaller or get your hands on some frozen baby brine shrimp. Feed them very little several times a day. Add some snails to clean up the excess food. LA
Kevin Zhang, St. Charles, IL, October 1, 2010
They're not eating but I'm not sure cause I'm at school most of the day. What about live baby brine shrimp? If they get too big, I could always feed them to my other fish. Are they OK? Also, would they get sucked up by the filter? A: Your fry are probably snacking on the little animacules that inhabit every established aquarium. Live baby shrimp and frozen baby shrimp would both "disappear" into your filter. Frozen ones are easier than hatching live ones. Both are eagerly eaten by livebearer fry. LA

I have what look like some type of soft fleshy looking hive or cocoon of some sort that attaches itself on either the liner of my koi pond or on the stalks of my pond plants. I've never seen these before and have no idea what they contain, so I'm not sure if I should leave them or bid them adios! Have you heard of these or know of a site where I can look it up? Thanks, A: I'm stumped. Can you send me a photograph? LA
Jessica,
Chesapeake, VA, September 29,2010
The first one is attached to the liner and the second pic is after I removed it. This one feels a little harder than some of the other ones (I don't know how long it's been there) kind of soft yet crunchy? It looks hive like in structure but whereas beehives are concave this is more convex I think.
A: Mystery snails lay their eggs some two to three inches above the water. Otherwise the eggs would drown. Some two or three weeks later the eggs start hatching and the baby snailettes slide into the water. You can find more info under Snail, Mystery on our Table of Contents page. LA
Jessica, Chesapeake,
VA, September 29,2010
Thank you so much for finding that information for me! The mystery has been solved (no pun intended!) One last question...is it a single snail inside or a bunch of babies? and are too many bad for my pond? Also, how do you keep seed snails from over breeding? They are taking over my whole pond!!! We didn't even buy any they just showed up in there one day and have been multiplying ever since ~ they're worse than bunnies! Thanks again, A1: Your egg mass contains 100+ baby snails.
They are good for your pond.

HI there, Love your site and found it very infomative. But I noticed one of the photos on your website is being used http://sfca.webs.com/ at that website. Do you run that website as well or with someone? Thanks for your time. A: Good eye, dude. It took me a long time to spot it. No, I don't run that site. It appears to come from Australia. However, I don't care if they use a photo or two. LA

Hi, My oscar fish has been acting weird these last few days. I've had him for about a year and he's about 10 inches long. He's become really sluggish around his 55 gallon tank, opening and closing his mouth but won't eat anything, not even feeder goldfish. I did a partial water change but I see no change in his behavior. You have any idea what might be happening? Thanks, A: Whenever one of my oscars evinces such torpor, I give him/her a 50% water change. You also might find it useful to warm his tank a few degrees. Make sure his filter is working and give him a small crayfish to stalk and eat. LA
Eliud V, Puerto Rico, September 29, 2010
Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately my oscar has officially circled the drain as I found him dead at the bottom of his tank. It's a shame, but it's a part of the hobby. I'm gonna have to do a big water change and clean it well before I let any other fishes in there. All the best, A: Don't "clean" your tank too severly. You want to keep some of the nitrifying bacteria in your filtration system. I focus much of my efforts on reducing the CTD syndrome. LA

Regards, A: I made a couple corrections in red. I don't care if I'm not #1 in Nigeria. I'm already close enough. LA
A: If you don't think you bought trhe right spider, bring him in and we'll make a swap. Personally I would not "handle" any spider. I saw a Mexican red legg kick off a literal cloud of those nasty hairs while it was being handled by a pro. Work with Paul on your spider selection. He's only here Sundays. Or better yet, bring it in TarantulaWeen eve. Might as well have some fun. LA Jenny White, Sheldahl, IA, September 30, 2010 A: No prob on the spider toting from this end. One advantage to Sunday night -- no other businesses are open. We get all the parking lots. Just let one of our troops know you need a toter, and you got one. LA

Here's an addition for your duckweed page. Triops love it! i have some triops (cancriformis) and before they went into the tank, i decided to put some duckweed from my pond in there. they love to eat it, so i dont have to feed them as much.(but i still throw in a few shrimp pellets and dead flies) Its cool seing triops swimming at the top of the tank eating duckweed. some even grab it and drag it to the bottom. it also makes them grow faster. if anyone has triops and has a pond near their house, throw some duckweed in there.
A: Hmm. Sounds like duckweed might be a good food to keep triops from eating each other. Triops are neat, but mine always turned into cannibals. LA
