LA
Colfax, Iowa held this year's official Turtle Races at the Thirsty Turtle
Sports Bar on the main drag.
LA
The specially trained Aqualand Racing Turtles arrived two days prior to the
races.
LA
Colfax's City Council and Mayor closed the street for this special turtle racing
event.
LA
Before the races we looked over the Thirsty Turtle's specially constructed
paddock for the racers.
LA
10 American three-toes and two Rooskies comprised the team. Six
were signing autographs.
LA
Not a happy camper here. The other racing turtles were chilling out.
LA
Hours later the racers spread out and relaxed before the races began.
LA
Here's the official racing track. The yellow line is the finish.
LA
Some of the racing awards.
LA
Qualifying entries were carefully marked. The two Rooskie were scratched.
INS problems?
LA
Here's a 3-year-old sulcata dark horse entry.
LA
And a red-eared slider made the cut (temporarily).
LA
The sulcata was disqualified for crowding.
LA
The ten qualifiers were re-aligned and re-started.
LA
The crowd was controlled but concerned.
LA
What's holding thing's up?
LA
Excellent crowd once the event started officially.
LA
The official ring girl notified the crowd of each heat. There were four
after 10:30 pm
LA
Kim Billings master-minded and hosted this year's official Turtle Races.
LA
At 11:30 pm we headed east, leaving the last three heats for the midnight crew.
LA
Adios. We did not make the Saturday 4 pm events. We had to
photograph a Classic Car Show.

Historical Footnote: All Racing Turtles came from Aqualand
and were certified drug free. While at the Thirsty Turtle facilities
they were fed a mixture of organic greens. They received daily
relaxation periods in a specially designed natatorial enclosure. No
turtles, terrapins, or tortoises were harmed in the high speed competitions.
They were born to run. LA
